Windows are opened once rush hour is over to limit pollution getting into house. Cushions and throws aired outside in sunshine. Lots of houseplants. Curtains washed a few times a year.

userxx · 07/05/2023 22:13

My house is clean but I like wax melts to make it smell better, I can use every product under the sun but it won't smell like a wax melt.

HeidiUpTheMountain · 07/05/2023 22:24

Fresh air from open windows at some point every day, keeping bathrooms and bins clean, using the extractor or having a window open when cooking, and washing up regularly to help keep food smells down. Though I am revelling in the lovely curry smell in here this evening. It’ll go quickly once the windows are opened tomorrow morning.

chopc · 07/05/2023 22:52

I light an incense stick during cooking, open windows whenever possible, and lighting a candle in my cloakroom and entrance when I am expecting guests makes it smell wonderful

All kitchen side and fronts of doors cleaned with flash spray wipe done
All windowsills wiped down with spray bleach
Hoover 3-4 times a day windows open all day
Kitchen and bathroom floor cleaned with hot water and bleach
Also nice smelly oil on cotton pad and stick it in hoover that's what I do ever day

You hoover 3 - 4 times a day??!!

darisdet · 07/05/2023 23:11

Doesn't everyone 🤣

I'm joking of course.

I like a scented candle. If you want more eco:
Fresh flowers, windows open. My mother used to boil whole cloves in an oil burner. Lavender pomanders in wardrobes, use some citronella oil in a diffuser.

FiveShelties · 07/05/2023 23:12

@kirsty2023 - you only vacuum 3 or 4 times a day. Shocking.

Yes some times maybe more and yes I like a good candle as well and wax melts as well are good

darisdet · 07/05/2023 23:21

I don't doubt it! Friend of mine, very house proud, has their cordless Dyson out a couple of times a day at least. Unless that's just when I'm round dropping crumbs.

kirsty2023 · 07/05/2023 23:22

I can't stand bits on the carpet lol Grin

LakeFlyPie · 07/05/2023 23:25

Windows

Kyse · 07/05/2023 23:31

Open windows
Wash throws regularly
Bathroom has febreze small spaces air fresheners
Reed diffusers (hallway, bedroom)
I also burn a lot of candles and wax melts
Wash coats and scarves regularly and anything that cooking smells can cling on too

Get a lot of comments on how nice my home smells. It's not overpowering as my dad would whinge complain heavily when he visits!

I think the combination of scents but also windows open every day probably is what does it

RocketIceLollie · 07/05/2023 23:40

Fresh air is the best. But in winter I use wax melts. But yeah regularly changing the bins, cleaning the loo, washing bedding, etc, help.

Iminthemoneylife · 07/05/2023 21:35

Just a clean house and fresh air. Air freshener smell vile to me.

Agree with this. Any type of air freshener, plug in etc. just makes me feel sick and gives me a headache. Horrible things full of chemicals.

chopc · 07/05/2023 23:48

Also people living in it needs to be clean and smelling nice as well. Sometimes my teen's rooms can smell vile

2bazookas · 07/05/2023 23:49

No airfresheners or chemicals of any kind. I open the windows for a while every single day.

misssunshine4040 · 07/05/2023 23:51

Is no one scared of break ins or spiders creeping in at night with windows left open while you sleep?

I’m relieved to hear it. 😂. But this is Mumsnet and judging by the number of germophobes you see on here you could well be serious.

I feel the fear but do it anyway 😂

I have to close mine at night as ground floor but they can be locked open on the catch, and they have air vents too so they're always open

scoobydoo1971 · 08/05/2023 00:04

Fresh air, dehumidifiers on in rooms like kitchen areas, and white vinegar.

pastypirate · 08/05/2023 00:13

Could never sleep with the window shut. The breath smell in the morning is revolting.

I use a wax melt now end then but beeswax ones from a craft shop I like that are really mild.

Don't have a cat. Don't get me wrong I love cats but the cat litter smell is very invasive and grim.

Open the windows in your teens bedroom whether they like it or not!

I will fling shake and vac around sometimes . The smell is a bit much but it does reset the house smell a bit. Bicarbonate of soda is very good sir carpet smells and very very cheap,

I clean everything with minimal washing up liquid as in the brand. Also love ecover - my house just smells of that

Luredbyapomegranate · 08/05/2023 00:38

LividHouse · 07/05/2023 21:34

All gross to me.

I open windows and keep things clean.

We don't use air freshners due to allergies except I do spray a bit of Lysol in the bathroom after I finsh cleaning it.
Keeping a clean house and air purifiers running in bedrooms and livingroom and familyroom. I burn unscented candles or beeswax candles every night.
