to ask what household crap brings you joy?

In the vein of KonMari and inspired by the £200 bin. I feel the need to know what else I'm missing out finding joy from otherwise boring yet necessary household crap

I don't have the iron station yet but think it would make my heart sing compared to tripping over how my ironing board iron and laundry is currently stored

Now has to read pages 2-6 to glean other ideas.

daftbesom · 02/04/2016 21:12

My new washing machine plays a jaunty tune when it's finished a cycle. Completely unlooked-for and somehow cute.

AlisonWunderland · 02/04/2016 21:16

I love my Tesco Orla Keily shopping bags. I couldn't resist every time a new one came out and have over half a dozen. Just as well cos they get used for more than food shopping
But they are brilliant, sit nice and open in trolley when packing. Things stay where they're packed and don't slide about. Comfy handles that are big enough to carry bag over shoulder.
And they're pretty! and only four quid

my Eglu chicken cube ( and my chickens)

Roussette · 02/04/2016 21:38

fruitlovingmonkey It's the equivalent of this

Ours is not this one because we've had it a long time but the principle is the same

We only have 2 drinking outlets in the house. One through the american fridge and a water tap in the kitchen sink.

Our water is beyond hard... ridiculous. We had it tested by the Water Board and they agreed, smeary on the cup of tea, but they wouldn't do anything so we went for the water softener. Best thing we ever did, I dont really clean anymore (as far as limescale etc)

FinallyFreeFromItAll · 02/04/2016 21:57

I'm going to have to check lakeland out. I'd never really heard of it before.

Oh and re middle aged catnip I'm only 25 and I love all this stuff especially kitchen storage. I've spent many an hour on pinterest looking at kitchen storage. I also love going round the storage isles in shops (buying household things is the only kind of retail therapy that works for me Blush).

IKEA storage ideas are fantastic. I really love going round IKEA - its a good job I live a long way from my nearest store or I'd practically live there.

I'm very boring for a 25yr old. My excuse is I'm a mum but really I think I was like this before DC Blush.

Oh yes yes yes! Maryz

As I load up my supermarket shop in an ikea bag I constantly think "why doesn't everyone do this?"

wowfudge · 02/04/2016 22:10

Simple Human ss kitchen roll dispenser which fixes under a wall cabinet and lets you pull one sheet off the roll at a time.

Pull out towel rail between sink unit and dishwasher - one prong each for tea towel and hand towel.

Lakeland klippets. I must have 60 of them.

wowfudge · 02/04/2016 22:11

Ooh - and magnetic knife rack from IKEA. So good I've already bought one ready for our new house.

DisposableName · 02/04/2016 22:16

Puntastic is there anything in life more pleasing than scraping cake mix, cream, or similar out of a bowl with a silicone spatula? If so I am yet to find it.

And AlisonWonderland you're right, no pouring lip but it does have a flanged (?) edge all the way around which seems to facilitate neat pouring as long as you're careful!

Giant's tweezers like these. Brilliant for clearing plugholes, getting fluff out of the tumble dryer filter etc etc.

Kidnapped · 02/04/2016 22:26

We have hard water here. We were on holiday on Skye recently and OMG the water. I was in the shower constantly. I put shampoo on my hair and the product actually foamed. My hair was all flowing and soft and glossy.

So water softeners are totally worth the money?

candykane25 · 02/04/2016 22:27

Oh great Maryz I have all things Joseph Joseph but haven't yet come up with a recycling solution. I now need that recycling bin. It's perfect.

Lucked · 02/04/2016 22:28

For a moment I thought you meant cleaning electrical sockets Shock

purpleporpoise · 02/04/2016 22:30

Toaster tongs £1.95 from Lakeland. They mean no burnt fingers or digging for smaller items like crumpets. Simple pleasures SmileSmileSmile

Stack boxes also from Lakeland...brilliant for batch cooking and freezing in square blocks

Roussette · 02/04/2016 22:33

Kidnapped for me it is worth the money. I buy salt tablets from Amazon, they just dump it on the doorstep when I need salt. it's serviced every two years, and it makes such a difference.

Takes up little room too, I just shovel in the salt every few weeks and it's soooo worth it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 02/04/2016 22:37

I've been a Lakeland addict for about 20 years (got the habit from my mum). So I've got the Joseph sink caddy, the purple rubber thing for getting lids off jars, the toaster bags, the pineapple corer and numerous other bits. Cross body peg bag from Lakeland is brilliant too.

Also use my collection of blue Ikea bags all the time, laundry, tidying/sorting, taking stuff to charity shops in.

Then there's the cordless Dyson and has anyone mentioned the Vileda squirty mop? No bucket needed, just keep the handle filled with lovely smelling Method floor cleaner and off you go.

Kidnapped · 02/04/2016 22:39

Roussette, you've sold me on it. Gonna do it.

I've just had a look at the limescale build-up inside our kettle. Grim. It was never like that in our old place (where we had lovely soft water). The shower screen is also a disgrace.

FinallyFreeFromItAll · 02/04/2016 22:39

Ikea magnetic jars on Homebase magnetic paint inside cupboard for spices sorted alphabetically*
Shock I didn't even know you could get magnetic paint. I need some. I don't have a clue what for yet but I need it.

Puntastic those saucepans are amazing. I'm trying to justify why I would need them when I'm already in love with my posh stainless steel ones I was gifted last year.

But my cheapest and most beautiful possessions are my many blue Ikea bags. They are used for everything: shopping, storage, laundry, chucking kids' possessions into, keeping stuff in the back of the car, everything.
YY love them - so many uses. My DM has hundreds of the things.

MrsHathaway · 02/04/2016 22:40

Yy ikea bags - mine are used as laundry baskets too, and can therefore live on a shelf in the wardrobe when not in use. Also you can carry them on your shoulder. I can typically carry four dry loads or two wet loads at a time.

Similarly, cloth shopping bag (the sort of A4 size with long handles) for clothes pegs. Hangs in the understairs cupboard, then goes over your shoulder for easy reaching whilst pegging.

Roussette · 02/04/2016 22:44

Kidnapped. It's been totally worth it AFAIC. We're on an ancient water tank because there is no limescale problem, my washing machine is 24 yers old for the same reason!. Make sure you get the right sort of water softener for your family.

Ours is pretty industrial really but it needs zilch maintenance and now the DCs have left home and the bath and shower aren't using mega water on and on with the kids the salt is cheap as chips.

Just bear in mind you can't drink water from all the taps. That took some getting used to.

unlucky83 · 02/04/2016 22:44

Ohhhh - I love Ikea blue blue bags ...I stocked up last time I went. I use one most often for supermarket shopping ...I put all the light but bulky things (cereal boxes, loo roll, bread etc ) in one - rather than needing countless other bags. And I can put it over my shoulder when I carry the shopping in leaving two hands free for heavier things...
What brings me joy is my under stairs cupboard. Hard to describe but the stairs are split - so one short flight one way , a mini landing and another short flight the opposite way. There was a small meter cupboard under the mini landing and hooks in the hall under the stairs. I had it boxed in years ago with a door put on to hide the coats. Then a couple of years ago I took the doors off the small cupboard too and opened the whole thing up. I put carpet down and ample lighting with a switch at the door. Under the landing (so you do have to duck) going under the first set of stairs I have shelves for my power tools and paint etc. then I have a space for scooters etc. I have a shelf above the gas meter that I keep overflow food on (I am terrible for not checking what I have and buying eg buying a big box of cornflakes when I already have two boxes). A shelf above that for things like kites and windbreaks. A shoe rack for not worn often shoes and then the rest of the wall is hooks -with a row at low height for little people /bags. So I can hang up school bags. gym kits and bags for activities and things like brownie hoodies etc.
It wouldn't really be wide enough to have anything on the opposite side as it was so I took off the top layer of plasterboard to make little alcoves in the wood supports. On that side I have some baskets for gloves, scarves, hats, welly racks (I made to fit in the gaps and I can take out to put really dirty wellies on to dry/waiting to clean) and hooks for things like small walking rucksacks/picnic rucksack and umbrellas, a string bag of waterproofs, skipping ropes.... this is a photo of that side (taken for something else - so about as untidy as it gets) and above the door I have a shelf for part rolls of wall paper etc.
I have so much crap in there but I can always find things and get to the meters to read them..or the fuse box if something trips....
