The Organised Mum Method

Does anyone fancy joining me in following the organised mum method?

Back to work tomorrow after the summer off (work term time only) and need to get on top of a house work routine after struggling this last year or so to stay on top of things.

I suffer with anxiety and can easily get lost in my mood without structure and I like what I saw on the website. Will probably tweek the method as I go but it's a good structured plan to kick things off.

I work odd hours around the kids being at school but have a clear hour each day to dedicate to this. Plus I am sick of losing my weekends to playing catch up when I could be doing nicer things with the kids!!

Four of us in a 4 bed semi which is clean, just full of stuff that comes with having kids. It can get pretty messy!

Have done the odd bit of decluttering over the summer which has made a bit of a difference!

Looking forward to having a house that doesn't embarrass me on the odd occasion a guest arrives unannounced Blush

I tend to do TOMM anyway but in a less organised way. The pp who only cleans her loo once a week - I'm wondering if she has sons? That's when I upped my game there. But the daily clean is just a quick wipe. Then the weekly clean doesn't take very long at all.

I hope you don't all go out and spend a lot of money - you can achieve a lot with hot soapy water, a few old rags, a mop and a vacuum cleaner!

NerdyBird · 03/09/2018 00:17

Am I the only one who read her stuff and thought, but most of that is just 'doing your housework every day'?

greeneyedlulu · 03/09/2018 00:19

I'm also looking to get better organised around the house too.
I saw the other post for flylady so looked at that and signed up for the emails yesterday..... so far I've received 15 emails since last night!!!
That's too much for me so I looked at TOMM and that seems far more up my street so will look at that tomorrow at work so I can print a few bits off..... and unsubscribe from flylady!!

Good luck

Cynderella · 03/09/2018 00:22

@NerdyBird

No.

But I think the lists are an excellent idea for people who need a kick start. And the site is British and free.

Just had a flick through her website. Looks a bit too organised for me. And Friday Focus is out - I spend literally all the working day cleaning other people’s houses, there’s no bloody way I’m doing any of my own housework on a Friday.

dippyeggsandsoldiers · 03/09/2018 01:50

I LOVE the organised mum playlist on YouTube, I whack it on full blast and get my clean on 💃🏻

Cheekyfseverywhere · 03/09/2018 01:59

OP, just for suggesting this I think I love you im currently pregnant with my 2nd baby and although I am currently a sahm sometimes I just dont feel like there's enough hours in the day I was starting to panick about my house sliding but this looks great and I think I could manage this perfectly!

pastaandpestoagain · 03/09/2018 02:05

I've been doing this for a few months. Slipped a bit over the summer, been decluttering this week much to families disgust. A few years back I followed flylady but her love of trump meant I had to drop the Facebook part. TOMM is much more normal but obsessed with vacuum cleaners as a group.

Frankenterfer · 03/09/2018 06:44

I'm up for this, but my real issue isn't a lack of a plan but sheer exhaustion from work etc. And then the clutter. Thanks for the heads-up though OP, I do agree I like her approach much more than fly lady.

FairyPenguin · 03/09/2018 06:57

I was inspired by this earlier this summer. I’ve decluttered and deep cleaned the whole house a room at a time over the summer holidays and now it’s in a decent state, I just follow the general TOMM principle of 30-45 mins a day of SOMETHING. I tried the weekly routine but it didn’t work for me, I just make sure I do something that needs doing, and I’ve also changed my mindset so if I see something that needs doing which only takes 5 mins, I’ll do it, not leave for another time. I’ve realised it’s easier to keep a clean house clean than leave certain bits for ages and have to deep clean.

KaiserThiefs · 03/09/2018 07:00

There's a Christmas organiser starting now, whoo! I'm in.

We've recently moved and the summer holidays have only added to the chaos...I can't wait to get everythingvstraight and this looks an excellent way to get on with it.

AdventuresRUs · 03/09/2018 07:15

Im not starting xmas now - ours is fairly low key though. But I am interested in meal planing... can anyone link?

I think i struggle with "executive planning/organisation." Im 40 and silly high IQ but a get anxious about meals and cant keep a house tidy :( Really I should have had a career and paid someone else to do it - still its all easier to see in retrospect isnt it!?

AdventuresRUs · 03/09/2018 07:17

FairyPenguin (I love these! I rememeber seeing them in melbourne) thats so encouraging. I wonder at times if it is actually possible to change... your post suggests it is! I am starting to go round my rooms and sort them out (again...) Ive always hoped if I only got it tidy Id keep it tidy so now maybe I will!

knockknockknock · 03/09/2018 07:30

And Gem does a daily Spotify playlist. Normally brilliant and makes you forget you're doing housework.

I've been following the plan for a couple of months and love it. Really helped my mental health as I don't just sit there thinking my house is a mess where do I start.

Asterado · 03/09/2018 07:36

I’m with you!

I started the boot camp last week and completed it all but one room. Going to be following properly from today.

I decided to try it for vet similar reasons to you. I’m hoping it’ll help me few less overwhelmed and free up enough headspace for other things.

Bin85 · 03/09/2018 07:39

I'm in

beela · 03/09/2018 07:41

I'm in! Youngest dc starts school next week Sad so I'm going to get the house under control this term. Bring it on!

5000KallaxHoles · 03/09/2018 07:42

I do it loosely - in that I like the structure of a day to do a particular room, and the daily stuff is things I'd be doing anyway - but I tweak it a hell of a lot, don't need a specific day to do the hall and stairs with how this house is laid out - it's more just hoover the stair treads as I take the hoover upstairs to do the bedroom and wave a cleaning wipe over the skirtings another day. Likewise bedroom day I split over the bedroom and hall days - cos I'd never get all the bedding in, washed and dried over one day of the week only.

But knowing that today is living room and I need to basically dust down and bung the sofa throws in the washer at some point (although I tend to do those less frequently than she advocates) does the job for me. Don't tend to bother with the Friday Focus malarky at all either.

The basic idea that if you're doing a tiny bit a day the house ends up cumulatively cleaner and cleaner and cleaner and you don't hit that wall of "oh god the house is a tip" appeals to me though.

Stickmangate · 03/09/2018 07:51

I’ve just started this. I’ve dabbles so far but planning on doing properly once back from hols.

I like lists too op and I’ve stated a bullet journal of sorts. Have listed all jobs and levels so I can mark them off and know what I did last time or didn’t do so I can make sure I’ve got it all done. I can’t draw so haven’t make the journal prettyjuet basic grids with jobs listed. I joined minimalist bullet journal on fb

mrsoutnumbered · 03/09/2018 08:02

Mondays jobs are done! Phew! Mind you my living room is pretty bare so it doesn't take long to whizz round with a duster.

justcontemplatingsomething · 03/09/2018 08:02

theorganisedmum.blog/category/menu-plans/

@AdventuresRUs here's a link to the weekly meal plans on the blog. I don't follow it by doing what meals she's doing each week, but I do pick out the ones that appeal to me. It's revived my love for my slow cooker which was in the back of a cupboard. The meals I'd tried in it before all required loads of prep (searing this, frying that etc) that I found it more work than just making something to put in the oven. But with her slow cooker recipes you literally just chop a few things, pop everything in and leave it! So easy and really tasty too!

Elephantgrey · 03/09/2018 08:02

I am starting to do this. Like a lot of previous posters I have anxiety and I have ADHD/ dyspraxia as well. I am on maternity leave at the moment and have never been good at house work.
I have been watching all the cleaning videos. It has really helped me as I don't really know how to clean. My house is getting better. I can't wait for organisined Christmas. We want to do baby's first Christmas in our house. So excited!

AdventuresRUs · 03/09/2018 08:03

Oooh thankyou!

outnumbered77 · 03/09/2018 08:13

I love the idea of this but not sure where I'll find the 45 minutes every day. I work every minute the kids are out at school. Will have to try and do something though.

FairyPenguin · 03/09/2018 08:19

@AdventuresRUs - we saw those penguins in Melbourne too. Unforgettable!! Yes, I feel so much better now I’ve got the house into a decent state. It’s also inspired me to keep it clean as well. Have made new rules for the children too - their floors have to be clear at the end of each day - otherwise it ends up with piles of clean washing and toys scattered. It’s made it easier for them too.
