Has anyone got really nice wine glasses?

I've realised that we haven't got any sets of matching wine glasses any more because they have got broken over time - we used to have loads but I can't even find four matching ones now. So I'm looking to get some new ones and wondered if anyone has some that they would recommend? Open to all types!

I love their products,,value for money when on sale.

When we moved into our pub, it had such a bad rep ladies didn't drink there. As a result we had no gin, wine or champagne flutes, no brandy glasses, nothing other than branded pint glasses.

Charity shops are your friend. We've bought some very good quality, heavy glasses and saves so much money doing so. We often get comments on how nice our glasses are and because the volunteers in the shops know know us, when they get big sets in they give us a call.

Modern glasses are either cheap and thin, or very expensive, second hand shops are full of beautiful vintage sets.

My husband bought us a pair of Waterford crystal glasses, they are gorgeous to use, just the right size and very elegant

and I’ve just seen they’re on offer - I might buy another pair!

DH uses a supermarket wine glass, there are some nice ones and so easily replaceable. These are also for non-wine nerd visitors.
I use Gabriel Glass standart as my everyday glass. These are great, thin but reasonably robust, I use these for wine friends.
For special wines I use my Zalto glasses. They're so fragile, expensive and tricky to replace that I have one each of a few shapes, only I handle them. DH will swerve well away from any surface they are on, he doesn't trust them not to leap off and shatter.

Agree with this. I’d get a mid range set for entertaining and better glasses for when it’s just you

i would get a mid priced set if maybe 8 flutes (I have Darlington crystal which are v sturdy), 8 white Sauvignon glasses, 8 red (something like Chef & Sommelier etc… get a style that is classic in case you need to replace for breakages)

After buying (& breaking) many different Riedel glasses I splurged on some Zalto universals and Gabriel Glass hand blown (2 of each): they ARE all you need and if you hand wash them last well. I wish I hadn’t bothered with Reidel (I work for a wine company who recommend them BUT I think they have a weak point at the stem) . the ultra thin glssses have ‘bounce’ so don’t break as easily, plus I find that people are more careful as they look fragile. I’ve been using mine a couple of times a week for almost 10 years now so worth the high initial cost

There are other similar mouth blown universal glasses out there, if I was starting from scratch I’d just get 4 of those & champagne flutes

Most importantly: don’t drink and dry

I have cleared a spot near the sink where we put used wine glasses - I wash & dry next day, this has reduced breakages a lot

justasking111 · 17/01/2025 23:01

The good glasses I hand wash carefully. Have a soft brush especially for the job. The every day glasses I pick up in supermarkets and leave the dishwasher to break.

PenCreed · 17/01/2025 23:11

Ours are LSA International - check TK Maxx for them as well as John Lewis! We also have a couple of sets from Asda for when we have parties...

MissAtomicBomb1 · 17/01/2025 23:28

IKEA!
£2.50 each I think. We bought 6 red, white & champagne glasses.
Really easy to replace if they break. They look and feel much more expensive than they actually are too.

PointsSouth · 18/01/2025 01:07

As the life expectancy of a wine glass in our house is about six weeks, I like anything that a) holds wine and b) I won’t get emotionally attached to.

Same goes for lovers.

MadeofCoffee · 18/01/2025 06:18

I really like the ones they have in the first dates restaurant! Kind of ribbed glass. Not seen any anywhere though.

JaninaDuszejko · 18/01/2025 07:46

I suppose it depends how into your wine you are as well. A wine glass should have a stem (so you don't warm up the wine with your hands) and should be narrower at the top than in the bowl (so you can swirl without spilling and concentrate the nose). Thinner glass is nicer to drink out of so crystal, which is stronger than normal glass, is best. And the glass should be clear, not coloured. The shape of the glass affects how the wine tastes which is why Reidel makes different shapes, we've got two different shaped Reidel glasses and they do makea difference when drinking the same wine out of each, it's quite interesting.

But if you aren't that into your wine then I'd just got for something like these. No point wasting money on expensive crystal glasses if you're not in it for the experience. Or like @WillimNot says go to a charity shop or buy a used set on ebay.

We have some habitat ones from Sainsbury's for hiball and tumblers then bought our wine glasses in carrefour on hols in France. They are just plain and simple, large with thin glass which look great. We have three different sizes plus brandy balloons and flutes.

id love Riedel but I'm very heavy handed with glasses and break too many to have expensive ones any more

StiffyByngsDogBartholomewsChristmasBone · 18/01/2025 08:50

Here are some of them

AndThereSheGoes · 18/01/2025 09:05

This is a great thread. I need some nice ones - stemmed ,heavy but thin rimmed.

Not a fan of the stemless ones but I do like the small everyday water glasses from Tesco for wine - reminds me of drinking in France.
However I do need some decent glasses for company. Love the Waterford ones someone postered but £85 for 2 ...gulp.

CloseYourRingStress · 18/01/2025 09:08

Stemless here too, Reidel and cheaper Maxwell and Williams.

I love the crystal @Donotgogentle linked to, very tempted.

look at David Mellor there is a shop in London and in the Lake District and they sell on line. our latest glasses come from there

Peak District not Lake District; just across from Hathersage station

gingercat02 · 18/01/2025 09:20

We have stemless Dartington ones we use a lot, but we still have Waterford crystal ones (white, red, flutes and water glasses) we got as wedding presents 23 years ago, we use them regularly (although I did replace some of the red ones from Ebay as they got chipped).

nettie434 · 18/01/2025 09:24

Great photo @StiffyByngsDogBartholomewsChristmasBone. There was a thread a few months ago in which someone asked how many glasses posters had and I was horrified but pleased that I'd accumulated so many. Mine are in storage at the moment and your photo reminded me how lovely an array of shiny glasses is.

I'm another David Mellor fan, especially Linear

https://www.davidmellordesign.com/david-mellor-linear-medium-wine-glass-25cl but not everyone will like the wider rim. It does mean they are quite heavy and sturdy though.

I also love @WillimNot's suggestion of charity shops, especially if you don't mind not being able to get matching sets.

David Mellor Linear medium wine glass 25cl

The Linear range of wine glasses were specially designed for David Mellor. Their beautiful purist shapes with an added decorative element reflect Corin Mellor's admiration both of robust English 18th century glassware and mid-20th century Scandinavian...

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 18/01/2025 09:25

I've given up on expensive glasses. They always seem to be non dishwasher proof and get wrecked that way or all get broken.

We just buy the habitat ones from Sainsbury's and have a box set aside in reserve.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 18/01/2025 09:25

Mine are villeroy & boch. Red, white and flutes.
