Anyone fancy a '30 day to declutter the house' challenge?

purpleducks · 31/10/2018 10:06

Inspired by the fact I got up at 5.30am this morning to make the house look reasonable for workmen coming at 9am! I came to the realisation the house would be so much easier to keep clean if I didn't have as much stuff. Currently said stuff has been hidden away in cupboards and drawers and rooms workmen will not be entering, but everywhere feels so much nicer (although unlikely I'll ever be able to find anything ever again!!!) Have tried decluttering in the past, but usually lose interest/motivation with no end goal in sight - so was thinking 30 days until the end of November to get rid of as much stuff as possible. Anyone fancy joining me on this challenge?

Well I've managed to get the utility done, but like you Donald I keep walking into the kitchen and not knowing where to start!!

Good tip Monday - I am certainly guilty of this. I have the bag from yesterdays decluttering sat by the front door!!

Did you manage the STBEH bedside drawer yousignup? I must admit I do have a shelf in the utility with ex's stuff on I keep finding. It's above the door, so I can't see the stuff unless I actually go up there. I know I should get rid, but can't seem to so it's taking up a shelf instead for now!!

Glad you are feeling better Bernard Smile

How's everyone else getting on? Right, I'm going to do 30 minutes in the kitchen - wish me luck, I need it

Didn't manage STBEH's bedside drawer, as I couldn't face it... but cleared the coat rack in the hall! It's amazing, no looming shadow in the hallway.

yousignup · 01/11/2018 18:25

Purpleducks, no I didn't, but by the end of the month It Will Be Gone. Along with a bin sack of clothes he left for me to take to charity. For some reason I just can't. But I am working up to it!

DonaldDucksTowel · 01/11/2018 18:26

I managed to get a grand total of 0 things out of the house and a whooollleeee lot of new stuff coming in 🤦🏻‍♀️
Might do a whip round once kids are in bed

KisstheTeapot14 · 01/11/2018 19:55

I'm in. Made a good start in Oct - 2 bin bags of outgrown clothes to friends with small children...did the toys too. Gave DS a box to put things into which he wanted to let go of. Posted a few old faves to my cousin's little girl - she loves them :)

Coats of yesteryear have gone. My hardest thing to shift is old news paper cuttings and books. I write, so I always think of them as 'capital' - but doubtful that they are anything except clutter. DH says he wants a big bonfire!

KisstheTeapot14 · 01/11/2018 19:56

Have to make sure any trips to charity shop do not end in me bringing home more than is donated...

purpleducks · 02/11/2018 09:12

Morning all.

Well done on the coat rack yousign

Did you manage the whip round Donald?

Welcome Kissthe

So, day two today. What are everyone's plans? I managed about half of the kitchen yesterday so was quite pleased with that considering I really didn't know where to start. Got rid of nearly a bin bag full of stuff and my cupboards are neatly organised instead of full to bursting so I can't find anything!

My plan for today is to finish the kitchen. I'm thinking of going away for the weekend, so could do with getting some new clothes to wear - I know that doesn't really fit well with trying to get stuff out of the house, but I have nothing that fits at the moment! So I don't think I'll manage anything other than getting the kitchen finished today.

Which also means I won't get anything done over the weekend, so I'll plan now to get the living room done when I am back on monday!!

I did! Though you can't tell 🙄

I got rid of a few craft bits in the playroom, some chewed up baby books, about 15 babygrows that are a size too small, couple of knackered bits of kids clothes, a broken light shade, 3 broken water bottles and the outgrown kids shoes

Literally doesn't look any different, but I feel a bit better

I think I'll need quite a few random bin bag collections before I get to proper decluttering

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 02/11/2018 11:06

So far, Halloween decorations packed up and ready to return to attic. Bag of summer clothes ditto.

Hand sewing done (so that said garments can be used and not cause clutter!)

Will continue cracking on today. My DC's are still on their midterm break (Ireland) so will endeavour to do little and often. It will be a different story when they're back in school next week though!!

Good luck today Smile

KisstheTeapot14 · 02/11/2018 12:08

Ha! Yes, the hand sewing pile....teetering at ours and needs to be done.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 02/11/2018 12:45

I think the world has stopped spinning! DH has announced he's sorting his shed tomorrow & will actually put things in the skip Shock

Martin mine are still on half term too (I'm in the West Mid) so I won't be able to get cracking properly until next week. Thurs & Fris are the main days I can get on as DC4(3) is in Nursery all day & the baby doesn't mind what I'm doing as long as he can be with me. Will reserve Mon/Tue/Weds for smaller jobs each week that can be done in 1 or 2 hours.

Well done to everyone who's making progress!

yousignup · 02/11/2018 18:54

Bernard! Sorting the shed! Are you sure it's not just a cover to spend hours in there, turning stuff over in his hands and muttering "this will come in useful, this will".
I am pleased to say I did a drawer. Not The Drawer but a drawer all the same. Have filled a small plastic bag with washing machine bits that I now need to file away somewhere.

AandB201517 · 02/11/2018 19:28

Ugh I haven't even started yet! I've had a bloody bad cold for the past few days. Hoping to start tomorrow though.

DonaldDucksTowel · 02/11/2018 23:26

The manky rug has gone!
That's it for today, I asked DP to do the floors while I put babies to bed and when I came down he'd declared it uncleanable and chucked it - slightly worried that it took him so long to notice but at least it's gone, calling it a win 👍🏼

...however we have a birthday tomorrow and there's around 15 parcels in the living room waiting for morning
I'm countering it by decluttering some wine and chocolate 🤷🏻‍♀️

Greycat11 · 03/11/2018 15:55

Didn't really get anything done this week as was full on. Just dropped off few bags to the charity shop today though so have made a little progress. Hoping to do more tomorrow.

Yousignup · 03/11/2018 22:50

Cleared the top of three shelves today! I have signed up to a 21 day challenge app so taking it very seriously. At the moment.

practicallyperfectinmyway · 04/11/2018 21:56

I'm in a few days late - just discovered this thread. Rearranged dd's bedroom today with a new desk and pedestal and had a good clearout.

Tidied my bedroom this eve but like a pp said, it would be so much easier with simply less stuff! I've too many clothes, bags, scarves, books, trainers, bedding and even dressing gowns!

I've 2 main personal challenges by Christmas - de clutter my bedroom and DSs. Secondly, the loft needs a long overdue clearout, it's heaving and I've an electrician lined up in 2 weeks so it needs attention by then.

Thanks for the nudge op.

Yousignup · 04/11/2018 22:00

practically Glad you made it, I was feeling lonely! Cleared out 2 tiny bathroom drawers. Rusty razors, old toothbrushes, all gone.

DonaldDucksTowel · 04/11/2018 22:16

Kids are back in school tomorrow (well half of them) so I’ll be on it properly now
The thought of all the shite that comes in with Xmas is just filling me with dread atm - I need to get some stuff out!

percheron67 · 04/11/2018 22:17

Yes please! Read this at 10.15 so shall start in the morning. Thank you for the idea.

Yousignup · 04/11/2018 22:17

Donald glad you're back! Just went to get DD a teddy from her wardrobe and all the coats in all the world fell out. Can't wait to start that one...

Zofloramummy · 04/11/2018 22:37

I have found my people! I need a major declutter before Xmas descends (with more fecking toys!). I made good start in the summer but have ground to a halt.

I am also guilty of having several half full charity bin bags that haven’t moved in weeks Blush.

I’m going to aim for being able to see dd’s Bedroom floor by Saturday.

lostvoice · 05/11/2018 07:13

Morning all!
Is it possible to join you?

I have a 9mo and we moved when I was pregnant with horrible morning sickness so I feel like we never got organised. Finally feeling ready to start getting my house back so made a start this morning!
Cleared out my two bedside drawers, ones now empty and the others nice and organised.

Hoping to get some more done today if DD co-operates 😅

stegosauruslady · 05/11/2018 13:56

Hello!

I'm in the middle of Konmari'ing my house, I started last week, was then laid low by a cold and temperature for a few days so back on the horse now. My aim is to be done by December 1st, ready for DD3's birthday on the 10th, Christmas and then the arrival of DS1!

So far, last week I cleared out 25 (25!) bags of clutter and unloved things. Today I am up to three bin bags which contained bathroom stuff (mostly out of date toiletries and medicine) and junk from under my bed.

I'm now going to build the drawers for DS1's changing unit/chest of drawers and sort and tidy all of his stuff (and sneak off to the charity shop some of the unnecessary tat MIL has dumped on us!)

lostvoice · 05/11/2018 14:32

Do you find the Konmari techniques helps @stegosauruslady ?
I was looking in to, but I can't pull everything out in one go with DD crawling round, might give it a go over the weekend when DHs around
3 black bin bags today from the bedroom!
And amazed how much half used make up and lotions I seem to have ferreted away 🙈
