Most exciting thread of the year. Ready.... Tell me about your washing up drainer thing!

I have metal washing-up drainage rack. It was quite expensive from Laura Ashley 😬
But its gone all rusty and looks like absolute shit (see images)

I'm not that keen on the Wham type of ones like this.
I'd rather get something a bit more stylish (if a washing-up drainer can be stylish).
But I don't really like these kind of two-tiered monstrosities. And they tend to be grey and black coloured which I hate.
And the sleek Joseph and Joseph ones have that horrible drip tray which turns my stomach.

I just can't bloody find what I'm looking for - a nice-looking one, not plastic, not black/grey, no drip tray with a cutlery part that cutlery can actually stand up in.

Please show me your washing-up drainers and give me some inspiration!

I can't help, but I'm placemarking. Who doesn't need more elegance in their dish drainer setup?

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 15/02/2024 20:35

I gave up on them for all the reasons mentioned. I’ve been using a (can’t remember proper name) square of absorbent material made to replace the traditional draining rack. I have 2 for when 1 is in the wash.

I am on the edge of my seat

HolidayAtNight · 15/02/2024 21:33

I jumped onto the thread to post about that exact Joseph Joseph one, so will bow out quietly Grin

UncomfortableSofa · 15/02/2024 21:39

I had the Joseph Joseph one and it was awful. It looked okay but if you didn't clean the bottom drip tray out every day or two then it would get all scummy, smelly and slimy. Was it excess dish soap doing it? I don't know. Gross though.

I currently have a plastic drip tray with a metal rack, but it is starting to rust a little.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 15/02/2024 22:09

I have a dishwasher so we don't have one. I. The past had a Woolworths one

KStockHERO · 16/02/2024 06:36

😭Very unhelpful replies so far.

😂😂😂

@UncomfortableSofa That's what worries me about the J&J one, accumulated scummy water. I've had lots of J&J stuff in the past and found it all a bit underwhelming! Sorry @HolidayAtNight 🫠

I was hoping someone would come and magically and immediately solve my washing-woes!

I have a pink one and love it. But not the look you're after. I stand it in the sink in hot water and white vinegar. It keeps it clean.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 16/02/2024 07:56

I just have a bog standard chrome wire one (no cutlery holder tho).

How about this:

Following with great interest, especially as none of my plates fit in my dish draining rack. They just tip out. Drives me mad.

StopStartStop · 16/02/2024 08:01

No, that needs throwing.
Go for the cheap plastic ones, in nice colours, and change them regularly.

I use a mat, instead. Easy to wash.

ArchetypalBusyMum · 16/02/2024 08:12

My draining board is near the wall, so I just lean the plates against the wall with the bottom on the draining board (the ridges stop them falling over). The water runs down the plate onto the draining board. Mugs etc just stand there.
No paraphernalia to wash/get manky or reduce the available space, just one draining board to easily and quickly wipe down.

TeaAndStrumpets · 16/02/2024 08:24

The trouble is that you can't seem to get a decent draining board these days. I have been searching for a non-commercial double drainer stainless sink for ages. Franke did the exact thing but no more. I always build a little leaning tower of crockery on my current single draining board, but most goes into the dishwasher. I hate the racks, they all get disgusting. I agree with PP though, just buy a cheap one as there is a basic design flaw in all of them, ie slime build up.

Have you looked at Simple Human as an alternative to Joseph Joseph?

I don't use a dishrack, but I do have other Simple Human items and the quality is great.

I've got a Simple Human freestanding corner shower rack and it's excellent. Had it five years and never rusted.

Ruralrules · 16/02/2024 08:45

I've the J&J one and the drip feature works well because I've a wooden worktop. I put it into the top of my dishwasher every fortnight or so and that keeps it quite clean. The design isn't the best for tall plates but I've yet to see a better design.

flutterby1 · 16/02/2024 08:47

Mine is double decker, it has 2 racks one on top of the other. I also use silicone drying mats for extra drying storage on the side

Next have different styles in several colour ways. I can’t abide them so just dump my dishes on the drainer in a pool of water. But then I’m a slob so maybe shouldn’t comment 😂

This is plastic coated wire, really hard wearing and does not rust. I gave up on the wooden/bamboo ones, Joseph Joseph ones but found this range the less unattractive but practical option

https://www.hartsofstur.com/delfinware-wireware-white-large-dish-drainer-2100.html?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiArLyuBhA7EiwA-qo80Gb6CeJqhzc-vFGKQB9RSC02HZ-u1UcheTWdyeo_fxWtHqnA9SmSQRoCvB8QAvD_BwE

We've had several of that one, and it's pretty good. Unfortunately IME they do rust eventually though (hence why we've had several), but they last a pretty long time.
