Keep on getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge!

After a thousand posts our homes are beautiful, decluttered places of harmony and relaxation….. or perhaps not?

We’re still trying to recycle, freecycle, sell our unwanted stuff and most of all clear out our houses, garages and sheds.

It’s easy to get involved, literally get rid of one thing a day and report back for support (and sometimes finger wagging if you’ve ‘accidentally’ bought a load of new clutter!)

Please join us and a warm welcome back to

Hello! I have lurked for a while but am now I am going to join in. I am trying to clear off the tiny bit of worktop beside the cooker as there is never enough space to dish up. And I'd also like to clear off the coffee table in the living room...

I have discovered loads of duplicate jars of herbs and spices in the cupboard so I think I need to make a list of what we have and check it before buying yet more. I have no idea what to do with two jars of ground fenugreek!!

Clutterfreeintraining · 29/04/2018 15:00

Thanks, cashew! Just checked and the supermarket I oder my home delivery with sells it...however, the reviews aren’t great and it’s £4.50 for 500g so will have a think about that before giving it a go...as opposed to my usual impulse buy response Grin

Redken24 · 29/04/2018 15:26

A bag of clothes to charity.
Plates back to relatives house.
Bag of clothes to a friend.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 29/04/2018 16:27

Loving reading about everyone's progress!

@PenelopeFlintstone that sounds very relaxing actually.. hmm or I could just be like DH and ignore all my phone calls and messages anyway

Well I listed two dresses on eBay this weekend and DH decluttered the shed so lots more fits in it and the garden looks tidy. Still got a few things like packets of seeds and boxes of spare bathroom tiles in the house - but need to buy plastic storage boxes before they can go in the shed, otherwise the snails eat the cardboard.

We've got work starting on our master bedroom mid May (including new built in wardrobes) so DH will have to have a big wardrobe clearout next weekend (I've already massively pruned mine) as we will have to put most of our clothes in temporary storage.

IHateToCashew · 29/04/2018 16:52

I honestly would consider binning the wardrobe, but it's built in. It's more the stench of the milk from the coffee that's leaked everywhere that's making me want to vomit.

DS had an odd naptime today, and is still asleep now, so I've had a really constructive hour and cleaned upstairs. Two bin liners of junk, a box for charity, and a load of stuff in the recycling bin.

I did buy a new candle to replace the ones I'd chucked. It smells amazing. Now I just need to take a peek in the freezer and see what I can declutter for dinner out of there. I'm trying to resist the pull of the pizza. But I think I might fail there!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 29/04/2018 16:57

Can I join please? Finally getting around to really organising the house 4 years after we've moved in! How embarrassing!

DD is a massive hoarder, incredibly sentimental about every bit of scrap of paper, McDonalds toy, everything and anything. Well today we had a massive clear out of her room and got rid of 2 bin bags of crap as well as listing quite a few items on local Facebook buying and selling page and a couple on eBay.

Gave her room a thorough deep clean including vaxing the carpet and the 'Room of Doom' is no more - looks great!

How we keep it that way is a whole other topic...

IHateToCashew · 29/04/2018 17:45

Pizza ordered. I honestly think DS is broken. He has never slept this long in the day, and this late! But I'm so excited he's actually sleeping I figure I'll leave him alone until I've had dinner.

In the time it took me to write that the pizza showed up. I forget how fast they arrive here.

All this talk of pizza has reminded me of a friends old girlfriend who must've been a master declutterer. She used to order plain pizzas, and use all the crap on the fridge to top it with. Either a genius or an absolute weirdo.

IHateToCashew · 29/04/2018 17:47

And Holly, that's amazing all in one day!

I have no idea how you're supposed to get them to maintain it. I think you just have to accept a certain degree of mess. Unless your DD is in her twenties that is!

LostMyBaubles · 29/04/2018 17:48

Deseet andHolly welcome! And it happens lol

Cashew ive always wanted built in wardrobes!!
Theres space next to my current one and I'd love to do it myself if I had the supplies!

Calming down a little now. Been on my feey most of the day cleaning, scrubbing etc

I sorted through 2 bin bags of clothes for baby.
All clothes upto 3-6 months ive taken out and the white clothes are in the wash (needed to bulk out the rest of the whites)

I wont open any more bags until these current clothes are dried and put away. Was going to say iron but they will be folded until used so no point

Had a few Braxton hicks so feet up now.
Until ive gotta bath the boys in half hour

LostMyBaubles · 29/04/2018 17:50

Cashew that's actually really clever.
Use up bits out of fridge/ freezer but easier way!

Is he coming down with something? Or has he done anything to tire him out? Lots of outdoor play etc?

If i put my younger 2 (3 and 4) to bed they will sleep for hours but then wont sleep at night!

Gibble1 · 29/04/2018 17:53

Well I started today by decluttering my 30’s. Now I’m 40 I’m determined to have a grown up house!
I have cleared my front flower bed. Totally emptied it! Removed a huge rampant rose bush which was spread over the whole front of the house. Also a huge Jasmine which was spread everywhere else. I now have 2 plants left in the bed so need to get something out there this Thursday on my day off.
I have completely filled the giant green wheelie bin and 3 large green bags. Am shattered!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 29/04/2018 18:32

Thanks! It does feel good. It had got to the point where I'd conditioned myself not to look left into her room as I got to the top of the stairs as the state of it distressed me so much!

IHateToCashew · 29/04/2018 18:45

Lost I'm really not sure! Possibly coming down with something. We've had a really quiet day today so he should be tired. I got him up as soon as I'd been to the toilet in peace as a treat and he seems perfectly fine. Beaming and thinks everything is hilarious as usual, I think he's just playing up because DH is away. We're playing on his mat for a bit before attempting bedtime.

I'd really consider built in wardrobes though. We've always had them and it gives you so much more floor space! The only issue in our house is they're in odd spaces in rooms, so it's hard to fit furniture in without blocking one off.

You've done heaps today Grin you deserve to put your feet up! I think that's a good idea to be honest, I do tons of washing in one hit and end up with piles that we never seem to put away properly.

And I always thought she was really savvy with her pizza genius Grin he just thought she was weird.

IHateToCashew · 29/04/2018 18:47

Holly I think you have to. I do that with DH's dumping ground. I only intervene if the room starts to smell. Other than that I just shut the door, it's not me that has to live in the mess.

Namajesty · 29/04/2018 19:15

Today I've decluttered

Leftover pizza Wink
2 window squeegee(?) things
A pair of earrings
A bracelet
A dustpan and brush
Some talc with a nice smell (Avon)

Cider I can sympathise. I had to womansplain to DH just a couple of hours ago that it is better to wipe down his desk and then hoover the floor under it rather than hoover the floor, wipe the desk and then hoover the floor again. He genuinely couldn't see how inconvenient it was. And told me he wouldn't have hoovered it the second time anyway Hmm

Welcome newbies and well done to all the decluttering going on. I think we're all really making an effort, we will be in minimalist lovely homes before we know it Grin

Eesha · 30/04/2018 00:34

This thread has really saved me. I was feeling low about a recent breakup but somehow this whole decluttering thing has snapped me out of it and I’m feeling a whole lot better. Thank you all, and brilliant progress has been made!! My home is feeling more like a home now.

namastayinbed · 30/04/2018 06:58

My eBay search history is ruined thanks to this thread Shock

IHateToCashew · 30/04/2018 07:30

Oh Eesha. I think sometimes decluttering and being physically busy really helps keep your mind off of things. This threads really helped keep me going too while DH has been away.

Probably not going to do much today. Still planning on ripping out the front garden tomorrow.

ememem84 · 30/04/2018 07:39

Took some plates back to DMs house.

Have ended up with a friends microwave (she’s moving to Luxembourg in 4 weeks so can’t take it with her) and also some cat food, bowls, litter etc from dsis who took her cat back to the shelter as they weren’t compatible.

It will all be used though so not too worried.

Decluttered another box of tissues (thanks ds giving me your cold!)

StealthNinjaMum · 30/04/2018 07:51

Hi Eesha I had a bit of a tantrum around Christmas time, very pissed off with dc / dh and I spent about 3 hours after they'd all gone to bed chucking out their stuff - mainly arts and craft stuff and broken things that had been left lying around. I felt so much better. There is something therapeutic about doing this sort of stuff.

Today dh is working from home which I am annoyed about. I won't be able to mumsnet as I tend to use his computer. Anyway I am intending to sell / giveaway a few diy bits from the utility room and file papers in the Room of Doom again. Having dh home is usually a good thing as I end up doing lots of work on the house rather than mums netting all day or having coffee with friends.

I have also been inspired by your garden tales. I am going to get rid of a load of leaves and pull up some weeds this week.

Hi everyone! Loving this thread! I'm not sorted by any means but what has helped me as a hoarder is the book The magic of tidying and Spark Joy by Marie Kondo(borrowed from library) Really made sense to me and good tips for clothes folding for drawers (bit anal but makes it fun believe it or not! ) Has anyone else read it and what do you think? Am tackling my bedroom today-clothes sorting.

VerbenaBorensis · 30/04/2018 08:15

Namastayinbed-why? I don't get what u mean or am I being dense?? Tell me if I am-don't mind!

StealthNinjaMum · 30/04/2018 08:16

verbena I think she's been looking up used knickers and strippers shoes!

OP posts:
StealthNinjaMum · 30/04/2018 08:18

A couple of pages back we were talking about people with fetishes for buying odd things on eBay such as really old shoes.

By the way I haven't tried Kondo although I know the basic principles. Maybe I should borrow it from the library too as I'm trying not to buy anything new.

Thanks Stealth-maked sense now! I read kondo front to back not so much the spark joy one thou-the order that she says to tackle things in made sense to me althou where she describes talking to the house and emptying her handbag and thanking things for what they done for her before chucking them is a bit ott me thinks!
