Just a fun post.

Recently doing a huge renovation in our own home and am absolutely mortified at the dust everywhere, I keep having visions of visitors coming to the door and seeing all the dust everywhere, it is thick!

I also currently have a spatula sticking out my down pipe drain as we have just unblocked it and it’s to catch any old leaves/moss until it’s replaced 🤣

@Cheekypeach

Well my toddler watches lots of TV in particular paw patrol, no RG uni offers yet though Wink
Time will tell. They might get one after graduating to Hey Duggee (best thing on the box imo).
TakeSomeMoreTea · 15/02/2022 15:54

I've just been browsing the internet at homes because of this thread.

Someone has a material armchair with a cushion in their posh bathroom near the toilet. Does anyone on here do this. Is it to talk to your nearest and dearest whilst they shower or bathe? (not while they are on the toilet hopefully).

Puffalicious · 15/02/2022 15:54

@Badbaddog

And *@Puffalicious*, I think we amuse each other, am I at least allowed to say that??
Absolutely. Fair's fair. I've enjoyed the banter. No hard feelings. All's fair in love, war and MN threads.

Walking through the house in your shoes and telling me I don't need to remove mine. Urghhhhhh. When Kirsty and Phil do it, I'm screaming at the TV. Naff Italian looking furniture that isn't Italian.

TerraNovaTwo · 15/02/2022 15:58

I hardly ever visit other people's houses.
Things I would judge though:

Dank smell of tobacco/fag smoke.
Nicotine stained walls and furniture.
Visual clutter everywhere - why oh why do people think they need to hold on to so much crap?!
Or incredibly sparse signs of/lack of home decoration and comfort.
No books whatsoever.
Dirty, unhoovered carpets.
Overly sanitised/sterile type home that doesn't looked lived in.
Untidy neglected garden.

Badbaddog · 15/02/2022 16:05

@Puffalicious likewise 😊

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 15/02/2022 16:17

I don't need to judge anyone else, I can judge myself for the lack of cleaning and neglected garden. I like to think it's a phase. Which means one day it won't be like this!

But I wouldn't enjoy someone else's house with a strong smell of smoke. I couldn't stay there long.

IamwhoIsayIam · 15/02/2022 16:21

I am fascinated by how divisive books are and it has really made me question why I need so many!

We have (roughly) 50 metres of books storage across all rooms mainly on custom build shelves. I have built a book castle.

I like if I am talking to someone about something that I can go and find the book or the reference if I want it. Some belong to now deceased family members so are sentimental, some are childhood favourites of mine now waiting for my son to read.

I pass onto charity shops fiction I will never read again or want to lend anyone but the rest- its making me quite anxious just thinking about giving them up!

Straighttalking1 · 15/02/2022 16:23

A property over child proofed. Stair gates, room gates, kitchen gate....cupboard and drawer clippy things so that the kid can't drag a pot and pan to play with. Just calm down....send me an article about the kid who died falling down two steps, or the kid who drank the contents of the under sink cupboard, fell out of bed and got brain damage. GrinGrinGrin. Remember this is for fun, so don't slap me guilty MNers. Lol

Oldh · 15/02/2022 16:33

@SnipSnipMrBurgess

A house with no books is so pretentious honestly I always hate when people say that.

You don't know where people keep their books, all mine are on my kindle including my library books due to my physical disabilities.

Its just pretentious notions. "Oh I don't care for material things, just books and art and conversations ".

Knobs.

Quite Grin. My books are far away from where any visitor would normally go.
Badbaddog · 15/02/2022 16:41

I hide my books upstairs so people don’t ‘borrow’ them while judging the amount of dust on them

FantasticFebruary · 15/02/2022 16:54

@Hotcuppatea

Those big words that some people have. Like SLEEP on the bedroom wall and EAT on the kitchen window sill.

What are they for? Is it in case you forget what you came into the room for?

That's an idea actually!! I suppose you can get them individually made!

'glasses'

'Slippers'

'Cardi'

I'm sending some Christmas Oresents coming on!!

Headabovetheparakeet · 15/02/2022 17:01

I'm curious about the 'no books' judgement. Someone walking around my house may assume I don't have any because they're all in my office which guests never go into.

Should I be prominently displaying them in the hallway so everyone knows I own them?

Can’t speak for others, but for me, it’s very homely to see books stacked or laying around, on the move, in the process of being read/borrowed etc. for me it’s very familiar and makes a home feel a home. So I like it. Same goes for magazines, newspaper supplements, I like when’s there’s “stuff” that I want to pick up and read around me.

I didn’t list “no books” on here but I imagine it’s similar for others.

To people who say “I read the news online” I never see it as the same thing as a paper newspaper; I like buying a paper because I’m not selecting which articles I click on and read, I’m getting a neutral blast of the news and and not getting stuck in an online echo chamber.

Yes, otherwise everyone will think you're thick and unrefined.

That's the intelligent thought process!

Theworldisquiethere · 15/02/2022 17:15

Smells! Not all smells, I know things like drain smells can be hard to get rid of sometimes, but houses that smell like cat pee or cigarettes. Mouldy food on the side. Gardens with cigarette ends everywhere or dog poo all over.

felulageller · 15/02/2022 17:17

I'd hate to think of anyone be judging me!

The things I find rank are dog smell, animal faeces, poo in the loo, no loo roll or hand towels or soap (this is a really quite common!)

Headabovetheparakeet · 15/02/2022 17:17

@DrSbaitso

I'm convinced people only say this because they've heard other people say it and think it makes them sound intelligent. John Waters has a lot to answer for.

A love of books and a love of reading aren't the same thing so the 'no books' brigade just come across as a little...uneducated...

Imyourvenus · 15/02/2022 17:20

Horrible smells, although Im aware my house probably smells of dogs😖

I do enjoy reading, and books...I'm a Folio Society fan. But there's something about the performative fetishisation of both that pisses me off a bit.

StScholastica · 15/02/2022 18:11

The house with several cat poos behind the TV! I judged that home and will never forget it.

CheltenhamLady · 15/02/2022 18:19

Cluttered house. Just put stuff away, or get rid of it.
Books on display unless in a designated room. Ours live behind bifold doors in the study.
Animals on work surfaces/sofas.
Dirty worktops/full bins/stale odours.
Grey, glittery decor.
Astroturf.
Dirty bathrooms.
General grime.

Omg, I am so judgey.
