Does anyone iron anymore?

I don't iron everything but I do iron DC uniform, anything baggy that has a crease, like shirts or baggy trousers etc...I have stopped ironing bedsheets as what's the point? Is this bad? I have heard people on morning shows discuss this in recent months, some saying they haven't ironed anything in years. What do you all do?

Always ironed, have lovely Italian steamer iron. Sheets, pillow cases, not towels but if anything looks better pressed, it gets ironed:) I have lovely silk nightwear which gets a gentle iron.

I don't like the crumpled look at all. Dc iron, dh irons, we all like to look respectable :)

Choosetolivelife · 19/09/2024 22:30

I shudder when I remember from my childhood my stressed dm with a huge mountain of clothes waiting to be ironed, next to the washer. It was always there, she would do some, then more would be added. Dm ironed everything, even bedding and underwear, pyjamas everything. For this reason I don't iron anything apart from dc's uniforms, or something extra creased. I put the clothes straight away after washing, and drying. Something is only ironed if it looks creased when coming to wear it, rarely does tbh, as it isn't festering in a pile for ages getting crumpled, and is swiftly hung up. No piles of clothes in sight!! Life is too short, unless you love it.

YellowComb · 19/09/2024 22:36

I used to hate ironing but bought a refurbished steam generator iron in a sale about 10 years ago. I think it cost £220. I can't believe how easy & quick it is to iron now.

I only do DHs shirts, duvet covers/pillowcases and my tops. If it broke tonight, I'd buy another one tomorrow.

dudsville · 19/09/2024 22:37

DH irons his work shirts. I iron loads of my clothes as they woven cotton and look better ironed. I also iron the pockets so that they lie flat, and on things with zippers I iron the bits of that so that it lays flat. And then, the most shocking thing that I iron are my pyjamas and night dresses. Ironing these things is like a little gift to myself, a small delight. I don't mind doing it. In summer it takes about an hr a week, in winter about an hr every other week.

I don't iron bedding, but I line dry that and then fold it neatly, it's always perfect.

I don't think choosing to spend this time ironing makes me more or less lazy. It just means that I'm spending my time doing something I value.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 19/09/2024 22:42

I don't iron because i cba and since I'm on my own with 2 dc its probably all I'd end up doing if i started it... but i do think clothes look better when ironed. I tend to just hang things up, use crease release and hope for the best....

Goatblu · 19/09/2024 22:43

Yes if it's cotton or linen (which a lot of my clothes are). I don't iron the cotton bedding though.

Steamywindowsss · 19/09/2024 22:52

I iron. I do all our clothes apart from underwear and gym kit (me, husband, toddler and baby). I’m way too busy to indulge in this with soon-to-be-three little ones and a full-time job, but the alternative is unthinkable! I wouldn’t trust anyone else to do it either after I saw my MIL’s cleaner ironing shirts on the right side... Shocker.

When my mum comes over she often clears the decks for me (including underwear and sheets, she’s an Olympic gold medal ironer) and it’s absolute heaven. Like having a visit from a fairy.

All my friends think I’m mad, so ironing is mainly my guilty secret! 😂

Thank God for the ‘devices’ and tumble dryers then.

Calling women (and yes, let’s face it, you are talking exclusively about women) ‘lazy’ and having ‘no pride’ for opting out of 24/7 domestic drudgery is pure misogyny.

Not talking about just women at all, my Dad meticulously ironed his uniforms. The definition of lazy is basically to be unwilling to exert energy on an activity and this is what I'm relating to. I have no desire to spend hours ironing, I'm not willing to waste my time doing it for clothes that don't need ironing? My point was that we have become 'lazy' in this respect, myself included. A far cry from misogyny as I have never related ironing to be solely a female task, far from it, my DH foes it more than me. Xx

rainbowsparkle28 · 19/09/2024 23:04

I hate ironing with a passion. I will iron on an item by item basis if it needs it (shirt/nice dress/smart trousers or whatever) but otherwise no I don't iron in the main. Ain't no one got time for that 😅...

fridaynight1 · 19/09/2024 23:07

I haven't ironed anything for years but just this week I have bought an ironing board and an iron. It's probably something to do with me turning 60 last month. I think there is a certain age for wearing gym pants and trackies and I think we've both gone past it.
Sad I know but - I think I missed doing the ironing on a Sunday night. Seriously thinking of taking up knitting again ..

Growlybear83 · 20/09/2024 00:28

I iron everything apart from underwear. I don't think I possess any clothing that is wearable if it's not ironed, and I love the feel of freshly ironed cotton sheets and pillow cases when I change the bed.

isthismylifenow · 20/09/2024 05:19

When someone posts a rightmove thread here, I always notice the creased bedding.

There is a time and place for having to get the iron out. When taking photos to sell a house, and also when posting clothing for sale on second hand sites. It just makes things look neater, which in my mind makes me feel things have been cared for just that little bit more.

RobinEllacotStrike · 20/09/2024 07:39

I've not ironed in decades apart from very very occasionally.

I sew so I do have an iron & ironing board to press seams etc as I go.

KitsyWitsy · 20/09/2024 08:56

I iron some of my clothes if they need it. I wear mostly cotton so some do, otherwise the bottom of dresses can look untidy etc. I don’t tumble any of my clothes, they all hang to dry and most of my day to day clothes are cotton jersey so they are usually fine.

I also iron pillowcases. I can get away with not ironing the duvet cover etc, but my pillowcases look awful if not ironed. Again, I only have 100% cotton so it does wrinkle.

Neinneinnein · 20/09/2024 09:00

Nope.
Waste of time and energy (mine and electricity).

mushypaperstraws · 20/09/2024 09:01

Yes I do, I have a lot of cotton clothes though

CoffeandTiaMaria · 20/09/2024 09:03

Desert76 · 19/09/2024 17:24

I iron most things - including bedsheets, tablecloths, tea towels etc. And clothes, obviously.

I prefer the way they look, the way they feel - crisp ironed bedsheets are lovely - and the way they fit neatly in the drawer.

And I find ironing really quite relaxing, there’s something very satisfying about turning a crumpled jumble of clothes into a neat, geometric pile. I tend to listen to podcasts while I am doing it, so it isn’t really a chore.

Me too.
I wear mainly natural fibres and I actually enjoy ironing, it’s not drudgery to me.
Each to their own 😊

Netcam · 20/09/2024 09:10

We have an iron but it's probably been used about 5 times in the nearly 13 years I lived here. The last time I used it was for our wedding 2 years ago. I am rubbish at ironing and trying to not iron creases into a silk dress was definitely a challenge for me that I'm happy not to repeat.

TheNuthatch · 20/09/2024 09:32

Yes, I iron most of our clothes. I don't iron bedding, underwear or Pj's etc, just what we leave the house in. If I'm honest, I really notice people wearing un ironed clothes. I would feel scruffy wearing clothes without ironing them.
I have a steam generator iron and it's really quick and easy. I can iron most things on one side and you don't need to keep changing the temperature setting or filling it up with water. I wouldn't go back to a normal iron.

HavenSprings · 20/09/2024 14:34

I don't iron anything. Ironing is something dictated by our society, it's got nothing to do with cleanliness and we can very well live without. I don't think society will shut me out because I have a crease on my skirt, and it someone will, then it means that I'm better off without whatever company/person/group has decided to judge me based on a crease.

These days I'm very happy to see directors/managers/people in high corporate positions going to work with creased shirts. I'm pretty sure they/their partners have better things to do than ironing.😊

Itonlytakesadiagram · 20/09/2024 14:40

I do but only because I like things looking neat. If I can avoid it I will. So shirts and things that have come out the wash looking a bit shit get ironed. It's never fun let's face it. My mum and gran ironed bedsheets and socks. Christ can you imagine?

BarbedButterfly · 20/09/2024 14:41

I don't even own an iron. No kids and I don't buy anything that needs it. DH's shirts just get hung up in a steamy room for a few mins and all good. Life is too short.

LaerealSilverhand · 20/09/2024 14:56

As others have said, for weddings and funerals only. Never bothered with school uniform shirts.

I do like nice ironed clothes, but not enough to be arsed to iron on a regular basis.

Me too although I also iron DH and DS underpants if they have been line dried.

Yes, how else would I get time to watch box sets!
