It is still off in my home, but gosh it's cold today.

Upstairs is ok (boiler up here) with the hot water pipes giving off a bit of warmth. Yet downstairs is miserable.

It was ok to say, 'ooh i am going to wear fleeces etc...' when it was 12 degress, but 5 is slightly different non?

I CAN@T AFFORD IT and i feel like poo, for not being able to put it on yet.

In this weather i reckon you're doing great to get to 5pm tbh. It really does nip in quick doesn't it?
I think if the children were fully dressed and were complaining it was cold I would relent and put the heating on. It's currently 15c in our house and it's just starting to feel not warm.
I think it helps we have a south facing house as well.

needmorecoffee · 28/10/2008 17:10

number 4 has gone all pale and her hands and feet were white and cold. She can't keep warm being paralysed n all so I figured it was sign for a fire. She's now thawing out in the front room while I'm out here freezing my norks off.

expatinscotland · 28/10/2008 17:12

'does anyone (except my wealthy in-laws) heat bedrooms at night?'

hell no.

DH has the cat as his personal hot water bottle.

sorkycake · 28/10/2008 17:13

cuddles all round needed then NMC , best thing about being cold in our house is everyone squishes together under the quilt to watch tv.

matildax · 28/10/2008 17:13

heating on timed for the last couple of days, im in newcastle, so not as far north as you scotish lot, and its 'brass monkey' weather here, so god knows how cold it must be in scotland???

we had our gas meter taken out,as it was very expensive, and some weeks we had no money to put gas on the card, and we would sit without gas for a couple of days. it was horrible when the little ones complained of the cold so we thought that we couldnt live through that again this year
and will now get a dreaded bill in 3 months time,(if its really high, we will have to go back on the meter.) so i am trying to be careful.

however it pisses me off that so many people are cold because they cant afford it, A warm house should be a right, not a bloody luxury!!

sorkycake · 28/10/2008 17:14

you know it's cold when the cat wants a cuddle

Expat when you avin' that baby?

needmorecoffee · 28/10/2008 17:14

ugh. I have teenage boys. They come with a protective layer of stinky socks!!!

expatinscotland · 28/10/2008 17:17

she's HIS cat, most definitely.

soon as he gets in and rolls onto his side, she curls up under his legs.

and she's a nice, fat cat.

then she purrs and purrs.

she sleeps cuddled up to him all night.

i'm still pregnant!

sorkycake · 28/10/2008 17:22

I'm up by you matildax, I thought we were supposed to be getting snow today.

Ah mine are all of cuddle age NMC

If I'm cold I always squidge up to Dh, the man is like a hot water bottle. How do they do it? Maybe it's males, Ds1 has always been a warm child too.

BloodRedTulips · 28/10/2008 17:22

mine is still broken

thought it was airlocked but turns out it's not.

it's sleeting and hailing here and we're exposed on all sides and spending a fortune on solid fuel that does nothing besides take the chill off one room and our breathe mists in front of our faces and my children are coughing and isck and i'm sitting here in my coat and scarf with and electric heater and a fire going and my nose is still cold when i breathe.

[sobs quietly into kitten snuggled on her lap]

WhereWolfTheWildThingsWere · 28/10/2008 17:40

We've had snow today, though not settled.

Its freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezing.

Dd is wearing socks then tights then trousers then socks again.

matildax · 28/10/2008 18:59

I put the heating on this afternoon. It was the snow that it! Bloody freezing

sorkycake · 28/10/2008 19:09

way aye!

PictureThis · 28/10/2008 19:13

that did it I meant

LoveMyGirls · 28/10/2008 19:19

matildax - this is exactly what I've just been discussing with dp, he says as I'm here all day and I'm childminding (youngest is 6mths) we need our heating on constant low, it's cheaper than trying to heat the house at certain times of the day so dp says, I'm not sure?

Our gas bill is £100 a quarter though so not too bad, it's the electric bill at £100 a month thats crippling us!

nappyaddict · 28/10/2008 19:20

What do you all have your thermostat set to?

expatinscotland · 28/10/2008 19:22

no thermostat here.

it's on a timer.

we just wait till the house thermometer drops.

it's very cold in Western Scotland at the moment.

sorkycake · 28/10/2008 19:22

15degrees.

Nappyaddict I would imagine your house is steamy hot! Or at least you wouldn't have needed the heating last night

expatinscotland · 28/10/2008 19:23

it needs to get in the single digits before we cave and turn it on.

nappyaddict · 28/10/2008 19:26

sorkycake - i had to open the windows last night!

nappyaddict · 28/10/2008 19:27

sorkycake - is 15 warm enough?

expatinscotland · 28/10/2008 19:28

15's tropical.

matildax · 28/10/2008 19:31

lol sorkey!!

lovemygirls, i am sure someone has told me that it is cheaper, just want to be certain, so i dont die of a heart attack when the bill comes in!!!

the heating went off an hour ago, and the house is now pretty cold again!!
im sitting here in my coat, and my dcs went to bed in their extra thick jim jams plus a grobag on the youngest. i normally dont wear pjs for bed but it was so so cold last night, that i had pjs, and bed socks, and a hot water bottle!!! i felt like my grandma!! lol
