Changing bedding - how often is too often?

SorryButThatsAFact · 06/10/2022 21:06

So, a friend of mine recently popped over for lunch and as she stayed a little longer than expected, I asked her if she wouldn't mind giving me a hand to change the beds.

Somehow we got on to the topic of how often bedding should be changed and I said I did mine twice a week. She was completely aghast and said she only changed hers once a fortnight and that twice a week was 'far too often'

I've always done mine twice a week, just like my mum did, so have never given it much thought.

So now I'm wondering what's a 'normal' number of bedding changes.

Any thoughts?

Does that include manky students though? Normal families change sheets weekly in my experience. Fortnightly is an occasional grim blip.

I don’t think “Normal families” do change sheets weekly, though. I think that’s a bit excessive.

TheMoops · 06/10/2022 21:54

Fortnightly.
And that seems normal amongst my group of friends.

Bananaramram · 06/10/2022 21:56

Right now I do it every week (on a Friday so I have snuggly clean sheets when I have a lie-in on Saturday). However, I also shower every night before bed for maybe three minutes max - in, body wash, out and always lukewarm not hot. (Proper shower every morning!)

Debating on if I skip the showers and wash sheets weekly or keep the showers and I wash sheets fortnightly.

Sheets are the only thing I wash at 60 degrees.

I have no idea which is better for the environment.

CatchersAndDreams · 06/10/2022 21:56

There used to be a poster who changed hers daily many years ago.

I do a Saturday morning clean and they get done then. Sometimes I just switch sides in my bed and do them fortnightly.

ScurryfungeMaster · 06/10/2022 21:57

I change mine once a week but I'd probably do it every other week if it was just me in the bed.

Fitted sheet and pillow cases weekly and duvet cover fortnightly.

Same here.

Ihatemyroad · 06/10/2022 21:58

Once a week on a Sunday is the norm for a lot of people I know.

Humans sweat a huge amount over night so that combined with the shed skin cells makes a perfect environment for bacterial growth. Hence grim to not change weekly. Pjs also get a lot of said sweat and skin cells so every other night pj changes in our house. It’s your house and your bed so do whatever suits you, even my show home immaculate friends only change their bedding monthly so clearly we all have different priorities- I’d rather a dusty skirting board but clean sheets, other people change tea towels monthly but beds every other day.

I don't think I have ever picked up a bacterial infection from my bed. I don't think my own dead skin cells have ever harmed me. I don't sweat a huge amount at night. Not all bacteria are bad. In fact your natural fauna are a whole lot better than detergents and chemicals unnatural to the skin. I change sheets when they look dirty or to quote @BeautifulElephant when a shooting star manages to capture my gaze.

ilovepixie · 06/10/2022 22:00

Once every 5 days. I love fresh sheets.

namechangeforthis66 · 06/10/2022 22:00

Surely you do it as often as you can be bothered and no amount is too often. You could do it every day if you wished. Personally for me once a fortnight is plenty but whatever suits!

Mangledrake · 06/10/2022 22:03

People sweat at night if the room is hot. Otherwise, minimal:

washingtoncitypaper.com/article/221338/straight-dope-do-you-really-sweat-one-liter-each-night/

Is there a possible overlap between the heating on at night people and the sheets changed daily people?

I sleep with windows open all year round and change bedding ... less frequently than most on this thread Grin

jewishmum · 06/10/2022 22:04

Two weeks of sex, sweat, farting, sleep drooling and dead skin cells? Sounds fine. As I said you wash your clothes because your body touches it. Why doesn't this apply to bedding? Shudder.

CousinTime · 06/10/2022 22:06

Boomboom22 · 06/10/2022 21:09

If you are confident to ask a friend to help, the sheets definitely don't need changing 🤣

This!
i would be mortified at asking a friend to look at my bed sheets. Unless I was disabled/physically unable to do it which you said you painted her house so guessing not.
weekly here

HeadacheEarthquake · 06/10/2022 22:06

Weekly if I'm on top of things, try to take them to Johnsons in a big purge and have fresh bedding for weeks. 2-3 weeks if I am struggling.

Dunnoburt · 06/10/2022 22:07

When it starts to stink!!! 😃(fortnightly if I can be arsed)

itwasntmetho · 06/10/2022 22:07

Once a fortnight, I have two pillows that both get a turn being under my face and both get turned both sides up so that would be a clean pillow side every few days.

Buteverythingsfine · 06/10/2022 22:09

Ideally weekly, realistically fortnightly.

NCHammer2022 · 06/10/2022 22:11

Once a fortnight unless they’re actively mucky. We shower/bath before bed and wear pyjamas.

Don't forget poo crumbs 😱😱

Like a PP, have never got a bacterial infection from my bedding, nor come to any harm from it. So again, what's actually grim about it, other than you just thinking it's grim? What harm am I going to come to?

Mangledrake · 06/10/2022 22:11

Skin cells - maybe 1.5 grams a night max. Doubt they all sear through pyjamas onto bedclothes too. If sheets smell or are dirty of course change them, but I wouldn't worry about skin / sweat apart from that.

Nogoodusername · 06/10/2022 22:11

Weekly but sometimes if it has been a really busy week it will slip to fortnightly (I have to do a clothes wash daily for four of us)

Well I don't have sex in my bed, fart, or drool that I'm aware of and I'm not a sweaty person - am generally cold so I do fail to see how any of those things could actually be harmful in any way on sheets not changed for a few more days than some would like ...

namechangeforthis66 · 06/10/2022 22:13

Also the washed clothes you speak of are a barrier too

PatientlyWaiting21 · 06/10/2022 22:15

Once a week, should do it more but effort!
