hello, i'm here looking for recommendations on how i can make my laundry smell so good for days onwards, kind of like when someone walks past you and you can smell their fresh laundry , As of now i'm using the fairy pods along with the matching comforter and scented boosters, and dont get me wrong it smells amazingg , and i love it the only problem i find is the dry down. When my clothes dry down its either the smell is non existent or just faint and i want that scent to linger, any tips on what brands i should use or what i should do to make it smell strong for days on wards ?

Wilton fabric softener is gorgeous. Definitely worth a try. Usually sold in sainsburys I think.

I second wilton fabric softener. Its divine. Its in sainsbury or waitrose. You can buy in amazon too. Its smell expensive. Not like other fabric softeners and its last awhile.

I don’t want my clothes to smell of washing stuff. I want it to wash away. Not used fabric conditioner for about 15 years.

And don't forget to only change your sheets twice a year and have a shower every second Sunday!
Competitive minging is very Mumsnet.

And a 'sink wash' in between which I've only heard of on Mumsnet in recent times. Which sounds like so much effort you may as well just have a quick shower!!!

I don't like anything too strong but I love the Fairy outdoorable, which is a soft but lasting scent

FlamingoQueen · 15/03/2024 23:03

I know exactly what you mean! I’ve switched to fairy which has improved the smell. I think it’s always harder in winter months and I find that cooking smells are absorbed by the clothing (we don’t have a kitchen door and smells drift upstairs no matter how hard I try). I love the smell of clean clothes.

UpsideLeft · 15/03/2024 23:04

Well I did a wash earlier and decided to use a free sachet of Dettol antibacterial laundry sanitizer which you add into the final rinse where fabric softener goes

The clothes smell very strong and very clean

I like it

UpsideLeft · 15/03/2024 23:09

I do think the Lenor softeners smell the best and strongest

I like the yellow one best

I've always wandered why my MILs laundry smells SO strong even after months! She uses a standard brand but she puts a wash with max ten items of clothing... so the ratio of detergent per item is quite a lot!
So I've given up trying since I prefer to just do a few washes a week :)

MN is grim at times. Half of MN don’t want to use strong scented laundry detergent but some are happy to sleep in manky bed sheets….

A lot of posters would be disgusted with my reed diffusers, wax melts, plug in air fresheners and my Zoflora disinfectant collection 😂

Getting back to the OP, I use laundry beads in winter as well as fabric conditioner and tumble drier sheets, I love nice smelling laundry.

tara66 · 15/03/2024 23:21

You may need to wear wet clothes all the time.😉

Geppili · 15/03/2024 23:25

@Strugglebus which sheets do you get?

CaravaggiosCat · 15/03/2024 23:29

Hmm love walking past the laundrette and that fabric conditioner smell wafting around outside 😊

ADoggyDogWorld · 15/03/2024 23:41

Someone was reccing a Spanish brand a while back.

effoffwind · 15/03/2024 20:55

What's wrong with you all ? 😂😂

I love the smell of fresh laundry

I love an Aldi coconut liquid wash and can smell it on my uniforms every day

I love the smell of fresh laundry too - but mine smells of the fresh air and sunshine it's dried in. That's what "fresh laundry smell" means to me.

Starhaf · 15/03/2024 23:47

Try Tallow & Ash products.

almostthere75 · 15/03/2024 23:57

White Vinegar works as stain remover & conditioner
Otherwise I'd get static without any conditioning type stuff

Jellybeanz456 · 16/03/2024 00:05

They use far to much soap powder/pods comfort whatever it is they use that's why it smells so strong.

IloveAslan · 16/03/2024 00:28

ASighMadeOfStone · 15/03/2024 22:02

Agreed.

@zayzayundercover I like the smell of Ariel best, powder or pods tbh, and the nicest smelling fabric conditioner for me is still blue Lenor. Lots of posters recommended the M&S detergents though.

And if you walk past people and have to wrinkle your nose at the stench, it's the people who don't want clean smelling clothes I expect.

Adding chemicals to make the clothes smell is NOT a fresh laundry scent, it is a chemical scent. What is wrong with you all??? Freshly washed laundry just smells clean, not perfumed.

How do you get your clothes clean without chemicals? H2O for example?

I'd struggle tbh.

43ontherocksporfavor · 16/03/2024 08:03

Fabric conditioner makes the washing machine grow mould in the drawer.

Sorry, my wording was off. Of course you use chemicals to get the clothes clean, but there shouldn't be a lingering smell of them once the clothes have been rinsed. I use both laundry powder and fabric conditioner, but there is no smell of them once I have the clothes in the basket to hang on the line. I actively avoid anything which is highly scented, they don't have a natural smell at all.

HardHeartedHarbingerofHaggis · 16/03/2024 09:06

Best way is to dry out on the line, it won't last for ages though, that's a clean and fresh smell. If I can smell someone's laundry detergent strongly I assume that they're covering up poor washing habits/smelly clothes with it perhaps been left damp or not washing properly etc. Same with air fresheners if I walk in and can smell strong air fresheners it's will be because they're covering up another smell, that's been my experience anyway.

There’s a difference between laundry liquid/powder that leaves clothes clean vs leaving them with a lingering smell afterwards.

I don’t want a lingering chemical smell on my clothes, it makes me feel queasy.

Fabric conditioner makes the washing machine grow mould in the drawer.

So does any warm, moist, dark place regularly exposed to dirt/grime/bacteria. You can remove and wash the drawer you know? You don't have to leave it to fester.

if OP wants her laundry to smell nice after laundering them then why shouldn’t she? Nothing “wrong” with us all.

If you don’t want any scent from your laundry then that’s fine too.

Do you also object to people wearing perfume?
