If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and wine and cake along the way.

This is where, from the first of the month (seriously, HOW is it June already?!), we follow – loosely – the rules of FlyLady [see website here ]. (Pls ignore Flylady's barftastic language, and we suggest NOT signing up to her emails as there are rather a lot of them. All the info you need will be posted here on a daily basis.)

Helpful info on getting started here.

We adopt a three-pronged approach:

-start or repeat baby steps

  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone or area (yes, just 15 mins focused work a day makes a difference!)

and/or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

The launch pad is the place from which you can reach most other useful areas of the site: here.

NB
This is a very long-running thread so we may appear cliquey but we really aren't! All newcomers, long-termers, lurkers and intermittent returnees not only welcome to join in but positively encouraged to do so!

Another NB
Start where you are at!. There is no need to worry about being perfect – perfectionism = paralysis! There is no such thing as ‘falling behind’ with FlyLady, if you miss anything, just move on and continue as normal the next day.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Happy Flying one and all!

Sorry to hear that a lot of people are ill or just feeling off and fed up. It's horrible.

After having done nothing housework wise for about 4 days, I have finally given myself a kick up the backside to get on with it again.

So far today I have:

Changed bedding.
Done 2 loads of washing and dried them.
Confirmed a phone contract has indeed been cancelled and I'm not just being fobbed off.
Re-hung living room door so that it actually closes.
Vacuumed living room.
Copied relevant paperwork for student finance, ready to be sent on Monday.
Vacuumed coffee table drawers.
De-cluttered handbag and car.
Vacuumed Hallway.
Washed all candle holders and lightshades in the Living room.
Took meter readings.
Did a maintenance wash for the washing machine.
Ran cleaner through dishwasher.
Cleaned the oven.

Scoop - I can fully relate to your need of alone time in a hot bath to get away from everyone. I can not cope with having visitors in the house at all. I do think it would be nice every now and again, but I know I would instantly regret it so stopped a few years ago now as the feeling of constantly on show or on call became too much. It started to feel as though I was putting on a one woman show for 24 hours a day...and I can't act.

Too stress - congratulations on DD1 having a successful dance display. You must be so proud.

Scoopofchaff · 09/06/2018 18:04

That's an impressive list Giggage! Star

And thanks - managed 30 mins in the bath - like you, I need my own space more as I get older. Used to host all the time (as an expat it's sort of obligatory) but I enjoy it less and less nowadays.

Time to start prepping supper!

Baby step no. 10 for Sun 10th June is here. The power of 15 mins!

We will be starting in Zone 3 tomorrow: The Main Bathroom and One Extra Room (June 10-16) if you do zone work at weekends that is! Spend 15 mins a day decluttering this area (and/or do a mission!).

If you are at the stage where you have finished decluttering Zone 3, here is the detailed cleaning list for the bathroom etc.

No missions on Sunday because it is the weekend! Yay!

Sunday's daily focus is "renewing your spirit" : ie doing something for yourself which makes you feel refreshed.

The habit for June is: keeping hydrated by drinking water regularly.

A summary of the above (which should update itself daily) can be found in the flight plan here.

Tada
Watched truth about carbs on BBC I player(very interesting)
Started menu plan for the

Zoolets declared wanted easy to eat tea as lil zoo tired and D's so snotty breathings becoming an issue

Stilllivinginazoo · 09/06/2018 18:28

Whatever veg left in fridge.ffs

Scoopofchaff · 09/06/2018 18:30

Thank you Zoo! Smile (Swaps with slices of ripe canteloupe and papaya.)

I watched that prog too - it was indeed very interesting - I think everyone will be freezing their brown bread from now on and there will be a rush on toaster purchases!

OP posts:
HillsBesideTheSea · 09/06/2018 18:35

zoo eggs, cold meat, cheese , butter = omlette

HillsBesideTheSea · 09/06/2018 18:36

SC Confused???

although burnt toast contain carcinogenic componds so the toaster thing might go out the window at the next program that looks at cooking methods

foxessocks · 09/06/2018 20:02

I think I'll have to catch up with this programme you're all talking about, sounds right up my street!

We have just hosted a pizza night here, dh does all the cooking for it as he makes a great pizza , I did all the cleaning up. Just close friends and some have small children too which means it is only 8pm and everyone has already left to get little people to bed Grin we've got our dc in bed already so I'm having Brew and chocolate now Smile

I've got to work tomorrow

Cagliostro · 09/06/2018 22:01

I must watch this programme. I ate LCHF in pregnancy due to having GD and while having to be SO strict was hard, I did feel the benefits I must admit.

For now though I need to catch up with handmaids tale before this episode disappears from all4. I don’t feel like concentrating though.

ta da
✅bought a few bits for Caglets
✅got bags to organise baby clothes into for people
✅bit of laundry
✅looked at clubcard site (reminder that the boost value of points decreases on Monday so if you have any, spend them now!)
✅bathed the baby

Been a shit day TBH, I am feeling pretty down. And annoyed at myself because I should be so very happy. I mean I am obviously. Was sitting with the Caglets in the park earlier letting the baby crawl about and suddenly realised that in a month we could be doing this in our own garden! And it is so exciting. But I’m totally worn out and overwhelmed and we haven’t even started yet. I keep telling myself that the next stage will be the bit I start feeling better at, but it’s not happened yet. Like I thought once we’d arranged the viewing I’ll feel ok because then we know it can be ours. Now I’m thinking once we have actually seen it I’ll be fine because I know exactly what we are moving to. But what if I don’t feel any better? What if I keep feeling this useless until we actually move and nothing ever changes? And then I just end up in what can only be described as a pathetic spiral of despair.

I really dislike my brain.

Scoopofchaff · 09/06/2018 22:51

Cag moving is overwhelming so it's totally natural to feel the way you do. Also, anticipation is by far the worst aspect of any big change; once it's actually underway, it may be tiring and stressful, but you are bound to feel better about it because you'll know what's what. Small steps and all of that! Flowers

Hills yes the programme conveniently left out any refs to carcinogenic effects of toasting! It was focused on evidence that suggests cooling then re-heating carbs tends to make them release sugars less quickly ... or some'at ... hence them recommending toasting slices of whole grain bread straight from freezer.

Yum, like the sound of pizza party Foxes!

Horrendously muggy here tonight. Dd's maths tutor cancelled at last min and suggested 9am tomorrow as alternative Confused. Oh joy... .

G'night all!

HillsBesideTheSea · 09/06/2018 22:56

Bread stored in the freezer and then defrosted is drier and not as nice as fresh bread. Bread that has been frozen is one of the reasons why I am glad that I only treat myself to straight out of the oven occassionaly and generally try to avoid it.

LCHF was better for me too cag when I managed to stick to it.

I decided to go for a walk on the hills. I am seriously unfit so have sore jelly legs after doing what my brain considers a pathetic amount but what my body was considering waaay too much. Needless to say my brain is planning to do said walk again later in the week Hmm not sure what my body feels about it. I reckon my body has gone to bed already and is just wishing my brain to get a grip and find some sleep so the body can recover... Blush

Stilllivinginazoo · 10/06/2018 06:29

hillsthe toast doesn't burn.the idea is freezing affects the way we convert the starches to sugars but the toaster reheating it makes the carbohydrate into resistant starch, which is harder to digest thus doesn't cause intense sugar spikes.plus resistant starch is good for our gut bacteria if my fuddled at the best of times brain has got it right

SC are you/have you doing/done the cracker test?!doing mine later with dp(hes coming straight from work to take lil zoo n D's to see the new Jurassic park film then stay for tea thru til lunch tom when he goes back to work)

.y brain s awake,body don't want to be
Lil zoo woke me 539(well actually lettingkit sniff/stamp on my face) as she was "see what time it is.as sun's making living room less than dark(down on sofas with D's again)I can't seem get back to sleep despite body feel like lead/still asleep
Might as well get up and do something useful.....

Stilllivinginazoo · 10/06/2018 06:43

530(I not that precise!)
SC hope gets up for tutoring isn't more torture on your stressed head
My menu plan for your guests today(to get rid or get them helping)
Pots yogurt and windfallen looking apple/gruel --nice and thin consistency

Soup made with no milk/cream.dry sliced cheese bread

Jacket potato with beans n cheese

I would eat all of the above no moaning(,cept gruel,) but as it's not Michelin starworthy I feel would get results whilst free up hours of time prep/cook/washing up.

Cag anticipation causes more fear and anxiety than even the worst reality (crap example.my biggest fear was having to have c sect in childbirth.ended up emergency one with D's.was no where near as bad as I'd feared and opt planned sect with lil zoo)I'm sure there will always be bad days,no one's immune to them, but there are stacks of positives and it's got to be better than situation you are in now.sendin hugs andFlowers

Foxes bugger about work

Stilllivinginazoo · 10/06/2018 06:45

FFS CHEAP BREAD
cheesy bread would be waaay to delicious......

Bowerbird5 · 10/06/2018 07:39

🌺 WOW! 416 posts and only the 10th June!

Goodness I need to catch up.

I was up late yesterday ( late night) and got going only to get an unexpected visitor as I was about to start three important jobs in the garden. We sat out and relaxed but I got nothing done. And he needed the toilet and CHAOS in the house except one room which just had a messy small table and I hadn't vacuumed because I went out to garden. Need to get up now and do those jobs. Then church and I have been invited to a buffet lunch by a mum at church. How lovely is that?
No choir today so more gardening when I get back.
I dreamt I lost my job😧

Cags I gather you still haven't viewed the house. That would be killing me. I would be overwhelmed if I moved and I haven't got kids although a lot of their stuff is still here. I have started sneakily taking it to their houses now. Then they can make the decision and it is out of my house. Teddies are next. Though I do think the boys will throw theirs out😟 so still here just now. Going to try and wash Mr. Bear as he will dry while it is hot.

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 10/06/2018 08:01

Morning all Brew

cag moving is WAY stressful you have my sympathy. I want to see your new house too because i am nosey Grin

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 10/06/2018 08:02

Stilllivinginazoo · 10/06/2018 08:17

Forgot internet banking too

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 10/06/2018 08:21

Oh i need to do a menu plan

And spend less money

What do people on here spend per week on food etc?

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 10/06/2018 08:23

Last week i spent about 120 Shock week before 180 Shock we have had small bbq each of these weeks though and the first was also a birthday so inc cake etc

foxessocks · 10/06/2018 08:56

Ive my budget is £50 for my online shop and then I probably spend an additional £10-£20 a week topping up on milk, bread, fruit sometimes a few other bits too. But obviously my dc are small and only two of them. That also includes a cat and all my cleaning products though.

Cagliostro · 10/06/2018 09:18

We spend up to £100 plus the odd extra milk etc but TBH we also buy food out as well and that adds up a lot on top of that. I really seriously need to get a handle on it. It’s not completely unaffordable (and especially won’t be once we’ve moved as the rent is so much cheaper) but it’s quite ridiculous when I think what that money could buy instead. Yesterday is a prime example, I just felt too overwhelmed to cook (or do anything at all really). And I didn’t even enjoy the meal particularly (the Caglets did so that’s something). I really want to make it more of an occasional thing and enjoy it more.

I am dreadful at meal planning and any joy I once found in cooking has completely fucked off thanks to fussy DS and tiny kitchen/lack of food storage. Theoretically this is one of the things that will vastly improve once we’ve moved as I will have more space - with any luck there will be room for the slow cooker and maybe even the posh heavy (wedding present) food processed to actually stay on the counter and get used more, plus things like a bread bin, and more space to actually chop/mix stuff. And hopefully we will rearrange things to get a bigger fridge freezer which means lots of batch cooking. And in the new location we won’t generally have as much time spent travelling so will in theory have more time to cook and eat. We will also be within 15 mins of a small Tesco and an Asda superstore so much easier access to fresh food. But one of the things I am really stressed about ATM is the idea that actually nothing will change, I’ll still be me after all :(

Oh well. In 24 hours we will be just meeting a friend who is watching the older two for us so we can see the house. Fingers crossed at least some things will feel better then.

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 10/06/2018 09:51

I think we should be able to get to 100 at max

Dd has school dinners and dp sorts himself out at work

A lot of the time dp and i eat seperately to the dc in the evenings and i think if we stopped this we could save money

Cereal is a big expense here i think. I may try some supermarket versions.
