Boring question - how often does your washing machine go on?

As a family of 4 (2 adults, 1 toddler, 1 baby, oh and a cat) our washing machine is on every day, and every so often, twice a day. I feel like this is too much. It's expensive, not environmentally friendly and constant work (I know that goes without saying with 2 dc).
Any tips?

At least once a day. Probably 9 times a week. Family of 5.

Workinghardeveryday · 03/07/2022 14:13

Family of 5. Ours goes on 2-3 times a day

ColourfulOnesie · 03/07/2022 14:14

Family of 6 - twice a day usually

stayathomer · 03/07/2022 14:14

Family of 6 here, once a day and 3 or 4 times on whatever day are all off as is a day of sheets and showers!!

FrownsAndDimples · 03/07/2022 14:17

Family of 4. 9 and 4 year old DC. I do 4 loads a week. We rewear things a lot. Can't imagine doing a load every day!

ReeseWitherfork · 03/07/2022 14:19

Two adults, a (potty training!) toddler, two babies and a dog. One dark load, one white load, one colour load, towels every other week (two loads), bed linen on the other (two loads). (Then usually there’s a supplementary load if the dog has created muddy towels, the toddler has had an accident too far away from the next load to wait, similarly if the babies have been sick.)

So six loads. Not sure how I could do it in less.

2 adults, 1 child. DH is very tall & his clothes are very large(!) & he gets very hot in summer, sometimes wears 2 or 3 t-shirts per day. I am the opposite - small, & do not need to change my clothes nearly as often. DD is normal for a 10 y/o. About 3-5 wash loads per week. More if the weather is very hot, as we try to clear any backlog, maybe give the curtains, duvets, pillows etc a wash while we can, as we have no tumble dryer.

Maverickess · 03/07/2022 14:23

Mine is on 3-4 times a week on average, but there's only 2 people here (though ones a teen) two loads are our clothes and then there's bedding, dog beds, towels for the others.

So I'd say with double the people (and a toddler and baby) you're doing quite average. I couldn't wear my work clothes more than once, but I do wear PJ's and out of work stuff 3/4 times before washing, I often have 2 sets of clothes on the go at one time, one lot for walking the dog, doing the garden etc and another for going out shopping, to a friend's etc, and I have to watch the teen doesn't wear something for 15 minutes and then throw in the wash basket.
I invested in more work stuff so I can save it for a full load, which helps keep it down a bit and when DD was smaller I used to strip her to a nappy and bib for messy meals meaning the clothes stayed clean so less changes through the day. I hand rinsed bibs too and hung to dry day to day and they went in when I had a full load ready.

EdithGrantham · 03/07/2022 14:23

2 adults, 1 baby, 3-4 nappy washes (2 different cycles each time to get them clean) a week, one or two light loads, 2 dark loads, towels and bedding every other week so 7-9 times total, or 10-13 if you're counting cycles separately.

Theoldwoman · 03/07/2022 14:24

No tips here. I do 2-3 loads a day. 4 of us plus a dog and cat.

megletthesecond · 03/07/2022 14:26

Me and two teens. Twice a day, sometimes 3.
Sporty stuff needs to be washed quickly and I don't like dirty laundry waiting. I always line dry too so if the weather is good it's washed.

MarmiteCoriander · 03/07/2022 14:26

Adult couple and puppy- no children. Only 1-2 loads a week, max. 8.5kg drum.

Amei · 03/07/2022 14:28

Family of 3 - twice most days!

fernz · 03/07/2022 14:28

I live alone and generally 2-3 times a week. Usually one load is bedding, towels or kitchen towels and the other two are clothes separated into like colours (darks, whites, reds or brights etc.).

Calamaristarter · 03/07/2022 14:29

Family of 4 and 1 dog. Ours gets used about 5 times a week. That includes washing the bed linen and towels once a week

DoNutSweatTheSmallStuff · 03/07/2022 14:30

Family of 4 - both the washing machine and tumble dryer are on every day. I'm dreading the next lot of bills :-/

Potstip · 03/07/2022 14:32

Family of 2. Twice a week

Terriblethirtytwos · 03/07/2022 14:33

Babies and toddlers don’t just get themselves filthy but parents get filthy too when our clothes get covered in peanut butter, mud, and sick. So where we would have reworn clothes (in simpler times!) we now end up washing them as they aren’t clean. Toddler, baby, and two adults here. We do sheets, towels, whites, colours, and darks every week, and a wool wash every so often. This usually works out as 6-9 washes per week. Washing machine goes on most mornings, sometimes twice a day if I’ve skipped a day. Expensive, wasteful, and time consuming. But I don’t know how I’d reduce it to be honest!

Mrstumbletap · 03/07/2022 14:33

Family of 3. 3 times a week.

BertieBotts · 03/07/2022 14:35

Family of 5 and anything from once a week to 3-4 times in one day. I do laundry a bit sporadically.

catfunk · 03/07/2022 14:35

2 adults - 4 x a week on eco setting (takes ages but I run it overnight)
1 x lights
1 x darks
1 x bedding
1 x pants socks boxers for tumble drying

Sparklybutold · 03/07/2022 14:36

When DD is vomiting (as she has been the last few days) 4-5 times a day.

Otherwise once a day.

Mommabear20 · 03/07/2022 14:36

Currently 6 times a week, will be once a day when baby arrives. 1 persons laundry Monday-Friday, towels and kids swimming stuff on Saturdays and bedding on Sundays

Sparklybutold · 03/07/2022 14:37

Oh family of 4 with 2 dogs

I relate to this post the most. I have no laundry schedule. When the basket is full, I do a load of each type one after another (eco setting, takes all day).
