The Organised Mum Method

Does anyone fancy joining me in following the organised mum method?

Back to work tomorrow after the summer off (work term time only) and need to get on top of a house work routine after struggling this last year or so to stay on top of things.

I suffer with anxiety and can easily get lost in my mood without structure and I like what I saw on the website. Will probably tweek the method as I go but it's a good structured plan to kick things off.

I work odd hours around the kids being at school but have a clear hour each day to dedicate to this. Plus I am sick of losing my weekends to playing catch up when I could be doing nicer things with the kids!!

Four of us in a 4 bed semi which is clean, just full of stuff that comes with having kids. It can get pretty messy!

Have done the odd bit of decluttering over the summer which has made a bit of a difference!

Looking forward to having a house that doesn't embarrass me on the odd occasion a guest arrives unannounced Blush

With bathrooms I wipe the toilet after I've used it in the morning or last thing at night, do bath before I have a bath or while in the shower and wipe down sink and window sill while cleaning my teeth. I also mop floor on entrance way and hall day as have mop out and bathroom is off Hall. So everything gets done at some point.

New to this. But I will be doing the boot camp this week. Would I then just join with week 3 for the Friday focus?

Chimichangaz · 22/09/2018 12:26

I must be doing something wrong - I've not managed to clean every day this week - probably every other day, and not done Friday focus however I feel like I have spent much more time cleaning than usual? Spent about an hour and a half this morning cleaning bathrooms, hoovering and steaming floors. My house does look amazing though Grin

Ollivander84 · 22/09/2018 12:35

Bedroom dusted, hoovered and bedding changed

Steala · 22/09/2018 12:42

It's all about balance - for people who clean too much as well as those who don't clean enough. The method isn't going to produce a show home if you have a family, but neither will you stare at something with rising shame, realising it must be months or even years, since you cleaned the extractor fan/freezer/deepest darkest drawer.

I've been doing it to the letter this week - setting a timer and stopped after 30 very focused minutes. Obviously, it's rather dismaying when it's trashed within minutes, but it's superficial and 30 mins a week is enough to rescue it and make an incremental improvement.

PurpleMac · 22/09/2018 16:59

I'm hoping to boot camp next week - back to.work in 5 weeks after adoption leave so really want to keep on top of the housework! Downstairs is a dream right now but bedrooms are definitely a nightmare!

redavocado · 22/09/2018 20:23

I'm planning to bootcamp next week too! I've been stalking this thread for too long and just watching the dust bunnies multiply.

hodgeheg92 · 23/09/2018 05:36

chimi I'm definitely spending a little more time on the cleaning in total than I did before but my house is cleaner than it's ever been and I'm not doing the random stress cleaning of a certain room for hours when it gets too bad. It's a better balance.

Raspberry I also have completely failed at the bathroom still, still aiming to tag it onto Wednesday. Maybe it's because only 2 of us use it and DH is out all day but our toilet doesn't get bad enough to warrant daily cleaning Confused

I hope your wedding day was perfect littlechocola Congratulations!

doleritedinosaur · 23/09/2018 13:08

We got back off holiday Friday & it was amazing to come back to a clean & tidy house.
It meant I could just unpack & all the washing was organised in about 15 minutes. That has never happened before.

I just hoovered the living room today because my toddlers are being utter arses at the moment & there’s no chance of me doing it tomorrow but means I can do the other bits.

Going to try & stay on focus this week so I can paint the upstairs bathroom.

Tasks are definitely getting faster which means more can be done.
I have bought the method rhubarb spray & the smell is really good.

RaspberryBlonde · 23/09/2018 13:40

Thanks for the bathroom tips wineusuallyhelps and umberellaonesie, will give it a go this week. I also need to work out when I'm going to cover our dining room and playroom which as you can imagine is a disaster zone! Might try to do it with the living room tomorrow.

Hope your wedding was wonderful littlechocola.

Fallen behind terribly this week due to work Stress and exams.
Trying to do a bit of bootcamping in the bathroom today. Any idea what to do with a manky shower curtain? Not sure if I can wash it in the machine, maybe soak it in something?

hodgeheg92 · 23/09/2018 16:17

Summers I think I'd just bin it and get a new one, have a feeling they're something that can't be rescued but I hope I'm wrong!

I've used oven pride on the bottom of our oven 3x over this weekend, including leaving it overnight. I had absolutely no idea how gross it was in there Blush

TwittleBee · 23/09/2018 16:44

SummersB Hope the stress calms down for you hun

You may as well try to wash it in the machine before you buy a new one. I know they wash them in machines in Holiday Inn (sister used to be a manager there)

TwittleBee · 23/09/2018 16:45

hodgeheg92 oven pride is amazing stuff. Least you've done it now so you should be able to just keep on top of it 🤞

Lndnmummy · 23/09/2018 18:37

Oh I’m in! I will start tmrw for sure. I have done my own version but still wondering how the hell im doing the daily’s in 15 min? I will report back tmrw. Trying to ignore the fact that I could have got shedloads done today rather thAn read a 20page thread Blush

Lndnmummy · 23/09/2018 18:39

Can I ask how you do Bootcamp with a baby? I mean I can’t get much more than 30 min max done. Would I do it at night?i don’t get enough sleep as it is but perhaps it is worth doing 2 hours at night say between 8-10 to really get on top of things for a week?

Lndnmummy · 23/09/2018 18:41

Or slightly longer for the first week per room ie 60min for the first week? Then it will gradually improve as I get on top of it. My dh is keen to so he is ok board. His idea was that we will do 15min each of the daily’s when he gets home and the kids are in bed. That could work

Sparklyfee · 23/09/2018 19:19

Getting ready for boot camp tomorrow! Hoping that I manage to squeeze some other tasks in as well

2slicesoftoast · 23/09/2018 21:18

This is the first weekend in about 8 years when I haven't done any housework (except wash school uniform)!!!
Just sat down in the living room. It's tidy - I made DD and her 2 friends put everything away before they had tea, lol - so I can relax before bed.
Yes, it needs a good hoover and the windows are filthy after the storms but tomorrow is Monday so right now I can ignore :-)
Gemma - if you're reading, thank you for sharing TOMM (and the cowboy beans were delicious!).

2slicesoftoast · 23/09/2018 21:25

@Ldnmummy - I think it depends on how tired you are!
When I started I just did level 1 jobs and then 30 minutes each day in that room (I set a timer and stopped and started, but always stopped after 30 minutes). if I got lucky I did some "hidden jobs" like empty a drawer and sort it out. The idea is that the good you do builds up over time so your 30 minutes cover almost everything.
In saying that I have a cupboard in the kitchen and a drawer in my bedroom that are still resisting being organised!

SummersB · 23/09/2018 23:40

TwittleBee thank you. I’ll be getting there, my final exam is in a couple of weeks, after that life should become a lot calmer (if I pass).
The shower curtain is plastic-y, rather than fabric-y, so not sure about the washing machine. I will try and soak it in some bleachy water I think and try and give it a scrub. I have to admit in the past I’ve done what hodgeheg92 has suggested and binned it Blush Bit I feel I should at least try!
Hodgeheg92 well done with the oven! I agree ovenpride is amazing! I love my newly cleaned oven! Did a roast this afternoon and as soon as the oven was cool enough I gave the door and the bottom a clean Grin I’ll be dammed if I let it get filthy again!!!

hodgeheg92 · 24/09/2018 01:35

After the cleaning I've done to that oven we're never using the thing again! Grin DH fried some fritters tonight and I cleaned the oil off the hob straight after we'd eaten - before it would probably have sat there at least for a day before it annoyed me enough to clean it, now I just wipe it over as I clean up after dinner (DH tends to cook, so I do the cleaning up afterwards).

lndnmummy You could start by doing an hour each room for a week, or just jump straight into the 30 mins and it'll get done over time. It depends how bad your house is. The big thing about boot camp is the decluttering I think, which gives you more time to clean cos there's less stuff!

RaspberryBlonde · 24/09/2018 09:27

Nooo lndnmummy definitely don't sacrifice sleep! I have a 9week old so am not doing a proper bootcamp but focusing on the 30 minutes and then dealing with bits of decluttering as and when I can. It's fairly slow going (although that's because there's a lot of stuff to declutter) think your idea of taking a bit of extra time each day of you can is good, if boot camp takes a fortnight ago be it (likely to take til Christmas at my current rate!)

Littlechocola · 24/09/2018 09:52

hodgeheg92 and RaspberryBlonde thank you! It was amazing, I want to do it everyday!

We had a bit of a party back here afterwards which I haven’t touched. It doesn’t look like it will take long now guests have gone although we have more coming on Thursday.

redavocado · 24/09/2018 10:04

Day 1 done! Just waiting for the dryer to finish now. DD is having a particularly long morning nap so I'm not sure I'll be this efficient tomorrow.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a new mop? Mine is an old magic mop and I'm sick of the sponge falling out. I'm much more likely to use the thing if it actually works!
