Does anyone iron anymore?

I don't iron everything but I do iron DC uniform, anything baggy that has a crease, like shirts or baggy trousers etc...I have stopped ironing bedsheets as what's the point? Is this bad? I have heard people on morning shows discuss this in recent months, some saying they haven't ironed anything in years. What do you all do?

We iron everything - but we live in a place with putzi flies. It's therapeutic, I find. When the pile goes from a creased heap to lovely neat piles it's very satisfying. I'd choose it over several other household chores...

I iron clothes that really look better for it but here's how I halved my ironing in one fell swoop.
I only iron the front of stuff. Not even joking.

That’s my trick too, I figure that the backs get creased and crumpled when sitting in the car or under jackets etc and the heat from the iron when doing the front does reach the back anyway.

Pleiades2020 · 19/09/2024 19:04

I don't even own an iron since moving house a few years ago.

Kwip · 19/09/2024 19:06

I iron nothing but perler beads!

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 19/09/2024 19:07

I iron everything.

It's really obvious when people don't lie on their clothes. It looks shabby.

DrCoconut · 19/09/2024 19:08

The creases usually steam out in the dryer. I iron DS's scout uniform for parades and occasionally work stuff but that's it. I don't really have time to do everything.

Oneblindmouse · 19/09/2024 19:09

Yes I iron. I live alone so can please myself what I do. I iron all my clothes except underwear, socks and pyjamas. Bedding and tablecloths but not towels.
I watch TV whilst doing it.

Greycheck · 19/09/2024 19:14

I don't iron. I haven't ever owned an iron I don't think. Nothing that crease release and/or the tumble drier can't sort if ever needed.

Twofifty · 19/09/2024 19:15

When I stopped ironing everything my electricity bill dropped by £50 a month. Now I only iron school shirts.

bugaboo218 · 19/09/2024 19:15

I hate ironing with a passion!

I like the feel of ironed clothes, so I outsource of anything that needs ironing.

It saves me so much time and stress!

Yes, we iron everything (underwear excluded).
Apart from making the clothes look better, bedding and towels sit better on the shelves when ironed to within an inch of there life!

We share the ironing equally and tend to have a good session while watching something on TV. The other day I got through two episodes of Midsomer Murders and this week my OH watched three episodes of Death In Paradise.
Ironing basket is filling up again so will check through the DVD's for a good film or series.😁

You are me, right down to the murder mysteries (usually Columbo or Murder She Wrote). I feel happy when I've done it but hate doing it!

My Mum and my Nannas did the same, piles of ironing, even pants and Bedsheets! We've become lazy, less pride, also the materials are softer and less creasing etc. Xx

Maybe…rather than being lazy, women are out doing more important, paid work.

Me too. Had an experience some years back when my dog was subjected to being a mango fly breeding ground. Poor thing. Was most likely from his bedding.

So his bedding gets washed a lot more regularly.

Everything is of mine is ironed. Including sheets. But I do love it when I get into a clean ironed bed though.

Not for about 20 years. CBA and nothing ever needs it.

Not at all, my elders also worked in paid employment and hard! Weekends were spent baking, washing, mangle, hang out, ironing, shopping, cooking etc. Yes, we have become lazier at home, chores are much easier now with devices and Sprays, tumble dryers, also style has changed. Tumbling several pairs of grey joggers, t shirts, lycra sets, job done for many. Materials are often crease free now, bloody brilliant! I know I'm much lazier then my female forebearers when it comes to ironing, because I can be, fact.

foreverlikely · 19/09/2024 21:36

Wow, am absolutely loving this! Thanks so much, I have had a great time reading all your replies, and many leaving me in stitches 🤣. The range here is insane. From never touched or owned an iron to ironing for 3 hours whilst watching a film! Like to think I'm somewhere in the middle. There are also people who iron underwear!!

I dislike ironing from when my ex and 3 children all needed 5 shirts a week. I now iron only my own clothes as necessary as DH tumble dries all his stuff. My clothes don’t go anywhere near the dryer and I think most clothing looks better ironed or steamed. I recently swapped all my bedding for linen which is tumbled and folded and is meant to look slightly rumpled whereas unironed cotton bedding looks crap.

BrieHugger · 19/09/2024 22:06

Stopped during Covid, wasn’t seeing anyone so it seemed unnecessary. Prior to that I stopped ironing school uniform once they went into blazers and ties. You can’t see the shirt, and by the time they’ve carried a backpack for a while everything is more crumpled anyway. Nowadays I only iron clothes for special occasions.

Beaverbridge · 19/09/2024 22:11

I love ironing, it's my favourite chore. Box set on TV and away I go. I go to my daughter's twice a week and do hers. My sil wouldn't have an ironed work shirt otherwise.

ApolloandDaphne · 19/09/2024 22:11

I do because I wear a lot of linen and my DH still wears shirts to work (I do his because I am retired and he still works).

ForGreyKoala · 19/09/2024 22:13

Yes. I actually like ironing, but I don't iron sheets, that's just a waste of time. I wear natural fabrics and they need ironing.

Iiiiiiiiii · 19/09/2024 22:14

We havent ironed anything at home since covid first started. Only thing that has been ironed is DHs shirts whilst travelling for work (infrequently)

Thank God for the ‘devices’ and tumble dryers then.

Calling women (and yes, let’s face it, you are talking exclusively about women) ‘lazy’ and having ‘no pride’ for opting out of 24/7 domestic drudgery is pure misogyny.

jaimelesoleil · 19/09/2024 22:21

Not much. I send all bedding and shirts out for ironing and we just iron the odd piece as and when.

doodleschnoodle · 19/09/2024 22:24

Yes, DD's hama beads and I wundaweb on her Rainbows badges Grin
