How much do you spend on flowers per week?

I love fresh flowers and have recently signed up for bloom and wild, I love the surprise. So far the flowers last two weeks, so I have them delivered fortnightly for £18, which in my head is like spending £9 a week on flowers. What do you spend?

Thank you @poddige, HQ were super fast at removing it. Rookie mistake.

" RollTopBath You're not the lady who was on Don't Tell The Bride a few years ago are you? Her husband bought her flowers every Friday too! They got married on a Friday and if I remember correctly he forgot the flowers."

Ohhhhhhhh that makes sense now :D

CheshireSplat · 28/02/2018 07:13

To those who grow their own flowers to cut, what do you find are best? I've just dug a small border in the front garden for precisely this purpose.

SPARKS17 · 28/02/2018 07:19

At the moment £5 every week, pretty much the only reason I pop into Aldi. Having fresh flowers in the house makes me really happy. I work part time so get to see them and enjoy them. When I worked full time and was never home I never bought them as I never got the pleasure of them but I did used to buy cheap carnations when I was at uni they lasted a couple of weeks and they cheered up my tiny prison cell of a room!

PostNotInHaste · 28/02/2018 07:22

I do dahlias, some snapdragons (Royal bride I think it is good for cutting, cosmos and sweet peas. Around the garden I have various roses, Honeysuckle, penstemon, Pinks, self seeded nigella. Japanese anenomes, lavender, dwarf lilac and perennial sweet peas which are handy after the annuals are gone and just get on with growing.

In the winter I have skimmia and viburnum tinus I use for Christmas wreaths and also put some rosemary and bay in them. The viburnum is good for foliage all year round.

Sarah Raven has lots of ideas on her site.

giraffesatthezoo · 28/02/2018 09:15

I remember someone thinking it was really strange I bought myself flowers when I had some in my dorm room at uni- I think they're lovely, and a much better use of a fiver than a magazine that will make me feel bad about myself or a cheap bottle of wine.

That being said, I probably buy supermarket flowers about once a month, spend a bit more when flowers I love are in bloom. Lots of white roses at Christmas, which I'm sure is terrible re: air miles but has become a tradition.

I find it interesting how some things are seen as acceptable ways to spend money, and some aren't. If OP said she spend £9 a week on coffee, or wine, or a takeaway nobody would think it odd. Personally flowers last longer than those things and provide more spread out enjoyment.

Orangecake123 · 28/02/2018 20:08

I love flowers, but at the moment I'm trying to save money. I was very tempted last week by a bunch of gerberas for £2.50, but put them back. The most I've spent would be max £3.50 on single lilies from the florist.

HappydaysArehere · 01/03/2018 10:26

I buy plants as I prefer not to cut flowers. However, people do buy me flowers from time to time. SIL always arrives with a big bunch, daughter at various times etc. When this happens I usually paint them so they tend to have a longer life - daft I know.

Bluelady · 01/03/2018 10:48

Always have fresh flowers, how much they cost depends on the time of year. A fiver's worth of daffs goes a very long way.

creaturefeatures · 01/03/2018 10:54

Not enough to consider it a weekly budget. I'd love to but consider it too expensive (even though I am a high earner it seems a bit too indulgent to me).

I probably buy 2 or 3 lots of flowers during the year, usually because we're having a party. Maybe occasionally for myself. Even then I tend to stick to cheap options like stocks that are £3-6 at most.

bimbobaggins · 01/03/2018 12:22

Nothing really. Only buy them very occasionally when I’m feeling a bit down

carriewintermeadow · 01/03/2018 12:28

Nothing ... can't afford flowers. I occasionally buy daffodils because they're cheap and cheerful.

theunsure · 01/03/2018 12:34

It depends on how flush I am.

At the moment nothing regularly. When our house was on the market we had a couple of vases topped up - but house sold in under a month so that was short lived!
I love fresh flowers though - so ideally Id spend £10-£15 every fortnight, but trying to watch the pennies at the moment.

I'd be delighted with one of the subscriptions, but only if they can guarantee no lillies- I lost a cat to lily poisoning and it was the most horrific thing. We don't let any form of lily in the house now, I got given some recently and I didn't want to offend the giver, but as soon as they went home they were binned.

I have appalling hayfever but fresh flowers have no impact on it - it's tree and grass pollens that get me. Flowers are fine!

Ollivander84 · 01/03/2018 12:43

Very little, I think of them as a treat really. If they're reduced in the supermarket I snap them up! Best was two massive bunches of lilies for £1

caggie09 · 01/03/2018 15:52

I bought some the day after Valentines when they were reduced! Would of been £18 for the bunch but got them for about £4. Only just thrown them out and replaced with £5 Asda onesGrin

JT05 · 01/03/2018 20:04

I love fresh flowers in the house, especially those with scent. I don’t like Chrysanthemums, since reading DH Lawrence’s story ‘The odour of Chrysanthemums ‘ !
On average I spend about £5 a week, but also have several houseplants.

Martyngibson · 01/03/2018 20:13

Happydays - that's a lovely painting.

CheshireSplat · 01/03/2018 23:53

Thanks Haste I'll look those up.

PickAChew · 01/03/2018 23:55

Naff all. I find cut flowers a huge waste.

meandmytinfoilhat · 02/03/2018 00:05

I spend about £7 a week on flowers.

pitterpatterrain · 02/03/2018 09:03

I've signed up to one of the subscriptions - getting it every 2-4 weeks as the flowers really last

I did consider it a ridiculous expense yet compared it to coffee etc and I don't drink. it does improve my mood in a way I really hadn't expected

Have plants yet always manage to kill them off. Need to find something way more sturdy!

Onehellofaride · 02/03/2018 09:52

About £10 a week on average. Usually have some on the hallway, in the kitchen and in DD’s bedroom.

irregularegular · 02/03/2018 10:33

Which subscriptions would people recommend? ( or not...)

myusernamewastakenbyme · 02/03/2018 12:28

I love flowers but cant afford them regularly so i tend to buy nice houseplants when i see them reduced.
