Really boring question but what is the best kitchen bin you’ve had?

dazedandblue · 21/08/2026 21:45

I need a new kitchen bin, looking for recommendations.
The bin I am replacing is a Morphy Richards sensor bin.

Ideally not another sensor bin.

I realise how dull this question may be… apologies in advance!

I have a 30l Simple Human bin. It fits nicely against the wall. https://www.simplehuman.co.uk/products/rectangular-touch-bar-can-30l?variant=32718186283113&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=uk-shopping-brand-simplehuman&utm_content=198657769613&utm_term=&nbt=nb%3Aadwords%3Ag%3A24075435026%3A198657769613%3A818708225186&nb_adtype=pla&nb_kwd=&nb_ti=pla-365061527204&nb_mi=320912352&nb_pc=online&nb_pi=CW2015&nb_ppi=365061527204&nb_placement=&nb_li_ms=&nb_lp_ms=&nb_fii=&nb_ap=&nb_mt=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=24075435026&gclid=CjwKCAjwkaXUBhASEiwAZI3ds9x_7Ze5dbKd9mCgYbWvptQU3MNEMprwqRcpMkPHPE783XfuD9PaxRoC2jgQAvD_BwE

I have the cupboard boxes (posted up thread) for recycling and bottles.

Also have a food waste caddy, it smells even though i wash it after every empty.

There's just too many bins now!

Simple Human soft close slim pedal bin for us. Their products are so well designed - it holds masses despite being the slim version and looks great plus no more clanging lid! Worth buying their brand of liners as they fit perfectly with no visible overhang, are very tough and the bag lasts ages as the bin has great capacity.

TheChosenTwo · 22/08/2026 11:20

We have an Integrated bin cupboard/drawer system thing. It’s absolutely brilliant and means there isn’t a bin plonked somewhere in the kitchen. It looks like one of the other cupboards but pulls out like a drawer. One side has general rubbish, one side has recycling and the back is smaller so we use it for glass.

panomara · 22/08/2026 11:49

Having refurbed the kitchen a couple of years ago, I have to say being able to get rid of the free standing bin and use pull out double built in bins instead is a godsend.

I had a double Brabantia bin before that, with pedal mechanism, it was fine, but took up so much space! Not anymore now.

petitpasta · 22/08/2026 11:56

This bin is working well for us. Larger rubbish section, lift up lidded area for paper and a pull out smaller bin on casters for other recycling.

I bought this bin over 15 years ago, it was £90 when I purchased it. I had a narrow spot where it needed to go and it’s still as good now as it was then. I still love it. I’ve always used the branantia bin bags.

I absolutely love my bin!! It's fantastic old school but fab!

BaronessBomburst · 22/08/2026 13:38

Brabantia bins come with a lifetime guarantee, so if the clip breaks you can contact them for a replacement. That said, mine's been going 20 years and survived all the abuse toddler DS gave it. It's the crescent shape with two inserts, for general waste and food waste. Very easy to clean too.

Brabantia Touch Bin

principalskinna · 22/08/2026 15:46

I don't see why having a bin in a sealed cupboard is gross and I don't see how it's different from one that kicks about in the middle of your kitchen

mumumental · 22/08/2026 16:12

Brabantia touch bin.

Globules · 22/08/2026 16:20

I hated having an integrated bin. It was awful having to open a cupboard to get to the bin when you had mucky hands.

Following this thread with interest, as my bin needs replacing.

mumlect · 22/08/2026 16:21

I was given the Brabantia Touch Bin as a wedding gift in 2000. It lasted right through to 2024. We only replaced it because we wanted a bin that had different sections for recycling. It was still going strong. We liked Brabantia because they sell the parts, so sometime in the early 2020s (after 20 years of continuous use and 3 house moves) we did replace the lid. Other than that it was still going strong.

saveforthat · 21/08/2026 22:07

I would never have another sensor bin after 2 going wrong. I now have a simple human pedal bin. Perfect.

I have a friend whose sensor bin went wrong and kept opening when her DH spoke, as if to say "Here's another load of rubbish"!

I suspect it was more that his weight or movement triggered it when he entered the vicinity, but it was still quite funny.

SleeplessRoads · 22/08/2026 17:13

We have a Joseph Joseph totem, and we'd probably replace with the same bin if it broke.

But I do secretly miss by Brabantia Touch bin in platinum. I just thought it was a lovely looking bin, but the separate recycling compartment in the Joseph Joseph Totem makes it worth keeping that over the Brabantia Touch.

I will say though, the Joseph Joseph bin bags are an ongoing cost that we're willing to stomach. And I must comment the Brabantia customer service as they sent us out two replacement lids when the mechanism broke (possibly because of us being heavy handed...).

BunnyLake · 22/08/2026 17:14

I got so fed up with bins getting mucky now I just use a large pedal bin bag, hang it on the door handle then put it in the wheelie bin when it’s getting too full or manky.

I did not read this before I made my post and I think you might be my bin soulmate (as someone who loved my Brabantia Touch bin, had it for many years with replacement lids and now replaced it with a bin that has sections for recycling...).

It's so similar to my bin story that I'm actually wondering if DH has got Mumsnet and not told me...

Simply human!!!! Check it out

ThatLassFromLeeds · 22/08/2026 17:24

We have a Simple Human one which we like (as much as we’ve ever thought about a bin…). It can be locked, which is handy when our toddler nieces come round.

OliveHenry · 22/08/2026 18:35

I've got this one, though I've had it a while and paid about £90 for it, not £160!

https://ekohome.co.uk/products/ecofly-pedal-bin-45l

I needed one to fit under the worktop and still open, so the split lid is ideal.

I do love it, but the thing that has made the most difference has been switching to Bacofoil Elasti-Fit bin bags - they never split, and always fit over the bin without a fight. Sounds a bit mad but they are life-changing :-)

We also have the Joseph Joseph totem, I can’t believe how much it has gone up in price though! Think I paid £130 about 5 years ago.

namechangedasexpected · 22/08/2026 20:11

I have a Simple Human 30L butterfly bin that my mum bought me. I had a little think and was surprised to realise that was at least 25 years ago. Its still in great condition, no rust marks, pedal and lid still work perfectly. It has the odd tiny dent but nothing obvious. So if you want one that will last...

summater · 22/08/2026 20:14

We have a 30l Brabantia pedal bin, it was quite expensive for a pedal bin but still looks good and works well
