Has anyone got really nice wine glasses?

I've realised that we haven't got any sets of matching wine glasses any more because they have got broken over time - we used to have loads but I can't even find four matching ones now. So I'm looking to get some new ones and wondered if anyone has some that they would recommend? Open to all types!

What kind of wine will you be drinking from them, OP? You need quite different glass shapes for red, white, or champagne.

Chef and Sommelier.

We have Zalto ones. Very fine crystal glass, expensive I guess, but an absolute delight to drink from. They’re more robust than they look. Best of all you must wash them in the dishwasher. They’re always broken when people try and hand wash them.

The Vintage list is gorgeous. I have the short wine glasses (can't remember their name but they have short stems)

I agree, I am ordering a set today. The glasses are beautiful.

My go to is a wine glass made from recycled grolsh bottle. I bought it decades ago and it's still going strong. It feels reassuringly chunky and short stem / low centre of gravity means the cats are less likely to send it flying! Of course when we have people over I have to get out the posh skinny 'proper wine glasses but they always feel far too delicate!!

these are cheap asda wine glasses but theyre really nice, big and look a lot more expensive than the price of 4 for £4. you can smash the odd one and easy to replace...

We have Dartington wine glasses that can be washed in the dishwasher. A couple of different sizes for red and white and also their tumblers for gin etc. They’re used very regularly and if they do break not so expensive as to get upset about it!

Mostly red wine, but looking for a glass for any wine if possible. Feels like having specific glasses for specific wine is both a level of organisation that may be beyond me and a quick route to not having enough matching ones again. I do like having different glasses in restaurants though.

Also means I like the idea of universal ones.

I would like some recommendations for whisky glasses. I used to have a heavy crystal one that broke.

Chuchoter · 18/01/2025 16:16

Alessi traditional shaped ones.

Frauhubert · 18/01/2025 16:27

I have got some stunning crystal wine & champagne glasses from antique shops and some equally stunning but more ‘on trend’ glasses from Anthropologie
love both and my wine evenings feel just so luxurious

Personally I'd go for a classic crystal, Edinburgh, Stuart, Waterford. Antique shops, you can hold them, see the way the light works.

Otherwise Etsy, eBay.

PlanetJungle · 18/01/2025 16:56

These are my favourite - I like the rim to be quite fine.

We have the Dartington Glitz glasses for a range of drinks including white and red wine (the older heavier ones in the original packaging). We also have some cheaper, rip off ones made by Diamante at our house in Spain. We love them and they are always commented on.

They don't go anywhere near the dishwasher though, none of my glasses do, I hate dishwasher bloom! 😄

I have two lovely sets (one a pair, the other four but I've broken one) of gorgeous crystal from a charity shop. You would be surprised how much nice glassware you can find from house clearances etc. My set of 4 would have cost me £80 new, I got them for £16. It's worth taking your time and doing a bit of trawling.

Hwi · 18/01/2025 18:01

Try antique shops - some of them are cheaper than charity shops. Try Ebay - loads of wedding gifts like that for sale very cheaply, and the quality is amazing.

WhineAndWine1 · 18/01/2025 18:19

Great thread idea. I really want ones that are so thin if you look at them the wrong way snap. They would never survive the dishwasher lol

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 18/01/2025 18:39

Cut Crystal for wine , I still have most of my wedding ones from Forty years ago. But I supplement them with other peoples’ wedding crystal from charity shops or eBay, ( they often come in fives because one has been broken). The quality is much better than modern glass, the crystal is thicker and more radiant.

Julieju1 · 18/01/2025 18:41

Buy vintage. Lots in charity shops, Ebay etc

ByGraceAlone · 18/01/2025 19:09

I love heavy cut crystal. I want it to feel heavy in the hand but be fine cut. I want to sit and marvel at the beauty of the glass will I drink the wine. I like nice glassware, can you tell?

We have recently treated ourselves to a set of these after our wedding crystal finally dwindled to only 2 after 30 years.

But I'd also agree with if you like crystal look in charity shops. I recently bought a set of gorgeous crystal champagne flutes for £15.

WINE GLASS #3

The wine glass #3 is part of a dinner service made up of 11 pieces in clear crystal, with the characteristic cut starting at the top of the leg and blossoming like a flower on the curve of the gob. An astonishing approach, rooted in a unique aesthetic...

TK Maxx (or Homesense) is my go-to for glassware generally. I bought some heavy crystal whisky tumblers and highballs there last October. I forget the brand but it's Italian-sounding and the boxes are black. Boxes of six with about six different styles.

Spot the wine nerds... @Another2Cats and @JingleAaaallTheWay Wine

Not going to disagree with you here at all.

However, I do have a dirty little secret.

I have an illicit joy about drinking from a very specific, regional, French wine glass. This is something that stays hidden from everyone except my DH (and now, of course, the whole of Mumsnet).

Just after I did my O Levels our family went on holiday abroad for the very first time ever (before that we typically went to Butlins or Pontins).

We stayed in a gîte (my mum insisted on pronouncing the word as "git") somewhere to the north of Strasbourg. For those that are unaware, this was a sort of French Airbnb decades before that website was invented.

Everywhere we went there were these wine glasses with green stems. They were quite small, holding only 14cl (about 1/5th of a bottle), whereas a Zalto Universal is about 53cl. My parents bought a set of six that they have now passed on to me.

I love them, they just remind me so much of that first ever holiday in France when I was 16 and where I got my first taste of wine.

Has anyone got really nice wine glasses?
