Is anyone just starting to declutter? Or hasn't yet.

I know there's lots of decluttering threads but I'm just starting (again) but this time I mean business.
What's inspired you to declutter now? Mine is clearing out an elderly relative's home and realising I don't want dcs to ever have that much stuff to clear. Plus it's quite depressing having too much stuff.
Dh and I travel a lot, mainly uk, and you realise you need very little to get on in life.

I'm not going minimalist although can see the appeal.

Care to join? I won't be counting items but I will list as much as possible. I should really try and sell some stuff but cba.

I blast music and dance my way through tidying. Put all my clothes away the other day to alternative 80s. I have less clothes now so it's easier.

Well, it took three very hard working removal people 2 very full days to move our house, and (as we were not moving far) I think 8 journeys in their lorry. We definitely have too much stuff for our 4 bed house. So as I begin to unpack I need to be even more ruthless with the decluttering or the new house will be as untidy as the old one and I dream of having a clutter free house that I am proud to invite people over to. I also want to be able to clean easily which we all know is quicker without clutter. I want an open house with anyone and everyone welcome to visit. So here I go again with stage two decluttering.

LushLemonTart · 20/05/2025 20:32

Good luck @Hoolahoophop . Sounds like a mammoth task.

Today I started on the mammoth task of putting my clean laundry away, 8 bags for life full.
Had another little cull, 2 bags to go to charity.
Hopefully I'll finish it tomorrow.
Finally finished the painting.

Today I threw away about 30 Covid tests that were 2 years out of date (the kids school gave us a huge box), shredded loads of water/energy bills and organised an expanding file with household bills. I’ve kept old council tax bills for some reason -quite interesting to see that in 2012 the annual cost was £1.8k, compared to £3k now…bit worrying to think just how high it could be when I’m retired (which is years away, but still!)

LushLemonTart · 24/05/2025 22:16

Well done you two.

Had bad news yesterday so last night to cheer myself up I decluttered a big bag of maltesers I found in the spare bedroom. Ds2 is in the forces and away a while so they'd have gone off by the time he's back 😉

Passthecake30 · 25/05/2025 09:14

Hope you’re ok @LushLemonTart

Why are Maltesars in the spare bedroom?

Going to tackle my work clothes soon. I go to the office once every couple of months since Covid, I do not need 12 pairs of office trousers..and also, everything is so dated.

CherryogDog · 25/05/2025 09:44

@LushLemonTart I hope you're OK 🌺

The maltesers reminded me of the galaxy advert with the woman finding the bar of chocolate she'd forgotten about.
No chocolate is ever forgotten in this house!

Today is t-shirts and smalls sorting.
A few weeks ago I tidied my sock drawer using those little pockets, but for me it's not a sustainable way of putting them away. I'm going to buy some extending drawer dividers instead.
My DP has the right idea, just buys the same type and colour socks, summer and winter weight, and folds them neatly in his drawer.
I have sock categories, winter/summer, but also socks that are never worn to the stables. No matter how much I shake them out before and after washing they've always got hayseeds and bits of hair stuck on them, which is embarrassing if I take my shoes off in other people's houses.
I had a good charity shop haul of nice t-shirts so I can get rid of my tatty ones.

LushLemonTart · 26/05/2025 00:23

Thanks. I found out a good friend has died. It was a shock.

The spare bedroom is where ds2 ds1 and dgcs sleep when here. Ds1 is here now as we're away together tomorrow. Ds2 had left a bag full of sweet stuff. I found M&Ms tonight when I got in from work 🙈

CherryogDog · 26/05/2025 07:22

M&Ms! Yum!
I'm sorry to hear about your friend @LushLemonTart.

Sadly only one t-shirt went in the charity bag. I have far too many, but at least my drawers are tidy.
I had 3 pairs of jeans from the charity shop, not quite big enough (why aren't sizes the same in one brand), all went in the bag.
Sometimes I fantasise about getting rid of every single item of clothing and starting all over again but I'd probably end up the same.

LushLemonTart · 26/05/2025 07:52

@CherryogDog I know what you mean about clothes. I wish I could just have a capsule wardrobe for each season.

OP posts:
CherryogDog · 26/05/2025 08:03

Oh I love watching those "build your capsule wardrobe" videos, but I don't think I have a compatible lifestyle lol.
And they all seem to be American with huge walk in wardrobes which I think must be really easy to keep organised, I've not seen any UK "wardrobe and a chest of drawers" organisers.

Passthecake30 · 26/05/2025 14:31

@LushLemonTart so sorry to hear that, take care.

Today’s declutter - some old paperwork relating to the kids schools, and about 6 items of clothing destined for a charity bag, when one gets posted through the door - hopefully won’t have to wait too long. I think if I find something to get rid of every day, and don’t replace it, I’ll be winning. As some has to go in the bin, at least that way I won’t overfill it!
I’d like to start on the kids rooms, they have lots of old board games that are way too young.

LushLemonTart · 26/05/2025 20:38

@CherryogDog oh yes those walk in wardrobes 😂 I don't have one of those.

Been away today so back to doing so.e tomorrow.

Well done @Passthecake30 .

My new cabinets/book shelves are up, and I'm really chuffed with them!
I've started my book sort out, filled a couple of bags to go to charity.
Stopped for a rest now.

LushLemonTart · 09/06/2025 14:52

How's everyone doing?

Had a lot going on but back to it soon.

Diplidocus4 · 09/06/2025 16:41

I emptied the wardrobe / cupboard on Friday ! Scared myself with the amount of packaging from parcels I’ve kept ! And there are bags ready to Vinted / Charity / keep ….. small but much needed progress !

Passthecake30 · 09/06/2025 23:04

@Diplidocus4 I use unwanted packaging in the bathroom bin, comes in handy

A charity bag came through the door so I got rid of a few items of clothing. Small steps.

Just did the same job at my Mum's house

Wouldn't wish it on anyone

Theunamedcat · 09/06/2025 23:50

I've decluttered part of my dad's house I need to do more if mind though

BadSkiingMum · 10/06/2025 13:16

Right this week I want to declutter a non-working steam generator iron and some old white towels. Their destination is the recycling collection tomorrow night.

I am trying to move away from having white towels as I think they just attract stains and look grubby so quickly!

LushLemonTart · 10/06/2025 13:33

Well done all.

@BadSkiingMum we have mainly grey towels now. The odd white one.

OP posts:
BadSkiingMum · 10/06/2025 13:52

To be fair, a few of these towels were from our wedding list. Our 20th wedding anniversary has been and gone so I think they have had a fair innings! 😂
