to ask what household crap brings you joy?

In the vein of KonMari and inspired by the £200 bin. I feel the need to know what else I'm missing out finding joy from otherwise boring yet necessary household crap

I don't have the iron station yet but think it would make my heart sing compared to tripping over how my ironing board iron and laundry is currently stored

Lots of lovely stuff on this thread 😍

I'm another one in a teeny London shoebox, so really limited with what I can do household wise - no room for pantries or futility rooms here! My happy house things are

  • makeup storage - I got clear acrylic drawers from Amazon - the Interdesign Clarity range which is modular/stackable but most importantly comes narrower than most other acrylic makeup storage I've seen so fits on top of my narrow drawers squeezed down the otherwise useless space between my shower cubicle and wall (about a shoebox width, just fits narrow colourmatch drawers from Argos perfectly!)
  • also have a set of mini acrylic drawers in purple at my "command centre"! - little area of countertop by my front door, where I have key hooks, magnetic "white"board (it's actually purple with a white pen!), the little drawers, a wooden magazine file for post to go in, a Moroccan bowl for bits and pieces/change etc and between the magazine file and drawers nestle a lists book, note book and my diary. Since I set up the command centre everything is tidier and I feel more organised overall.
  • everything in glass Kilner-style jars in the kitchen- I mean everything, pastas, grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, spices, flours, sugars, cereals, homemade granola etc(!)!! I've been building up my collection for nearly 10 years a few at a time each IKEA visit and now I really do have everything in the Storecupboards, in labelled glass jars, organised by category. It makes my kitchen feel peaceful and I feel like I'm on Instagram when I cook/bake and I line up my ingredients ready :)
  • my laundry organising system- I don't have room for multiple baskets so I have a 2x8 Kallax vertically, and the middle 4 cubes have canvas boxes in for laundry- darks, lights, delicates and towels/flannels. The bottom cubes are for shoes, the top left for handbags and the top right where "in use" clothes get neatly folded to be worn again. Each cube holds a laundry load when full so I whichever one is fullest each morning I put on. (Also have a dog laundry basket for her towels/coats near the door where they're used/taken off, and a kitchen laundry basket under the sink for tea towels/microfibre cloths etc. I may have a laundry categorisation problem).

I think I'm going to have to get that two-tier washing up rack that someone linked to earlier, looks fab.

I just treated myself to this www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B005LVFOFY/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1459757492&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=bamboo+expandable+cutlery+tray&dpPl=1&dpID=414GD2a1bXL&ref=plSrch and am looking forward to re-organising my cutlery drawer when it arrives!

BubsAndMoo · 04/04/2016 09:18

2x8 Kallax? 2x4 Kallax!!

AlisonWunderland · 04/04/2016 09:42

Currently googling the crap out of those Tefal pans.
It's so complicated- the 13 piece set contains different items depending on who sells them and if they are induction friendly or not.
The French package for example, doesn't have saucepan lids!

I may need to create a Spreadsheet.

MaisieDotes · 04/04/2016 09:44

The French ones don't seem to be induction friendly either alison

On the subject of kallax, this 2 x2 unit is bringing me joy. My kitchen is woefully short of storage space so this provides much needed storage in between my kitchen and dining areas. It is also the only bit of the house that is currently tidy!

Ooh, love it being on castors whatsonyourplate

I want to screw some hooks on the side of mine to hang stuff on, but my yet sure what to hang there so haven't done it yet!

MooPointCowsOpinion · 04/04/2016 11:18

After feeling blue because not much brings me joy, DH and I saw a painting yesterday that we both love, and we've bought it.

He also expressed warm fuzzy feelings for the dishwasher, as we had many years without one. I remember feeling the same about our huge American fridge freezer too.

I live in a cheap-n-nasty rental flat. Everything is low-budget and ill-thought-out. It was making me quite despondent, but I've begun to make little changes that make it feel like someone cares about living here. These things make me happy.

Especially the granite chopping board that sits on the sticky-back-plastic-covered worktops. It hides the knife-marks left by previous tenants making me feel that I am chopping on a hygienic surface and it's a little bit of the kitchen-finish I'd really like to have...

2legit2knit · 04/04/2016 14:06

I've just discovered that DS (6) can operate the cordless Dyson. I love it even more!

Sunbeam18 · 04/04/2016 14:14

Bubsandmoo - l think you just made best typo ever in your post: futility rooms!!! Ha ha.

wink1970 · 04/04/2016 14:37

Has anyone mentioned these yet? 'Tupperware' that stores neatly when not in use AND is colour-coded so that even DH puts the right lids on.

decisionsdecisions123 · 04/04/2016 14:48

Kallax for the kitchen?? I love it!

BreakfastLunchPasta · 04/04/2016 15:52

Yay, I've just bought this beautiful compost caddy and a sweet little blue salt cellar/salt pig, as a reward for cleaning out some of the kitchen cupboards :)
I'm currently using any old dirty dish for the compost scraps and a grubby Miffy egg cup for the salt, so I feel these are deserved

Sistersweet · 04/04/2016 16:04

Please can someone tell me why I need a washing up bowl when I've a sink already? I put most things in the dishwasher and everything else gets washed in the sink and then it's cleaned afterwards

nattyknitter · 04/04/2016 16:06

Speaking of Kallax in the kitchen, my previous owners left this behind, made from a 2x2, put on legs with a tiled board put on top with L shaped brackets.

I thought it was a good idea, so kept it as it works for the space, but I have since decorated a completely different colour, so I tarted it up with some tile paint and different colour boxes.

  1. A washing up bowl is softer than a sink, so you're less likely to smash your lead crystal when hand-washing tipsy.
  1. It has a smaller capacity so you don't run as much hot water.
  1. The plastic is a good insulator so the water stays hotter for longer.
  1. You can pour stuff round it eg when someone has left half an inch of tea in a cup.
Sistersweet · 04/04/2016 16:41

Thanks for that, I'm still not convinced as I've never broken anything in the sink and maybe as I've a 1.5 sink it hasn't been a problem to drain stuff away. It's funny, I dint think I've even seen anyone use a bowl in the sink since I was a child

rosieposey · 04/04/2016 16:43

Please can someone advise which Dyson cordless to get? There are 4 that i am looking at ranging from £200 to £400 for the V6 absolute cordless one.

I have never owned a Dyson vacuum cleaner so if anyone could give me an idea of which one i should buy i'd be grateful?

JessieMcJessie · 04/04/2016 16:57

Don't pay 400 for the Absolute, you can get it for 349 or less if you shop around online. We have it because of an extra anti allergy filter and my violent dust mite allergy. If you don't have allergy problems you don't need the Absolute. I don't know about the others.

rosieposey · 04/04/2016 17:08

Thanks for the reply. I am asthmatic and when unpacking boxes and stuff i sneeze and wheeze terribly but i dont think i have a day to day dust mite allergy really as most of the time i am ok provided i take my inhalers . The absolute is supposed to be better at suction i thought than the others but its a bit of a minefield as i can't see which is the best allrounder out of the 4.

SarahLinden · 04/04/2016 17:19

I have found my people!

I'm sat here, giggling away to myself as I'm mentally checking off virtually all the things mentioned that I've already got. From the Lakeland heated dryer to Kitchen Aid to ikea clippet thingys to Bamix whizzers to kitchen trolleys etc etc Grin

I'm seriously addicted to Joseph Joseph but have resisted the washing up bowl do far. Fuck it - life is too short to deny myself a needed thing of beauty.

Can I tempt anyone with the Kuhn Rikon can opener? Bliss!

We were recently given £500 to make changes to our home by Ikea as part of the Live Lagom project. We went for the Algot system and chose the porch....

Before and after photo's attached. Before it was a dumping ground for crap. Now I want to sit in there and stroke the walls. The baskets are amazing. All my cake tins etc are in them so if I get the desire to bake I just grab a basket. So happy with it!

Oow londonrach what is that ? I think I need One

Jojoriley · 04/04/2016 17:54

Oh yes! My people. Can I interest anyone in a silicone pancake warmer?

decisionsdecisions123 · 04/04/2016 20:28

These Dyson cordless that everyone keeps going on about, don't they need emptying an awful lot? The canister looks tiny!
