If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and wine and cake along the way.

This is where, from the first of the month (seriously, HOW is it June already?!), we follow – loosely – the rules of FlyLady [see website here ]. (Pls ignore Flylady's barftastic language, and we suggest NOT signing up to her emails as there are rather a lot of them. All the info you need will be posted here on a daily basis.)

Helpful info on getting started here.

We adopt a three-pronged approach:

-start or repeat baby steps

  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone or area (yes, just 15 mins focused work a day makes a difference!)

and/or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

The launch pad is the place from which you can reach most other useful areas of the site: here.

NB
This is a very long-running thread so we may appear cliquey but we really aren't! All newcomers, long-termers, lurkers and intermittent returnees not only welcome to join in but positively encouraged to do so!

Another NB
Start where you are at!. There is no need to worry about being perfect – perfectionism = paralysis! There is no such thing as ‘falling behind’ with FlyLady, if you miss anything, just move on and continue as normal the next day.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Happy Flying one and all!

Hello all. I unexpectedly have some child free time today in town as in-laws have taken the girls to a farm park. So I have an hour and a half, going to look at some clothes which I hate doing but need to find something for my high school reunion .

Food shop wise I suspect we spend about £100 a week, sometimes more, sometimes less. I actually try to do more small Aldi shops as I have the luxury of being able to do that child free which means less waste and cheaper fruit and veg. I then get some ready meals from Sainsbury’s / Tesco’s. DH spends loads when he goes so he does the odd shop every couple of weeks / months but does get nice stuff but it blows the budget. Main problem is we don’t budget well enough. I plan to review this in september as this will go out the window in summer as I’ll need to go back to online Tesco shopping while the girls are off school.

Cag, honestly it is so stressful moving with a small child, it really is absolutely understandable not to be filled with joy atm Flowers.

Right... of to investigate some clothes Confused. What on earth do I wear??????!

[SC rushes in to thread, does a few steps of the treble reel, plays a few tunes on the tin whistle]

Guests have departed!!! (Feel horrible saying it in celebratory way because I do love them really especially now they are off down the motorway Wink!!)

Grin

Also feeling chipper because that awful muggy weather has lifted and I no longer feel like I am going to expire! It is beautifully sunny but cool and just the right temperature!

(c) I actually have some energy!

Hope everyone else ok and have had some decent sleep?

I'm not going to say what we spend per week on food (and wine) because the food element is more expensive here. Suffice to say, we are spending a lot more than we should, but things have improved a lot since meal planning because (a) we throw out a lot less and (b) I have been choosier about buying seasonal food and eating veggie/pulses regularly. Plus we have fantastic middle eastern shop a stone's throw from us that sells amazing jars of chick peas, huge sacks of fresh dried lentils, sacks of rice etc (which work out much cheaper than your average Uncle Ben's) mahoosive bunches of fresh mint/basil/parsley/coriander (also much cheaper than supermarket portions in plastic) and amazing lemons/ginger/melons/all med veg that are much cheaper than usual.

Yes Hills it's all about starch resistant carbs apparently and Zoo has a much better grasp on it than I have! Grin Cooling and reheating bread or rice apparently makes them more like oats or other slow release carbs.

Zoo we all did the cracker test there and then but I didn't quite understand it because the flavour was sweet all along for me ie it didn't change. (Suspect this might be a bad thing.)

Cag Hope you are not feeling so down today but take it easy if you are Flowers I can so identify with the difficult kitchen scenario! I've come to detest baking in town because my pantry and recently dead food processor all live a floor down, so I got fed up of going up and down 23 stairs to get to all the ingreds I need and then having to put it all back down again (with the inevitable two or three trips in between for things one has forgotten). Wierdly (because the kitchen in wreck2 is deeply "rustique" ie a cow shed) I love baking there because everything is on one level and all my baking ingreds are to hand in one large cupboard. The way architecture functions has a huge effect on how one lives and is not to be underestimated. So hopefully you will see a mahoosive improvement if you have a kitchen that is well designed and functions well!

Enjoy your child-free time Toostressy! Profitez as they say over here!

I wish dd had school dinners I've as it makes such a difference - bits for lunches such as fruit that isn't eaten just squashed in bag adds up. They have only just started building a canteen at dd's school. Most school dinners here (if indeed hot meals are provided which is rare) are supplied by outside caterers.

Foxes yes pet food definitely adds to the weekly shopping bill! (Must admit I sniff a bit when I am making veg soup nowadays because there are no buns to whom I can give the carrot tops and celery leaves.) Hope the work goes well today [proffers sustaining Cake ]

Zoo Sorry to hear you had an uncomfortable night on the sofa again Flowers Arf at gruel on the guest meal plan Grin Grin Thankfully the catering division (ie me) can stand down a bit now! Pissed off though because I have put back on the half stone I lost immediately before their arrival. (Can only blame myself for that though.) If I had a pound for every time I have lost and put back on that same half stone ... .

Hills sympathies re: jelly legs. I am currently trying to follow a plan from a book titled "Fit to ride in 9 weeks" involving excruciating contortions with an exercise ball. (a) 9 weeks is ludicrously and laughably over-optimistic (b) "fit" is definitely a relative term Wink interchangeable with "mad enough to... 3 Grin

Only dd has a school dinner. I still do packed lunches for ds1 and 2. They used to have a school dinner but its £10 a week each and they were always moaning or i would ask what they had eaten and be told just pudding. No way does it cost me £20 a week to do their lunches.

Ta da

Wash on x3
Dryer on
Washing on line
Dry washing sorted
All up fed dressed
Homework supervised
1dc dropped at a party

Cagliostro · 10/06/2018 11:59

I do feel slightly better this morning as I have finally started writing in The Moving Notebook. Just a list of questions we need to ask at the viewing (if anyone has any ideas of things to ask I’d love to hear them) and a page to write room measurements (shame I haven’t got a chance to print off the floor plans) but I have more ideas for pages of things that need to be written down to get out of my head.

Also includes a home ed plan - I have been freaking out about how to manage this, but after much mulling over I think the best thing to do is probably not to start anything new - this does mean not getting going on the new textbooks yet which is sad, but we have loads of half complete workbooks, some little packs of info (from charities etc), model kits etc that are one time use - so it would make sense to aim to use all of those up so we have less to take with us. Might be an interesting change of pace at least. I need to gather everything together and list it.

Laundry is on, and DD will be back from her workshop soon (her ballet school have started offering some occasional workshops in jazz and contemporary).

Scoopofchaff · 10/06/2018 12:07

Yeah, I can see how school dinners not economical if not eaten I've! Great list for a Sunday morning btw!

Cag perfect illustration thanks Grin Glad you feel a bit more chipper today! I'm sure people have probably already posted these sorts of links but just in case ....here here here here and here!

HillsBesideTheSea · 10/06/2018 13:05

freezing affects the way we convert the starches to sugars but the toaster reheating it makes the carbohydrate into resistant starch

The biochemistry of this concerning me. I don't understand how this is true. I need to go do some research but this is not how this process works in my understanding. Starch is a polymer of a sugar molecule. Freezing and heating shouldn't cause the combining of sugar into starch by my biochemical understanding. The only possible reason for this is a conversion from one isomer to another of the starch molecule and again by my biochemical understanding this shouldn't occur due to freezing and heating. I definitely need to look into this.

HillsBesideTheSea · 10/06/2018 13:11

Would someone be kind enough to linkie to the program? I have to leave 3 hours early for the 5hr run across the hills (making it an 8+ hr journey) due to road closures and events and tourists the pheasant does not want to kill your car it is 2miles from the road in. the. fucking. field. and is busy scritching for food Also if you pay attention to the road and not the view you will not fall off the side of the hill, 50 is fine and safe for this road if you look at it. Promise

Stilllivinginazoo · 10/06/2018 13:44

Sorry hills I can't do links☹️
Google The truth about carbs ?

I've
Feed your family for £12 a week
Step one.grow grass waist high.put kids out to graze.treat as cattle -poo fertilises garden ,thus no loo roll as they use it so prolifically(or at least they do in my house)
Step 2 ensure fence high enough or secluded enough s.services can't see what's going on
The end....

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 10/06/2018 13:45

Have had a thought about food budget. Tbh I suspect if we added it up with top up shops it is more than £100 a week. What adds up more I find is the snacks, coffees etc. As I say, I can’t see the point of attempting a detailed food budget now as summer holidays will screw it up but just make an attempt st this in September.

Ta da:-
Sparkly but not too formal too bought for reuinion. Hoping it is not too hot as it will look good with jeans but just adequate with other trousers and I hate my legs so not wearing a skirt or shorts. I hate summer dressing Angry. Also was late to meet DH so missed the end of his race so wife fail there. But at least I got a top.

Unexpectedly nice afternoon as invited to neighbour’s for a bbq :) just brought cagletini back as she was getting grumpy. First lot of baby clothes shaken out and put in the dryer (I had to wash DD’s white dobok ready for tae kwon do so thought I may as well wash some of the white vests etc with it. I’ve put a towel wash in now rather than another lot of baby clothes, at least it’s a start though.

Also discovered aforementioned neighbour has a slimline dishwasher. I didn’t know these things existed. Obviously being a family of 5 a full size one would be best, but it does please me to know that this size exists as we are more likely to be able to find a place for one at the new house.

DD and her friend have gone for a walk on their own. Limited distance but it does go through the woods. Eep.

Did you view house?
Waits with baited breath and hopes Cags like it. If you were closer I would come and help you pack.

firehousedog · 10/06/2018 18:40

Hey all, so many posts on here since my last post to catch up on. Everyone has been so busy :)

Keep postive Cag with the house move. It will all be worth it especially you get the reward of a garden at the end of it.

Did the kids like the Jurrasic Park film Zoo?

I've we normally spend about £50 on the weekly grocery baulk shop
at Aldi, then probably another top up £20 shop at Sainsburys on the Friday for some specialist stuff for the weekend. Not including cleaning stuff, etc, though which i get at wilkos.

Stressy i hope you made the most of the child free day. Always nice
when you find yourself with a free day Smile

We've been at my Dad's this afternoon for lunch and generally chilling out in the garden Smile Does anyone find their parent's hygiene level is not up to yours? Everytime i went to use the bathroom part of me just wanted to have 5 minutes in there with the bleach (the bleach bottle was sat next to the loo with dust on it) Blush I don't think my Dad and his fiance really give much thought to cleaning!

I did manage to get the basics done this morning

ta da

fed kids
dressed kids
washed dishes
wiped over kitchen surfaces
stripped the beds
put bedding in the wash
bleached both loos
pegged out the washing

Still need to re-make the beds, bath the kids, get the school stuff ready.

Cagliostro · 10/06/2018 18:41

10am tomorrow bower! Eeeek! Have been coming up with more questions and writing more in the Moving Notebook.

I also recycled a load of home ed stuff - just random bits and pieces that we finished with ages ago and little bits and pieces we will never get round to using. Made a note of more things to try and use up before we go. Home ed should actually be pretty fun if we get to use it all. Lots of little challenges, models to make etc. But all stuff that looked at individually isn’t really worth taking. Ideally I’ll put it all in one box that we can just take stuff from.

Wondering if maybe I should start collecting the stuff we definitely won’t start using, like the more advanced textbooks and bigger kits like a BBC micro:bit (generous friend bought it but it’s too advanced just yet).

I do feel more positive having made a little start (took the chance while baby slept). I suspect though it also helped sitting in friend’s garden for hours - it was making me think how soon we will have our own garden too 😍

Giggage · 10/06/2018 20:37

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea - I switched to supermarket cearl years ago and can not taste the difference at all, in fact, I prefer Co-ops own honey nut to kellogs and ASDA do a much wider range of cereals with much less sugar!

TooStressyForMyOwnGood - What do you normally wear day to day? If you could dress that up you will feel more confident and comfortable.

SC - I suspect you will be winding down for a few hours yet.

CAG - don't forget to ask for the date of the last boiler service. Don't forget to get the locks changed in case there is someone who has a key that you don't know about.

As far as moving day goes, we used to this:

print off a sheet of paper with an arrow on. Get lots of sticker dots, assign a different colour to each room.
As you pack a box, place a matching colour sticker for the room onto all 6 sides of the boxes. For those boxes that need to go upstairs, add the relevant coloured dots to the sheet of paper with the arrow on and pin this to the bottom of the stairs, pointing up. Make sure each room as the relevant coloured dot on its door. It should be much easier to unpack in all the boxes are in the right room in the first place, if not, a quick glance will tell you where they should go.
The very first trip should include the kettle, teabags, coffee, milk and mugs. These MUST be the first things you unpack. Get the kettle on. Make sure you have money for a takeaway - cooking will be the last thing you want to do.

The second thing that must be unpacked are the beds and bedding - do these and make these up before anything else. Making a bed up when you are tired from a long day just adds to the misery and stress.

The third thing are the sofas, because they are big and chunky, you need an empty room to fit them in, get these in first before the boxes if you can.

If you are using removal men, make sure that VAT was included in the quote! My friend fell foul of this after everything had been removed. It's a bit naughty to be honest, not to include VAT on quotes and annoys me no end.

My parents used to move house a lot when we were children so got used to it and picked up loads of little tips that make it just that bit easier.

I've got a slimline dishwasher and kicked the empty kitchen sink cupboard along to make the room If your cabinet is not plastered in, it could be an option.

Don't take clothes off the hangers, just bind the hangers with the clothes still on with elastic bands, and lay then on top of boxes in the car, they can then be hung straight up. - use one of the suitcases for other bits, such as nappies, night clothes, toiletries and phone chargers.

Make an inventory, including photos of tools, jewellery and other valuable items - they have a tendency to go "missing". Casually mention the inventory and photos to your DP/H, in front of the removals company. During the chaos of moving, you will not notice anything missing until it's too late and too far down the line. If you can padlock drill cases and toolboxes - do so. Put jewellery in the suitcase with the toiletries (in the lining preferably) so you can check easily and quickly. We learnt this the hard way.

Be kind to yourselves, look after yourselves and try to enjoy it. It is stressful but worth it!

My ta-dahs:

Writing the above for Cag
Windows cleaned inside and out
ironing
bedding washed and put away
cleaned living-room carpet
dusted car
made bed
swished and swiped
cat litter
put in hook to hang up wok
paperwork filed
papers shredded
computer scanned and emails sorted
hoovered livingroom
hoovered stairs
hoovered bedrooms
hoovered landing
meal planned for week
online shop done to pick up tomorrow.
dusted
kitchen cobwebs
ensured DS has everything ready for school tomorrow.

I think that's' it.

Like STILL, I'm going in the bath for a long soak.

Hope everyone had a productive day.
