Plug ins?

Air freshners that sit on the sideboard?

People who leave the windows open all day/night long - do you do this when it’s minus 2 degrees outside?

Spot the poster without Scottish parents.

Only slightly joking.

Big, very warm duvets.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/05/2023 00:58

Minus 10 is about my limit. Bearing in mind DH always cracks first, around minus 5. Wimp. And we do have massive wool duvets, quilts and piles of blankets.

I love cold air/warm bed.

QueenBitch666 · 08/05/2023 00:59

Air fresheners / plug ins are toxic and trigger asthma, allergies, headaches, nausea.
I've been sat in a room not knowing they were in use and feel vile within minutes. How they've not been banned is beyond me.
Fresh air and essential oils here

Yep. I only pull the window to if it's blowing a gale outside and the noise is keeping me awake. Otherwise it's open at least an inch (and usually more) all year round.

QueenBitch666 · 08/05/2023 01:01

And it goes without saying a clean house

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 08/05/2023 01:01

"People who leave the windows open all day/night long - do you do this when it’s minus 2 degrees outside?"
Yes. Just a hairline crack for circulation when we sleep. Except in the summer. Shut tightly during heat waves and when pollen is high.

AliceMcK · 08/05/2023 01:02

Lots of fresh air, I make sure windows and doors are open as much as possible. Make sure pet hair cleaned each day and furniture pets sit on cleaned. I also have oil diffusers sticks in each room. If you have a damp house dehumidifiers, if not electric then the scented disposable ones in key damp spots.

CalamityClam · 08/05/2023 01:02

I have no idea how to use Zoflora but I love it! Tell me some tips please.

DramaAlpaca · 08/05/2023 01:05

I open windows.

I cannot bear any artificial scents, plug-ins, scented candles etc. Plus they make DH sniff, and that's more annoying than any bad smells Wink

So I open doors and windows, whatever the weather or temperature, all year round.

darisdet · 08/05/2023 01:11

"People who leave the windows open all day/night long - do you do this when it’s minus 2 degrees outside?"

Only in the main bathroom in which the small window is always open. I get puffy eyes if it's freezing in the bedroom overnight.

pizzaHeart · 08/05/2023 01:12

LividHouse · 07/05/2023 21:34

All gross to me.

I open windows and keep things clean.

agree

@imisscashmere

yes I do, bedroom windows are always open to kne degree or another, same with kitchen windows & bathroom skylight which fresh air in & through my house. My doors are both open at least 30 minutes a day, other than the depths of winter a lot longer than that.

@kermitspants

fresh air, as above.

i can't use chemicals/artificial smells or even good quality oils, so I don't use any kind of 'air freshener' scented candles etc.
a bit of bleach form the loo. Dishwashing liquid, for dishes & kitchen cleaning and a separate bottle in the bathroom.

as often as possible dry the laundry outside.

change beds frequently & keep on top of laundry & cleaning sift furnishings.

misssunshine4040 · 07/05/2023 23:51

Is no one scared of break ins or spiders creeping in at night with windows left open while you sleep?

@misssunshine4040 no, bedroom windows are second floor & nothing for them to climb. If they were to get in, the sight of me sleeping naked will scare them off.

I like spiders, I have no issue with them popping in!, I worry more about accidentally squashing one.

IWantRebeccasConfidence · 08/05/2023 01:22

None of those, they all smell totally chemical and shit. Open the windows, all of them, for 10mins a day even in winter. Blast the house and then close/have the heating on if needed.
get rid of carpets and have hard floors.
No to plug ins.

elm26 · 08/05/2023 01:41

Windows open is the most important one. We have our bedroom window open all year round, if it's absolutely freezing as in minus temperatures, I pull it in a little bit.

Hoover 2-3 times a week (have a dog but I'm lucky he doesn't shed much!)

No piles of dirty laundry that smells for example damp football socks and damp flannels go straight in machine

Toilets are cleaned daily

Bin in kitchen is cleaned once every fortnight with disinfectant and hot water and left to dry upside down outside, I don't let the bin overflow either and will wipe the inside if anything leaks etc

I like essential oils so will rub a tiny amount on the radiators and some hard surfaces (patch test before!)

Clean bedding for us once a week and clean blanket for dog in his bed once a week

I can't leave dirty pans or anything in the kitchen overnight, makes me retch the next day 😂

CalamityClam · 08/05/2023 01:02

I have no idea how to use Zoflora but I love it! Tell me some tips please.

I use it to soak my dishcloth etc in overnight, put sponge and dishcloth or whatever you use in the sink with the plug in, put half a capful in and a kettle of boiling water and leave to soak overnight.

I sometimes put a little down the bathroom sink with hot water running

You can dilute it and rub it on radiatiors etc but patch test first

If you have pets, I wouldn't use it on the floor. You can let them walk on it when its dry but I just prefer to use pet friendly disinfectant so I don't have to worry about his paws 😊

I'm absolutely petrified of spiders but I would rather have a spider in the room once in a blue moon than have the windows shut. The thought of my room smelling of morning breath and sweaty sleep in the summer yuck 🤮 (I do shower every day and brush my teeth morning and night by the way 😂).

Just feel I can't breathe/claustrophobic if windows are shut too!

I wouldn't leave downstairs windows open after I've gone to bed 😊

FindingMeno · 08/05/2023 04:01

I barely mask the various offensive odours by opening windows and using reed diffusers.
My house probably just smells of dog, damp flannels, full bins, and a faint whiff of orange and cinnamon though, if I'm honest.

Well if you hoovered 4 times a day it wouldn't. I had no idea people lived like that!

lemonaddde · 08/05/2023 04:27

I open several windows first thing in the morning, and leave them slightly open all day unless it's too cold.
If it's warm enough I leave a couple of small upstairs ones slightly open at night.
When it's too cold to leave them open I air the house for 5-10 minute periods during the day.

Always open the kitchen windows when cooking.

Open windows during / after eating smelly food in a room.

Wash cushion covers, curtains, bedding and other soft furnishings regularly. It's things like that, that smells cling to.

Mop hard floors regularly with scented floor cleaner/disinfectant.

I have a wax burner and when I'm at home I usually have it on. I use quite subtle, clean smelling ones. The ones I get from Asda have scents such as 'fresh linen' 'Egyptian cotton' and 'laundry basket'. They smell quite natural like you've just done a load of washing and hung it all up. People often walk into our home and comment on how lovely it smells.

I find plug in and auto air fresheners more artificial and chemical smelling. And the plugs in worry me as I know someone who forgot about it and left one plugged in for weeks. It dried up, overheated and set on fire causing substantial damage to their home and nearly killed them all. They are also useless at getting rid of smells they just mask it for a bit. Cleaning and fresh air is better.

ColdBrewInSummer · 08/05/2023 04:56

I can’t open my window all the time because I live in a busy city and it’s noisy. I do try to open a small window for a while during the day though to let in air.

I have an air purifier, a essential oil diffuser and a few expensive candles (Diptyque smells amazing) that I will light in the evening after I’ve cooked. I always use the extractor fan when cooking, always (try!) to clean up straight after dinner.

I also put vinegar down the drains.

readingismycardio · 08/05/2023 05:28

Open windows as soon as I wake up (they are open all night in summer when it's hot), and then open then again as soon as I finished work (wfh). No air freshners, they are toxic.

Theoldwoman · 08/05/2023 06:15

No fake things. And we have a dog.

Windows open all year round 24/7. Clean benches with a bit of disinfectant. Clean toilets the same. Plants. No dirty or damp clothing or towels lying around. Fresh bed linen regularly. Rubbish taken out to the outside bin regularly. Dog and cat brushed. Robot vacuum on 2-3 times a day.

njg616 · 08/05/2023 06:59

Zoflora with hot water down plug holes

Carpet fresh

Candles

This

I agree, synthetic smells are revolting.
Open the windows, clean soft furnishings regularly, no carpets downstairs and if you have animals (I have a dog) throws are changed washed at least every few days.
