Has anyone got really nice wine glasses?

I've realised that we haven't got any sets of matching wine glasses any more because they have got broken over time - we used to have loads but I can't even find four matching ones now. So I'm looking to get some new ones and wondered if anyone has some that they would recommend? Open to all types!

Stemless here too, Reidel and cheaper Maxwell and Williams.

I love the crystal @Donotgogentle linked to, very tempted.

It’s really nice and vintage looking, have managed not to break any of my 12 glasses . . . yet!

I bought mine at Fortnum & Mason if you want to see it in the flesh and are SE based.

Flamingmentalcats · 18/01/2025 09:37

Spinningbird, those are gorgeous 😍, I love how they drop into a point into the stem. I have Dartington wine glasses but I may have to treat myself for my birthday. I will elegantly drink my diet cola from them 😂

CloseYourRingStress · 18/01/2025 09:39

Thanks @Donotgogentle , I think I'll buy four. I'm oop North, there is a stockist near Leeds, but I'll just order them direct (there's a 10% off code for new customers).

My local have got these from Ikea - I really like them

We have some lovely ones from Chef & Sommelier - they can go in dishwasher and are very robust

Scentsitive · 18/01/2025 09:56

Ours are from Georg Jensen. The Sky collection.

Charity shops have good glassware; why not buy there instead of fueling demand for newly produced goods. Think of poor Planet Earth.

lummox · 18/01/2025 10:05

Oh wow - so many replies. Thank you to everyone and I am just going to look through them all. Glad to see that the 'have cheapo ones and just replace them when they break versus have nice ones and try to keep them intact' debate isn't just us!

This is a great thread. We have many half sets but are looking to replace with nice glasses that match (new kitchen) the Nisbets tip for Riedel is fab as I didn't know that I also like the Ikea ones

I’m not a fan of stemless wine glasses as holding the bulb warms the wine (more of an issue at parties than at dinner).

I am gutted that Ikea have discontinued the wine glass version of their ubiquitous Pokal tumbler. Fantastic for parties and barbecues as they are almost indestructible and I love the kitsch look.

Stemless but I like the Spanish Bodega stacking wine glasses, if you want cheap and cheerful.

If you like vintage, I have a soft spot for the mid century Luminarc green stemmed glasses.

If you want a classic wine glass (and don’t have butterfingered teens loading the dishwasher), 100% Riedel but not the stemless ones. They have grape specific glasses that are supposed to improve the flavour.

I have all of the above but the Riedel ones are only for civilised people who can be trusted not to break them!

These ones? I recently bought some where I live. Have had them for many years, still love them!

Have had deeply fun half hour looking at all these! Am now down to choosing between the Riedel Extreme Pinot Noir that @sometimesmovingforwards suggested (and others seconded/thirded) and the Iittala Essence ones that @PeppyTealDuck linked to. Think I slightly prefer the Iittala, but the Riedel ones may be more replaceable? Sooo many other lovely ones though - and I am now eyeing up the tumblers and other glasses as well!

Iittala Essence are very nice to drink from. We use them all the time, and through the years these are are favourites do doubt! Just be a bit careful when you put them in the dishwasher.

In my opinion they are more comfortable in the hand than the Riedel ones.

JimHalpertsWife · 18/01/2025 11:19

We have these from Asda, £8 for two. Very robust (dh is a rough dish washer)

@spinningbirds we have those Waterford ones too! They’re beautiful glasses

CaptainNoBeardButAParrot · 18/01/2025 12:22

Luigi Bormioli is a fabulous brand - they have different ranges so you can have a look through their site. They supply trade as well - nice restaurants - so their glasses are quite robust as well as attractive. Riedel are beautiful but very much 'look at it too aggressively' and it will break!

The mixology range is good too

Riedel stemless. Wedding presents we use weekly. Love them

Was going to suggest these

sunshinechaser · 18/01/2025 12:31

I need to replace my broken crystal wine glasses as some have smashed over the years but I really couldn't justify the price of them (even on eBay etc) so I bought lots of glass ones from the White Company. They are lovely-fine but still feel robust.
I especially like the tulip ones for champagne/fizz.
I really don't like stemless wine glasses. I love the elegance of a long stemmed wine glass and feel holding a stemless glass would heat my wine up!

Imisschampagne · 18/01/2025 12:40

I like really delicate ones. But since Zalto is too expensive I went for Spiegelau

was recommended to me at a wine bar as being the slightly cheaper version of Zalto and you can put them in the dishwasher.

I have stemmed Dartington wine glasses I bought from TK Maxx about ten years ago. Nothing fancy or expensive but still quite elegant. I also have a few Royal Doulton crystal champagne flutes.

ThisPageIsBlank · 18/01/2025 13:21

Yes these. They're handmade and really beautiful. I have matching water glasses, also.

DH uses a supermarket wine glass, there are some nice ones and so easily replaceable. These are also for non-wine nerd visitors.
I use Gabriel Glass standart as my everyday glass. These are great, thin but reasonably robust, I use these for wine friends.
For special wines I use my Zalto glasses. They're so fragile, expensive and tricky to replace that I have one each of a few shapes, only I handle them. DH will swerve well away from any surface they are on, he doesn't trust them not to leap off and shatter.

You could me, wheresmyshoe (or I could be you).

This did make me smile. For "best" we also have some Zalto glasses; I like them a lot. We've gone for a set of six Universals as a compromise rather than the individual shapes.

My DH seems a little more relaxed around them but you are very right to warn people that the stems can be fragile, especially when you are washing them.

"I use Gabriel Glass standart as my everyday glass."

Yes, we've got a set of their Universal glasses as well for everyday use. They are really nice and about half the price of Zaltos.

We have the Luigi Bormioli ISO 215ml tasting glasses for every day use. £33 for 6 delivered and dishwasher safe. I even like them, although I prefer Riedel and more expensive stemware.

The Vintage list is gorgeous. I have the short wine glasses (can't remember their name but they have short stems)
