Does anyone iron anymore?

I don't iron everything but I do iron DC uniform, anything baggy that has a crease, like shirts or baggy trousers etc...I have stopped ironing bedsheets as what's the point? Is this bad? I have heard people on morning shows discuss this in recent months, some saying they haven't ironed anything in years. What do you all do?

I do. Some of my clothes require ironing, and DD's work uniform looks better after an iron. Yes, she is perfectly capable of ironing, but she does most of the cooking, and I quite enjoy ironing while watching TV.

ClaudineMallory · 19/09/2024 17:20

I enjoy ironing! I like getting things neat and straight! I don't iron bedsheets, though.

socks1107 · 19/09/2024 17:21

Yes I iron most things apart from bedding and underwear. I enjoy it and I think it makes my clothes hang nicer - especially trousers

StoneHenge85 · 19/09/2024 17:24

Ironing? What’s that?

Desert76 · 19/09/2024 17:24

I iron most things - including bedsheets, tablecloths, tea towels etc. And clothes, obviously.

I prefer the way they look, the way they feel - crisp ironed bedsheets are lovely - and the way they fit neatly in the drawer.

And I find ironing really quite relaxing, there’s something very satisfying about turning a crumpled jumble of clothes into a neat, geometric pile. I tend to listen to podcasts while I am doing it, so it isn’t really a chore.

I iron shirts, dresses, t shirts usually. I also iron duvet covers and pillow cases because I love the feel of getting into bed when they are fresh on and ironed. Clean and creased don't have the same appeal.

muddyford · 19/09/2024 17:25

I iron my bed linen as very little compares with the bliss of slipping into crisp, smooth sheets.

ClaudineMallory · 19/09/2024 17:25

@Desert76 - my thoughts exactly, it's just such a satisfying activity.

TheActualAudacity · 19/09/2024 17:26

Shirts
Blouses
T-Shirts
Trousers
Dresses
Pillowcases

All the above get ironed. I do a pile about every 3 weeks in front of the telly.

Couldn’t wear creased or crumpled clothes and love the look of ironed pillowcases and especially want the ‘envelope’ to be flat.

matleave1233 · 19/09/2024 17:26

Hand steamer all the way. Don't even have an ironing board

HighlandCowbag · 19/09/2024 17:29

Nah rarely iron. Odd pair of jeans, or a couple of tops but other than that absolutely not. Ds uniform always looks fine if I fold it straight from the line/dryer. Tbf dh is a builder and I spend most of my time in jodhpurs and sports t shirts cos we have ponies.

I go to uni twice a week so might iron for that but otherwise no.

Yes, we iron everything (underwear excluded).
Apart from making the clothes look better, bedding and towels sit better on the shelves when ironed to within an inch of there life!

We share the ironing equally and tend to have a good session while watching something on TV. The other day I got through two episodes of Midsomer Murders and this week my OH watched three episodes of Death In Paradise.
Ironing basket is filling up again so will check through the DVD's for a good film or series.😁

You aren’t supposed to iron towels, it squashes the pile.

AgileGreenSeal · 19/09/2024 17:31

I don’t iron everything but I do like to iron tea-towels. I always iron straight from the washing machine (it’s much easier) and then hang them on a clothes horse to dry, with a dehumidifier on.

Button28384738 · 19/09/2024 17:32

Hardly ever, only iron something I want to wear that's creased.
DDs wear polos and sweatshirts for school so don't need ironing

Joystir59 · 19/09/2024 17:34

Don't own either an iron or an ironing board

SkyeBlue28 · 19/09/2024 17:34

I iron most of our clothes. I prefer how things look and feel. Some things like leggings don’t need it. I don’t iron bed sheets or pyjamas except I do iron my own pyjamas because I love the feeling.

HelenHywater · 19/09/2024 17:35

I iron things as I wear them. This is a recent change from my previous practice of not ironing anything. I think it makes clothes look better.

I don't iron anything else though or stand for hours "doing the ironing" while listening to the radio as my mother used to do. I do like ironed bedding though, so maybe that's my next step....

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/09/2024 17:36

I iron certain clothes- dresses, shirts, trousers. Not jeans. DD irons her school uniform as she’s now in secondary. We didn’t iron anything for ages and realised our iron is crap. Any recommendations for a decent one?!

JaneFondue · 19/09/2024 17:36

Yes, I do, because I wear mostly cotton.

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 19/09/2024 17:37

As little as physically possible

TwoBlueFish · 19/09/2024 17:37

I didn’t iron for years. However since stopping using the tumble dryer and either line drying outside or on an airer inside everything is more wrinkly, so I now iron T-shirts/Shirts

Seatalteaxl · 19/09/2024 17:37

I iron the school uniform for my dc but nothing else. DH doesn’t wear shirts thank goodness. Never ironed a bed sheet, wouldn’t even consider it.

TeenToTwenties · 19/09/2024 17:39

I iron shirts and trousers and pillowcases.

Happyher · 19/09/2024 17:40

I’m 65 and have always ironed. Not everything - I hang clothe on hangers to dry if I know they won’t need ironing. I iron duvet covers and pillow cases as I prefer them iron. I do use the time when I’m ironing as contemplation thinking time as I’m usually alone. I always iron upstairs as it’s easier to put things away

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 19/09/2024 17:40

DP and DD both do their own stuff. I specifically buy clothes that don't need ironing, so end up doing a shirt a few times a years and that's it.
