Is anyone just starting to declutter? Or hasn't yet.

I know there's lots of decluttering threads but I'm just starting (again) but this time I mean business.
What's inspired you to declutter now? Mine is clearing out an elderly relative's home and realising I don't want dcs to ever have that much stuff to clear. Plus it's quite depressing having too much stuff.
Dh and I travel a lot, mainly uk, and you realise you need very little to get on in life.

I'm not going minimalist although can see the appeal.

Care to join? I won't be counting items but I will list as much as possible. I should really try and sell some stuff but cba.

@BadSkiingMum I'd definitely say they don't owe you anything 🤣
Pet rescue centres appreciate old towels.

The iron and towels made it out for electrical and textile collection respectively. Hooray!

I have heard that about animal rescue centres but I am not really in touch with any. Plus I imagine that the animal rescue dealing with ill animals would then send any soiled towels to landfill, whereas if I send them to textile recycling then the fibre might be reused? Not sure what’s better or worse!

We've been having a big declutter ready for building work to start. Said building work has now started and our decluttering has ground to a halt. Managed to get rid of quite a bit though (748 items so far) and we'll keep going once the house is easier to live in.

Hoolahoophop · 12/06/2025 09:36

@CubanTody how on earth have you managed to keep count?! That's next level decluttering and organization. I'm impressed.

I am hoping to continue to remove unwanted items as I empty packing boxes. As I don't want anything cluttering my lovely new house that I do not love or use.

CubanTody · 12/06/2025 09:44

@Hoolahoophop I just keep a tally whenever something leaves the house, nothing complicated. We want to get rid of 2025 items this year and we're currently running behind...

Hoolahoophop · 12/06/2025 09:45

@CubanTody I love that idea, what a great challenge. I hope you manage it.

CherryogDog · 12/06/2025 10:00

I've not done as much as I was hoping to.
I've had a sort through of books, 2 bags ready to go to the Oxfam book shop.
Then I found a huge box of books in the shed.
I've been dithering about keeping my reference books from my HCP days but I can't decide at the moment.
I have cleared the piles of stuff from my dining table and the kitchen worktops.
It's definitely "fed not dead" at the moment.

LushLemonTart · 12/06/2025 11:00

@CubanTody that's amazing. I hope you reach your goal.

We were taking some things to the charity shop yesterday and bumped into a neighbour. She admired a picture we were taking. Offered her it and she took it gladly. It wasn't an awful picture just didn't go in the room it had been in.

Some minor progress, one item sold on EBay but I somehow missed the email and it was woefully overdue for posting! Apologised profusely to that buyer and paid for higher cost postage to try and make up.

I then decided to spend 20 minutes (before I needed to start cooking) sorting through a couple of small piles of paper. The piles must have been very compressed because it was quite productive and still filled half the recycling bin, plus some for shredding.

Hoping to get more items listed on Ebay if possible.

LushLemonTart · 16/06/2025 13:48

Well done

I'm away again but back Wednesday. I'm going to tackle clothes again. I might even try selling some? I came across some hiking gear that I no longer fit in to or will wear. Fairly expensive new. Also have other clothes that may be worth selling?

OP posts:
BadSkiingMum · 16/06/2025 17:45

I think it’s always worth trying, plus you know that the item is going to someone who wants it, so better from an environmental point of view?

BadSkiingMum · 17/06/2025 07:53

Right, I went a bit gung-ho and rapidly listed eight items that I had sitting there in drafts. Normally I do a close review of each item before posting, but I know that the listings are fundamentally ok and decided to just get them up there. I always check each item when it has been purchased too and contact the seller if there’s any problems.

Will try to do the rest today.

LushLemonTart · 23/06/2025 15:19

That's good @BadSkiingMum . I hope you sell lots.
I've got rid of some electrical (recycled).

I need to tackle the clothes though.

How's everyone doing?
I've fallen off the wagon, struggling with the heat and too many migraines.
Currently having a little break from sorting my bags of clean laundry out, not saying I've put it off for too long but one bag was full of jumpers 😳!

CubanTody · 28/06/2025 17:55

I've made no progress since our renovations started, no time and no head space!

LushLemonTart · 29/06/2025 10:30

I got rid of a bag of clothes. Was ruthless with jumpers. I don't need all if them even if I do like them all. Kept my favourites. Ds1 buys me jumpers for Christmas and I feel bad giving them away. But I gave one away.

It has felt a bit piecemeal but I have got rid of a few items:

An old iron went to electrical recycling

DH took the ironing board to the tip, so I seized the chance to add in a small mattress.

Some DC clothes went to a collection that school was organising.

A sheet and the ironing board cover went to textile recycling, joined by yet more old towels.

I did finally manage to get some items off to the school uniform shop!

Next jobs:

Weed out a few things from my own wardrobe
Reduce the prices on my EBay items
Give away a couple of garden items on FB

CherryogDog · 19/07/2025 20:34

How's everyone doing?
I'm struggling with lack of motivation and too much procrastination, but today I've ruthlessly decluttered my socks and tidied my smalls.
Also decluttered my bathroom.
Small steps...

LushLemonTart · 19/07/2025 23:55

Well done @CherryogDog

I was just thinking today I need to get back to it. Been away a lot lately so no time.

Me too but have a week off work now so will hopefully get some done.

CherryogDog · 20/07/2025 09:14

I've booked an Anglo doorstep collection for next week, and I have family staying at the end of the month, so 2 deadlines 🫣
My intention is to spend the next week decluttering, and the following week cleaning. Now I just need to find my willpower, must be here somewhere 😁

Rowgtfc72 · 20/07/2025 09:32

Hello
Managed to put a bag of clothes and cushions out for the charity van and have a box of odds and sods good to go.
Dd now has a new double ottoman bed, has chucked stuff out but put most of it back under!
My spare room floor however has been clear for 10 days. Usually once it's clear other people dump stuff.
I have a foam mattress in the roof which needs to go as it was off dds toddler bed and we'd kept for sleepovers but she's 18 now so those days have gone.
Microwaved my scrambled egg this morning and had to acknowledge the chipped plastic pot I was using was originally bought when dd was 6 months old and weaning. The plastic cupboard of doom is well overdue a declutter. I must have 50 or so mugs in there as well.
On the t shirt front, how many would you say is too many? At a guess I would say I have about 60 and regularly wear 5!

LushLemonTart · 20/07/2025 09:32

Never heard of an Anglo collection?

@Justhere65 good luck. Post your progress.

Anglo collections are great. You can book online and they are very reliable.

CherryogDog · 20/07/2025 15:36

I haven't used Anglo before, but getting everything out at once will be such a step forward for me.
