Changing bedding - how often is too often?

So, a friend of mine recently popped over for lunch and as she stayed a little longer than expected, I asked her if she wouldn't mind giving me a hand to change the beds.

Somehow we got on to the topic of how often bedding should be changed and I said I did mine twice a week. She was completely aghast and said she only changed hers once a fortnight and that twice a week was 'far too often'

I've always done mine twice a week, just like my mum did, so have never given it much thought.

So now I'm wondering what's a 'normal' number of bedding changes.

Any thoughts?

Weekly or every ten days ish. Can easily stretch to fortnightly or longer if we’re away a lot.

It's so odd you asked your friend to help you with a domestic chore like changing your sheets.

For a while prior to starting HRT I was changing my sheets twice a week as was so hot / night sweats. Generally I change them every 5 - 7 days now.

I've no interest in whether you think it's odd or not.

Weekly is normal, fortnightly is a bit grim but acceptable if only one person in the bed and/or showers every evening. Less than that is gross unless bed only slept in occasionally. Id do twice weekly if I had the time and weren’t so environmentally conscious.

I don’t think weekly is normal at all. I do think statistics show that actually it’s about 24 days on average in reality - I looked it up only recently.

Dougieowner · 06/10/2022 21:38

Once a week.

user1487194234 · 06/10/2022 21:38

Twice a week here
Once by me on a Monday and by my cleaner on a Friday
I love fresh bedding

Rocketclub · 06/10/2022 21:39

Once a week but I have the dogs on my bed so if they have jumped on it with muddy paws it gets changed straight away

Ok - you do realise you posted on an open forum for opinions & people will offer those on any parts of the thread that strike them as being unusual or comment-worthy?

rookiemere · 06/10/2022 21:44

Fortnightly.

silentpool · 06/10/2022 21:44

Weekly for top sheet, bottom sheet and pillow cases (sometimes 2x a week if it's very hot) and fortnightly for duvet cover.

Comedycook · 06/10/2022 21:45

I aim for weekly but it's more like fortnightly. Twice a week is a lot

Yika · 06/10/2022 21:45

Normally once a week but have just dropped down to fortnightly because of the energy /cost of living crisis. Twice a week feels a bit excessive / unnecessary.

Can you explain what's grim and gross about changing the bedding fortnightly or every 3 weeks? What exactly do you think will happen to those of us who leave the bedding on for 2 or 3 weeks before changing it? I am probably extra gross as I only change my pyjamas once a week. I do shower every morning, wear clean knickers daily, clean bra and shirt/blouse/t-shirt every 2 days (every day if I've got hot and sweaty).

Humans sweat a huge amount over night so that combined with the shed skin cells makes a perfect environment for bacterial growth. Hence grim to not change weekly. Pjs also get a lot of said sweat and skin cells so every other night pj changes in our house. It’s your house and your bed so do whatever suits you, even my show home immaculate friends only change their bedding monthly so clearly we all have different priorities- I’d rather a dusty skirting board but clean sheets, other people change tea towels monthly but beds every other day.

Yes, I do realise that. I guess it was my mistake for expecting people to comment on the actual question and not to make judgements on something that's none of their business.

Does that include manky students though? Normal families change sheets weekly in my experience. Fortnightly is an occasional grim blip.

Germolenequeen · 06/10/2022 21:48

People who shower in the mornings - what makes you think you are clean enough to not change sheets hourly daily or weekly?

I shower at night so I'm very confident I can get away with every 3 weeks 😅

Germolenequeen · 06/10/2022 21:48

And sleep alone 😬

KangarooKenny · 06/10/2022 21:50

Weekly.

SpringIntoChaos · 06/10/2022 21:51

I'm definitely veering towards Team Grim 🤷‍♀️🤣

LimpBiskit · 06/10/2022 21:51

It depends if you lie on the bed in your "outdoor" clothes🤣🤣🤣

Shinyhappyperson22 · 06/10/2022 21:52

Aim 7-10 days. Sometimes 7 sometimes nearer two weeks. Shifts and life permitting really. It’s fine. We shower and are clean/tidy. Not particularly sweaty or anything.

bigshoutout · 06/10/2022 21:53

Fitted sheet, top sheet and pillowcases weekly, duvet cover fortnightly

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 06/10/2022 21:53

I'd love every week but fortnightly for me.
That's when it starts to feel gross.
I have a 2.5 year old so fresh sheets are down on the list.

TwoMonthsOff · 06/10/2022 21:54

I do weekly, however we have had a lovely hot summer and that was easy could get them washed and back on in one day, with winter approaching will still be weekly but will involve airer/ dehumidifier, which is more of a chore really
