Anyone fancy a '30 day to declutter the house' challenge?

Inspired by the fact I got up at 5.30am this morning to make the house look reasonable for workmen coming at 9am! I came to the realisation the house would be so much easier to keep clean if I didn't have as much stuff. Currently said stuff has been hidden away in cupboards and drawers and rooms workmen will not be entering, but everywhere feels so much nicer (although unlikely I'll ever be able to find anything ever again!!!) Have tried decluttering in the past, but usually lose interest/motivation with no end goal in sight - so was thinking 30 days until the end of November to get rid of as much stuff as possible. Anyone fancy joining me on this challenge?

Another bathroom shelf. It's been a busy few days, we did that just to keep in the game.

Yousignup · 06/11/2018 21:51

I lied! I also went through a pile of papers and found my car papers. Only took me 6 weeks...

stegosauruslady · 07/11/2018 16:06

DP and I took a ton of stuff to the charity shop today and he has the car filled and with stuff for the tip which he is dropping off in a bit. There is so much more space, especially in our bedroom and in the dining room.

As far as decluttering goes now, I don't have that much left to do. Current list of things to declutter is...

Stationery
Kids toys (I'm doing this on Sunday while they are out!)
Rest of kitchen (this needs to be done when the new cabinets and cooker and hob are in though)
Games cupboard

Then I'll need DP to accompany me in decluttering the cellar as that is mostly his domain!

Final bathroom shelf done! Run out of easy jobs now... tomorrow will tackle DD's wardrobe after work, which could take a good week...

namastayinbed · 08/11/2018 06:37

I'm in - 2 dc so Christmas will bring a lot of extra stuff, plus dd has a birthday.
Have a bag to go to the charity shop today - will count up items and see what day I'm on!

Today: primer that doesn't work (I think it's aged at teenage skin and mine is certainly not that!)

Bellabutterfly2016 · 08/11/2018 15:41

We've moved twice in the last year and a half (not thru choice!) and I didn't have time to sort thru some stuff before we got moved (both times!!!) and so what I did was just box it up and I've got about 14 large cardboard boxes in corners of rooms of stuff to go thru although I'm a bit of the opinion that if I haven't seen it for a while, I can't possibly need it.

Baby number 2 on the way tho and so I need to de-clutter in preparation for that as the room for the baby is rammed with stuff.

I've been eBaying but it's slow going and everyone seems to want something for nothing!!!!!!

I'm biting the bullet and just sending loads to charity as it's not carboot season AND I need it out the way ready for Christmas

Crazy few days! Over the weekend cleared loads in DD room, just have a pile waiting to go in the loft and a couple of bags to donate
Bathroom, cleared a big bin bag and scrubbed within an inch of its life!

Didn't get anything done yesterday, but had a job interview yesterday for my dream job and been unofficially told I've got the role! Grin
Think I'll use the nervous energy while I wait for the call to make a start on the kitchen today!

Been missing but still in the game! Still a declutter a day, no matter how small: 3 drawers, 2 bags of books and a broken pair of hair straighteners that have "just needed a screw" for the past 5 years. Even threw some of STBEH's papers away, but stopped. Still a bit raw, that one.

Yousignup · 13/11/2018 21:37

Just spent 10 minutes getting a nice little bag of out of date medicines and fancy condiments together. I'm on a roll!

Food cupboard organised, all half eaten packets now rotated to the front. Anny out of date stuff gone. Seems silly but even tiny jobs like this help.

Chucknology · 15/11/2018 18:47

I'm belatedly in.

practicallyperfectinmyway · 18/11/2018 00:46

Welcome chuck!

I've had a productive day with a kitchen linen cupboard clearout, tidied up garden a bit then tackled what I've been dreading / the loft, finally. Went round clockwise and rearranged where things were and chucked what was totally unloved. I've got all my summer clothes up there now.

Now that it's organised, it will make going through old clothes / bags etc much easier which I'll do between now and when I get the Christmas decorations down. Phew!

Yousignup · 18/11/2018 17:02

Still here! Two days behind, but I spent most of today lying on my bed "thinking". Planted some bulbs at last (rather than letting them rot in the cupboard, and fridge lovely and organised. Also shelf next to bed emptied and tidied.

lostvoice · 19/11/2018 13:24

Cleaned the oven this morning, very over due!
Also waiting on a new bookcase for DDs room to arrive today, at the moment any books etc are in piles in front of the built in wardrobe.. I have no idea what's in there Blush

Already noticing the difference doing general tidying! Must keep going!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 20/11/2018 10:15

Ahha! Found you again, for some reason this thread dropped off my 'I'm on'. I'm doing ok, filled the skip!...but I need to crack, we've now got new carpets being fitted the first week of Dec & new sofas the week after! So need the minimum amount of shit in here to make moving it all out for the carpet fitter easier Confused. I have already done behind them though. But there's just so much clutter that I'm seriously daunted.

Yousignup · 21/11/2018 09:50

I'M STILL HERE!! Actually today is the last day of my 21 day challenge on my phone. There's still loads to do, but I think the house is noticeably calmer. Lots of little jobs done:
Bag of clothes to give to friend's son
Top and bottom of wardrobe done
Mystery suitcase emptied
Cardboard box of old bills gone

I'm staying on this thread till the end of the month!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 21/11/2018 10:25

Well done You! My 30 days runs out on 2/12 so I'll be here til then. Then I'll probably start a Christmas one as it was useful last year & I'm bound to have neglected somewhere Grin

Yesterday I sorted the dds room so that they could actually tackle it & their floordrobe is no more!! Ds got out of doing the boys room because he had to go & get his head glued after falling head first on a desk at school Confused. Also made a big dent in my washing mountain it's now just a large hill. Today I'm going to do some smaller jobs in the lounge as I need to take the 3yo to nursery after lunch.

lostvoice · 21/11/2018 20:06

Hi all, hope everyone's getting on okay?
Half way through my 30 days, but getting very nervous about Xmas and loads more clutter arriving 🙈

One load of washing away from the bottom of my basket, just waiting for DH to give me a hand moving things up and around in the loft
Hoping to have a really good go under the stairs at the weekend!

Yousignup · 28/11/2018 09:10

Top Of The Fridge. 15 years to accumulate, 3 minutes to bin.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 28/11/2018 21:51

Returning after Halloween hiatus (oops). Have had some steroid injections into my joints and have been ordered by doc not to strain myself (how convenient for a procrastinator)! I am giving my arse a big kick tomorrow and will get back to it!

Thank you for this thread purpleducks Smile

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 29/11/2018 09:59

But it is Doctors orders Martin! I feel for you, I have hypermobility & my joints were in agony in the cold weather, they're not great now it's gone damp either.

You that was is with the cupboard under the stairs but it was 7 years in our case. However now it's empty DH is going to make a door for it (with a lock) so we can hide all the Christmas presents in it Grin

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 02/12/2018 09:27

Anyone around today?

No decorations up yet. I want to get the downstairs looking lovely before taking them down from the attic.

I did a monster job yesterday - completely emptied out and scrubbed out the aquarium (and changed the substrate to lovely black sand). It's like new and when it cycles I'll be buying a few fish. It took bloody hours so it took over the other good intentions I had but at least it is done now Smile

I'll do the rest of the sitting room today and also tackle the hall.

How is everyone else?

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 02/12/2018 13:21

I am. Ish. Dh gave up & has ordered a new dishwasher realised I put 5 people in my last post. There are 7 of us, I've not mislaid 2dc!

I need to start clearing my lounge ready for new carpet on Wednesday. Tis quite daunting, we'd not moved in when the current one was laid & we only had 25% of the furniture & crap we do now. Dh is off for 7 days after today to help though.
