Has anyone got really nice wine glasses?

I've realised that we haven't got any sets of matching wine glasses any more because they have got broken over time - we used to have loads but I can't even find four matching ones now. So I'm looking to get some new ones and wondered if anyone has some that they would recommend? Open to all types!

My top tip is to use the sherry glasses, even for red wine, to cut down consumption! Works for me.

Also never put them in the dishwasher as it makes them cloudy.

I loathe stemless glasses for wine.

We have Villeroy and Boch for everyday. We put them in the dishwasher and they’re fine.

For dinner parties, we have Riedel and Waterford. Tend to hand wash the Waterford only.

@marmaladeandpeanutbutter 😂, that’s one reason I bought the ones @Donotgogentle linked to. The design is pretty and delicate and unlike all of the Riedel glasses I love. They’re also 250ml, so won’t hold much wine.

I put my Riedel in the dishwasher.

I’m 😵‍💫 at some of the prices of some of the glasses linked to. I don’t mind £15 or so each, but some of these are eye watering.

I always tell the kids that they’ve just made a bit of room in the cupboard when we have a casualty…., not sure I’d be that relaxed with some of these.

@TheTecknician they are lovely! I had a link at that brand but wonder how crystal can be so cheap. Do they feel nice and heavy?

Yes, especially the highball. Very solid and tough. There was a box of the tumblers in my local TKM this morning so should still be available. £15 for six.

I’ve got these in red . Really solid - have lasted ages no breakages . Practical because they can double up as dessert receptacles.

Dartington wine glass plus RCR glasses.

Bought them much more cheaply from another website when on sale ( sorry can’t remember which one - bought them ages ago- classy & sturdy - no need to replace in years !)

@CloseYourRingStress I have 4 these Sherry ones, bought on eBay.

These are the ones we have, but the clear version. We have 16 and I rotate them in the cupboard so they don’t get dishwasher bloom.

Oka glasses, you can get coloured ones. Love my green ones.

TimeForATerf · 19/01/2025 18:06

God I HATE thick glass. Tea tastes better in fine bone China, a latte in a fine glass mug, wine in fine, thin glass. I don’t need fancy, just thin glass. I’ve bought from TK Maxx, John Lewis, online crystal. I’m clumsy, I put them in the dishwasher because I hate glasses that aren’t gleaming. I’ve wasted lots of money.

I recently bought a load from IKEA that are great, really fine, ok for white or red, very pleasant indeed and bizarrely have escaped the dishwasher unscathed. Wish I’d bought more and stuck them in the cupboard.

One of the reasons I love eating out in France and Italy, is that even the most basic restaurants have good glassware with good wine.

@FatCatSkinnyRat your glasses are my preferred choice, perfect. 👌

Funderthighs · 19/01/2025 18:09

We have IKEA bog standard wine glasses and absolutely love them. I’m not a fan of stemless wine glasses as I always feel it’s like drinking wine out of a tumbler.

PlanetJungle · 19/01/2025 12:21

How are you defining an actual wine glass?

I suppose I mean traditional. Like many others here, I don’t like anything thick or clunky, and wouldn’t drink wine from a stemless glass (but really like those for water). I’d rather have a beautiful, thin glass design and hand wash it, but I’m not drinking wine every day!

Gekeos · 19/01/2025 21:43

Neptune wineglasses are really nice.

Sparsely · 19/01/2025 23:29

Morrisons.4 for £6. They are very elegantly shaped, nice thin stem.

IncessantNameChanger · 20/01/2025 00:33

I have ones like in the Traitors from Primark. They only seem to sell them in the summers

Oohhh.. I’ve been coveting the Traitors glasses!

OolongTeaDrinker · 20/01/2025 09:36

We have these ones which I recommend. They look great and have a nice weight to them.

Sounds like your dishwasher needs topping up with rinse aid!

PlanetJungle · 20/01/2025 10:11

Well in light of this thread - I decided to google the cloudy glass issue and it suggested you needed to soak your glasses in an acidic liquid - vinegar for example - so I did last night poured it out this morning and still looked cloudy - then I wiped the inside with an ecloth and it was sparkling again. I have so many old wine glasses to attend to now - I hate a cloudy glass for wine or water.
And to onto prevention, apart from hand washing...hard water is the culprit, you need to keep your dishwasher topped up with salt, the rinse aid will help to get rid of water marks and give it that extra shine but doesn't do much for the cloudiness. Wash your glasses in low temperatures and don't pre rinse your other dishes as the detergent has nothing to do and so the excess chemicals will react to produce a cloudy film on your glasses.

These are our outdoor plastic wine glasses - we use them as universal - I hated the shape of the red wine version.
So hard to find a good plastic glass.

DeepFatFried · 20/01/2025 10:57

I like stemless for red wine, take up less space in the dishwasher and cupboard, less easily knocked over.

Stemmed for White wine , to keep it colder.

M&S have lovely glasses at reasonable prices.
