Anyone fancy a '30 day to declutter the house' challenge?

purpleducks · 31/10/2018 10:06

Inspired by the fact I got up at 5.30am this morning to make the house look reasonable for workmen coming at 9am! I came to the realisation the house would be so much easier to keep clean if I didn't have as much stuff. Currently said stuff has been hidden away in cupboards and drawers and rooms workmen will not be entering, but everywhere feels so much nicer (although unlikely I'll ever be able to find anything ever again!!!) Have tried decluttering in the past, but usually lose interest/motivation with no end goal in sight - so was thinking 30 days until the end of November to get rid of as much stuff as possible. Anyone fancy joining me on this challenge?

I find them brilliant! Having stuff in a giant pile helps me to focus on what I want to keep, rather than what I want to throw out which seems to result in more stuff leaving the house. Having a precise order in which to do things keeps me on track too, I'd get distracted.

I'm also enjoying that I'm currently only thinking about decluttering, rather than trying to tidy and clean and declutter at the same time. One job at once, suits me beautifully!

GET RID OF THE SHOEBOXES yes i am shouting at you kocoloco.
Which is a bold move for someone already slacking on getting things out of her own house.... but im here to cheer you on atleast 😂

Betsy86 · 05/11/2018 17:18

iwillkeepthishouseclean · 05/11/2018 18:03

lostvoice · 05/11/2018 20:34

She wasn't too bad in the end bless her! Jumperoo was very helpful!

Got most of my stuff in the bedroom organised except make up and jewellery,
So... clothes 🙈

DHs side is another a story! Hoping he will be inspired once I've finished!

Anyone managed to get their DP on board?

Yousignup · 05/11/2018 20:55

No DP, but DC definitely on board. Unless it involves their own rooms, that is...
Managed a smallish wooden box, just a bit bigger than a shoebox. It's been a long day, all I could find time to do...

KisstheTeapot14 · 06/11/2018 12:31

Bath toys sorted, some stashed in attic, some given to local nursery.

Kewqueue · 06/11/2018 12:36

Decluttering my kids' room today. I have loads of books they don't read anymore and no-one to give them too!

PorridgeOatsAndApple · 06/11/2018 12:46

Do you know any teachers who have class libraries?

Does a local charity shop accept books?

Otherwise for well thumbed or damaged books I do now bin them quick, hard as it feels.

(As kids have wanted to get clear of outgrown books I've kept a very small shelf of MY favourites for possible grandkids!)

Pineapplepassion · 06/11/2018 12:50

I'd love to join too, there's too much junk in our house and we will be moving at Easter.

pumpkinpie01 · 06/11/2018 12:56

We had a wardrobe de clutter on Sunday DH wanted to keep a box full of football kits that had been unworn for years! Luckily I managed to persuade him otherwise then he got quite in to it ans sorted out his drawers, dropped 2 big bags of stuff at the charity shop, that felt good !

PorridgeOatsAndApple · 06/11/2018 13:06

I am going to empty and sort out my wardrobe this week. That's where I store a lot of Christmas purchases so it makes sense It's not the real problem however: That is a stash boxes of stuff from house moves past! Plus long-standing paperwork issues.

Tbh having stalled on Kondo previously I will begin chipping at my paperwork too in 10 minute bursts with a timer this evening.

I want the house presentable for December but with some underlying issues addressed too. It's not asking too much surely?Grin

JosephineHass · 06/11/2018 13:07

I'm in process of declutterting right now. And it feels so good, like freedom!
The last straw was my mum, which brought sooo much crappy stuff for kids during her last visit, most of it is already broken or simply just dust catchers.🙄
Tried to fight with the incredible mess whole week but yesterday decided that enough is enough!😤
ATM around 5 bags waiting for charity shop, 1 box for our nursery and the rest of clutter is going to trash.

madmum5811 · 06/11/2018 13:10

second hand good condition toys are flying away on our local fB page. Now is the time to do it.

madmum5811 · 06/11/2018 13:12

I have taken the attitude, would I pack this to move house, if not in the bin/recycling it goes. This morning doing the kitchen found some things that did not get used so binned.

gallicghoul · 06/11/2018 13:19

Well I've had a good declutter in DDs room. She'll go nuts when she finds out!

Aventurine · 06/11/2018 13:31

I've got rid of some stuff from the top of the kitchen cupboards. I cleared out some games from the top of some shelves downstairs and have put drinks there instead that were cluttering up the place. Need to get rid of some CDs and more games

KisstheTeapot14 · 06/11/2018 14:06

Books can also be given away on freagle/freecycle.

Have given away lots of stuff on here over the years.

Often things are re-used in unlikely ways - e.g artists and makers.

A whole box of old newspaper cuttings - on the bonfire this weekend gone :) Cathartic.

stegosauruslady · 06/11/2018 14:31

DP is in favour...however, when it comes to actually decluttering anything of his, it all becomes suddenly essential! The DDs have done brilliantly at their clothes and books so far, I'll have an initial go at their toys this week, then they can go through the stuff I'm not sure about.

Today...not much decluttering, as I am exhausted from prepping last night for our new kitchen cabinets being delivered. I will go and do my bureau later though when I have chocolate to fuel me! New kitchen is being fitted (by DP and I!) starting tomorrow! That will help with the decluttering as I am going to have glorious drawers and beautiful wall racks upon which only lovely things are allowed.

DonaldDucksTowel · 06/11/2018 14:43

I’ve just got rid of a whole kitchen shelf full of half eaten Easter eggs ... in November 🤦🏻‍♀️

You’re all doing much better than me 😐

Pineapplepassion · 06/11/2018 15:00

Can any of you please recommend a website for passing things on that doesn't need you to have a Facebook account.
I deleted my account earlier this year but so many things seem tied to it.
I've just sorted and binned a shelf of old videos and got a pile of kids books to donate.

KisstheTeapot14 · 06/11/2018 15:13

Freagle you can do via any email account, no need for faffbook.

Pineapplepassion · 06/11/2018 15:17

Thank you Kisstheteapot

Kewqueue · 06/11/2018 17:50

Do you know any teachers who have class libraries?
Thanks Porridge! I asked the infant school next to my kids' school and they want them. Grin Am binning the tatty ones. I live abroad and charity shops don't want them which makes it hard to have a clear out! Got rid of 8 bags of clothes and toys today and quite frankly I am shocked at how much STUFF we have. Although to be fair most of the clothes were hand-me-downs that I accepted to be polite but which we didn't need.
