I can't think of anything worse that trying to mask an unpleasant odour with an artificial scent, to me it just makes it worse. I much prefer to open a window, even when the weather's cold I'll leave a small window open in each room for a short while each day to give the house a good airing. A few months ago I moved to a house that was part of a row, my new neighbour warned me that damp and mould was a bit of an issue in these properties, however, I haven't experienced it at all and I believe it's due to letting air circulate.

Eurgh, yes, my MIL’s house smells of dog and air freshener, quite the cocktail. The dog smell would be much more manageable without the masking scent on top.

I do, they’re only small so easy to pop them in the sink and wash them out.

Also the white company has amazing smelling oils/candles - I like pomegranate in the winter, lime, basil and mandarin in the summer. You only need a few drops. I always have some in my burner and people associate the smell with my house!

I'm another "open windows" devotee. I also open all internal doors so the air can really move throughout the house. It's good for you and good for the building to breathe, too. It prevents condensation and mould, which add to bad odours.

We have two cats but are diligent about cleaning litter and washing bedding regularly. I pop white vinegar down all plugholes weekly. Bins are emptied and cleaned regularly. We keep on top of the laundry and don't use any heavily scented fabric softeners. I find that as I've reduced artificial scents over the years, my sense of smell is now much better, so now I can tell more easily if the house smells fresh or not. I change bedding weekly, and get duvets cleaned twice a year. When we make beds we always pull the duvet back to let the bed air out for a while before fully making it later, IFYSWIM. Apparently it allows the mattress to fully dry out. I dust semi regularly as dust can really hang on to odours. We have carpets cleaned in spring, and the oven cleaned annually. No shoes in the house! So no one can tread anything nasty in. Vacuuming and sweeping are done regularly and floors are mopped weekly. I occasionally light a scented candle in the downstairs WC if we're having a party, as it doesn't have a window.

If you have a cupboard or smaller space that smells, a bowl of either coffee beans, bicarb or vinegar will absorb the odour. Works great in the fridge, too!
