Welcome to the first Flylady thread of the decade! This is a friendly ongoing thread where we follow (loosely. In some cases, very loosely. Blush) the Flylady method for sorting out our homes and lives!

Newbies are always welcome here! It’s a long running thread so please don’t worry if we appear cliquey. There’s a lot of chatter and support for all sorts of things, alongside the housework stuff.

Over recent months we have agreed that big lists of daily links aren’t necessary - on a daily basis I will post (if I remember... it is maybe 18 months since I last hosted so please forgive any screw ups Blush) a link to the launch pad, which is where you can access the information for that day - babysteps, missions, daily focus etc. But if you’re confused about anything, please ask!

Check out the website too - but we suggest not signing up for the millions of emails.

Information on getting started here.

The great thing about Flylady is that you jump in where you are. Everything you do is progress. Don’t worry about not “keeping up”. Any achievement, however small, means progress.

Anyway, huge thank you to Stressy for running our very busy December thread! Thanks

And... HAPPY NEW YEAR FLEDGLINGS!!!

Oh and I painted my nails mainly just to put off starting the maths work so not quite an anti-procrastination day!

LaneBoy · 15/01/2020 22:25

Ooh, maths :o I love maths.

DS was saying he’s finding it boring though. Which is fair - kept things pretty basic while DD was home (she so clearly has dyscalculia) but TBH he needs and is ready for more. He got quite excited when I told him about the first thing we might do so hopefully I can get my head around organising that maybe over the weekend.

Achieved nothing but some lovely time with DS and the turing tumble as he didn’t want to wait until tomorrow. He was so excited!

How old are your dc lane?

Is it just your son who you homeschool?

LaneBoy · 15/01/2020 22:39

Yep just DS (10) home ed now. We took him and DD1 (12) out of school almost five years ago when they were struggling for various reasons but DD1 was always a little unsure if she wanted to try again or not. In July she decided she definitely did and she just started in yr8 before Christmas, hoping to get EHCP sorted eventually.

Determined to crack on and make a significant difference in the house today!

List too long and varied to write out in detail (and I want to sneak in to bathroom early) but basically need to make inroads in to boudoir, get ready for weekend (a lot to do), make some sort of pulse/bean squash casserole type thing, start some serious admin and tidying work in home office, finally, finally eliminate the very last traces of Christmas, such as the odd Christmas tea towel still in use, the last bit of Christmas cake on silver board thing, put away extra large cheese board we only ever use when visitors come, update address and birthday book, start putting linen cupboard back to rights, start January's sewing project, continue laundry, exercise etc etc.

Have a good one everybody!

Strategicchoring · 16/01/2020 05:29

Thinking of you today Willow Flowers

Stilllivinginazoo · 16/01/2020 05:32

I also need to make inroads in boudoir

Strategicchoring · 16/01/2020 05:34

Btw Bower and others: what happened to the decluttering fabric and wool monthly craft thread (which was an offshoot of this one) with pics last year? I had fully intended to join you but didn't make it past month one. Did it carry on?

I have a question for some of you. Do any of you have any advice for my DD as she is trying to switch to vegetarian? I got her a good women's multivitamin, she's just been experimenting with tofu this week, but really only just got started on it. She hasn't been a big meat eater for the last couple years, but is only now making the jump. I told her I am okay with it, to let me know what I need to buy but she's going to need to make it as I'm usually stretched for time after work making dinner for everyone else. I've helped her when she's needed it but not had to that much really. I really need to pay better attention to zoo I think it is as those meals sound delicious! Do you have any pointers or things to look out for? Sorry it is a bit of a long post all about me and my DD. I haven't had a look around to see if there is a vegetarian thread or anything yet either. I'm worried they're not as friendly as you lot!

HungryHazelEyes · 16/01/2020 05:43

We3 I forgot there was an app! I wish I could download it, but I have no space left on my phone! Really should delete a few I don't use any more but I don't want to regret it. How do you like it? I may just bite the bullet and make space for it.

frankincenseandmur · 16/01/2020 07:03

Morning all! DD2 seems to be coming down with something, she has a raging temp bless her. So not too much planned today. My biggest task is washing yesterday’s clothes ask didn’t last night and am now regretting it

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 16/01/2020 08:14

Hazel, I'll be keeping an eye on those veggie ideas too - DS1 decided to go veggie when he went to Uni, didn't manage it in the first term as living away for the first time was so complex, then recommitted on 1 Jan and seems to be managing it. I just like to keep a weather-eye on what he's posting on WhatsApp (stuffed peppers last night, all good) and need veggie things to bounce into my repertoire when / if he comes back here.

Hope your DD is feeling better soon, frank. SC, thanks for the flowers - so many many memories of unknown "lasts" today and yesterday (Dad was fine in the morning, collapsed about 2.30 and was gone within 12 hours). I didn't call in after the school run that morning, because I was supposed to be taking DS3 there for tea. I shall just get through today as best I can.

To Dos

  • morning routine
  • walk hound
  • financial planning stuff
  • bathroom clean (no, really!)
  • tuna mayo for lunch
  • bacon and eggs for tea
  • maths with DS3 and email his teacher (he's really struggling)
  • get DD to Greek

Lane, you said your DD has dyscalculia - do you mind explaining how that manifests itself? By all means pm me if you don't want to wave it all over the internet. I think DS3 might have something similar (he absolutely freezes when faced with numbers and can't remember the most basic arithmetic, but is more than capable of understanding complex mathematical concepts without any actual numbers involved) and he reminds me of how DS2 used to be around words before we nailed the dyslexia diagnosis for him.

Right. Must get on. Cherry waves to stressy, Expletive, tinselette (hope you are better), chic (hope you are not swimming, Gloucestershire seems pretty damp at the moment), foxes, KT, bower, zoo, rachael, We3, That - think that's everyone, apologies to anyone I've missed, I'm on my phone and can't scroll! Dog walk ahoy.

Tinselette1940 · 16/01/2020 08:39

willow thinking of you today 💐.

Strategicchoring · 16/01/2020 09:38

At college now and have finished an assignment so counting that as a Ta-da too.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 16/01/2020 10:29

Hazel I'm not sure about the app tbh. I mean it's nice to be able to tick things off but I could manage without it so not sure it's worth deleting something else for.

Stilllivinginazoo · 16/01/2020 13:42

willow will be thinking of youFlowers
Tinselette glad you are on the mend!
Frank hope DD is ok,poor lamb

Hazel/vegetarian ideas
Try to eat a little dry fruit every couple of daysadd to cereals, trail mixes etc

At least one green veg daily for iron and other trace minerals.include a vit c rich source too so tomatoes, berries, oranges etc to maximise the iron uptake

Eggs and cheese at every meal to meet protein needs isn't great.think beans, pulses, nuts and seeds for wider mix nutrients

Dairy if tolerated is highly undervalued.think milkshakes with fresh fruits and nuts/seeds/nut butters

Variety is by far the biggest thing you can do to maximise nutritionso bigger the mix of fruits and veg, nuts, seeds and pulses the better!
Ideas-
*Bean burgers, sweet potato wedges a type of slaw or salad
*Falafeldelicious with tahini sauce (or ketchup if use herbs and garlic)and serve with couscous and salad or veg
*Add nut butter instead cheese to risottocourgette, mushroom and cashew butter is yum.as is roasted squash and chickpeas with cumin and sweet paprika and chopped almonds
*Things like frittatta or use muffin tins
for mini ones and freeze spares-make quick lunch/breakfasts.always add tomatoes or peppers to absorb those vitamins from the eggs or serve with orange juice!!
*Stews/casseroles with beans/pulses and served with bread/couscous/dumplings are great this time of year

If you need/want more ideas shout out!

Food medic has great recipes on her Instagram account,a lot are vegan/vegetarian and as a registered doctor she's all about balance

rachael12345 · 16/01/2020 14:22

Hazel - vegetarianism isn't nearly as complicated as us meat eaters think.
Sonething which changed my thinking when trying eat less meat - ypu don't actually "need" a central protein item per meal - ie a meat substitute. I now only eat meat prob 4/5 meals per week, out of 21 and prob one if those is bacon brekkie/ poss a ham sandwich for lunch.
Just leave out the meat of most meals. Then snack on nuts instead of biscuits or crisos

Substitute where it is easy eg veggie sausages.
Dired soy mince is v useful for things like bolognese / saucy mince things.

I'd suggest finding a good veggie cafe and going these regularly for ideas.

rachael12345 · 16/01/2020 14:37

Went into town today to a new but rubbish baby group plus shopping post office etc.
Blooming exhausted now! Barely done anything at home...
Make soup would be bare minimum prob everything else can wait.

LO asleep on my knee and I don't really want to disturb him..

Have made a new weekly plan and got dh aproval of his bits of school run dog walks etc. Feels good to have routine back.

He has agreed to take antidepressants! I feel so happy about this, but we talked about this in couples counselling yesterday and he came home v miffed and sore with me I can't figure it all out in my head. V complex emotivvons going round. I'm too tired to process it all properly. Perhaps I was too blunt and called a spade a spade - but felt I've spent too long trying to be super sensitive of his fragile self esteem. Think I was verging on ultimatum - honestly the thought of another 5 years of his up and down moods really frightens me. . Too too exhausting I really don't think e realises how much of this I hold on to to keep the house and family running relatively smoothly

Admin to do list is overwhelming me! Parking tickets, tax return al sorts. Yuck. Think I'll stay home all day tomorrow and try to focus on that. Also got v sore back and I think it's making me crotchety

Dd is sooo exhausted right now I'm tempted to keep her home tomorrow but I so want the day quietly to myself too (with babe, but he's easier than she is ) .. will have to ponder this one.

Was determined to stick to fl weekly mission abd clear out bathroom cupboards but the thought right now is too much..

LaneBoy · 16/01/2020 15:13

Rachael I’m really glad he’s agreed to try meds. It is of course down to individuals whether they try treatments for their own conditions but I do think it’s different when it is impacting on everyone else in the family.

Be prepared for things to get worse before they’re better - ADs can be like that sadly.

I’ve had a shit morning. Felt genuinely fine to go to playgroup but about halfway through started feeling dizzy again. Ended up needing DH to come get the toddler, and DS stayed with me to get a cab home. Was well looked after. I even drank tea! (That only happens when ill.)

Guess the POTS flare up is a worse one than I thought. Yay
