Has anyone removed their salad drawers?

I'm quite short and our fridge is tiny so it's really difficult to take stuff out. I end up ignoring it and everything goes off Blush so I've taken them out.

Has anyone else?

Can someone explain tins in the fridge please? They obviously don't need chilled, is it just lack of cupboard space?

Notbluepeter · 16/04/2022 00:14

But the reason veg and salad lasts longer in the drawer is because they offer a more humid environment than the rest of the refrigerator interior.

Only if I ask the salad nicely first
YesILikeItToo · 16/04/2022 00:17

The ‘beer crisper’ makes sense to me too. You’ll never get a nasty surprise if you find a forgotten beer in those godforsaken drawers. Forgotten salad is a much sadder story.

LondonQueen · 16/04/2022 01:08

I like to put wine in our salad drawers! Salad just sits on the shelfs. I do have other trays I use though which work better

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/04/2022 06:55

I put flour in ours (not lose!). I was told it preserves the flour longer and prevents flour mites.
...or is someone laughing at me? Hmm

Templeblossom · 16/04/2022 07:00

No
Its designed to have temperature zones so the salad doesnt freeze.
Not sure I would want to risk stuff going manky.
Also bending down for stuff like yoghurts which we use more etc.
I also dont get the tins in a fridge.
If its unopened then it doesnt need to be in the fridge.
If its opened then it shouldnt be stored in a tin.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 16/04/2022 07:04

@Ornamentalcabbages same here, the deeper part of the draw space is exactly the right dimensions for a six pack and two more Rows can line up along the front!

aprilsunshine777 · 16/04/2022 07:15

I was thinking this the other day. DP Always puts things in the salad drawers at the bottom and it's like they don't exist to me. They one day DP says "why didn't you eat all this fruit/veg/yoghurt etc I got?" But I genuinely forget to even look in them and pretty much only see what's in front of me!!

TenRedThings · 16/04/2022 07:29

I thought they were for hiding things you don't want the rest if the family to eat Wink

This is what I do too. All the flour bits in bottom drawer (I had a weevil problem so a lot of dried stuff in there)

I never keep salad in mine. I keep all the things that don't go off quickly like pickles, sauces, salad dressings etc. I need salad where I can see it to avoid forgetting it and it going off. Works really well
CaptainMyCaptain · 16/04/2022 07:39

There is something wrong with my fridge so anything in the right hand veg drawer freezes. It's OK for carrots but I can't put actual salad in there. I'm now inspired to re think the whole arrangement.

Blone · 16/04/2022 07:39

Are these large salads that you're all talking about? Wink

wastedtwenties · 16/04/2022 07:45

Loving all the responses! I think we might need to start posting photos.. Grin

I've tried putting condiments in as well but we hardly use them much tbh. The ones we do are too big to fit in

Our salad drawer is broken and I was stressing out about how fo fix it. It never occurred to me that I can just remove it! 😃

UrsulaPandress · 16/04/2022 07:49

I’m another who puts stuff I don’t want eating in there.

DH has never opened the salad drawers.

If you can, try swapping the drawers over and see if the 'problem' moves. We have a Bosch fridge /freezer and one drawer apparently will 'chill' to zero degrees (the two drawers are not next to each other but one above the other) The other thing that occasionally has happened is if something is touching the back of the fridge it can freeze - that might be because it's in a paper bag - I don't know.
Jenjenn · 16/04/2022 08:45

No but I use one for all the cheese (handy for coralling little packets) and the other for hiding treats. Chocolate in the bottom, bag of salad on top, kids haven't twigged it in years Grin

Thanks Mum, we wondered where you hid it. 👍
WhiskersPete · 16/04/2022 09:12

I also have a boring life OP. I get over-excited by storage solutions. I love them!

WhiskersPete · 16/04/2022 09:14

I do know that the salad drawers are expensive though. We were going to replace ours as they were cracked but didn't bother at £30 each!

You could definitely sell your unused ones if you do take them out.

toomuchlaundry · 16/04/2022 09:15

We also have a meat drawer in our fridge.

MyMumsJenjenn · 16/04/2022 09:20

We've got a special holder for six Cadbury's Crème Eggs! How weird is that? AND the Rolo eggs fit too!
Thisisit2022 · 16/04/2022 09:25

I still use mine for salad as I always have a lot of it! Salad drawers work well for me. Milk in the middle of the fridge on its side (shouldn't keep it in the door part as it's not as cold). Jars in the door part.
