Humungous thanks to Greymalkin for leading us so professionally and capably through March! Thanks

And thank you in advance to Einstein for covering the first four days of this thread (while I sidle off)!

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

Flylady link here.

Don't let the somewhat sickly and barftastic language of the site put you off: the underlying system is sound!

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework; which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with masses of bumph. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

** And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight - it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t! . Some of us have been on here for years and some of us natter rather a lot – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers are very, very welcome!

Thanks people, forensics have now left and I am free to tidy up. I am having a cup of tea first though as it is a daunting task!!

Hope they sorted it all out for you lucked Thanks

Feeling tired and grumpy! Mostly with DH :o it's a very steep learning curve, this variable-work-hours thing (DH's new job has different shifts as store is open 7-10 every day), and the Easter holidays have ended up being really busy and chaotic. He arranged a family thing on his day off, fair enough, but forgot that (a) we were looking after a neighbour's DC all day and (b) I have a pupil in the evening. He has rearranged it now with much grumbling. Hmm It is very rare for us to be snappy with each other at all but I was pissed off that the actual thought process had apparently been delegated without warning, so this morning has been a bit fraught! PMS is probably implicated but I know I'm right anyway! :o We both need to get better at updating and using the diary and whiteboard though TBF. Blush

Anyway. Today will be a one-tiny-thing-at-a-time type day I think.

Lucked glad the forensics have been round now. It must be a very daunting task and it will take you a while to spot what is missing. Thinking of you.

It is another lovely day here and we have been out this morning to a craft activity at a garden centre (DD managed to weave lunch in as well) and we've been shopping for essentials. Looking forward to another day playing in the garden but really must make an impression on the house today.

See you later!

done
dh and I did loads of gardening, and yesterday too. My cricked neck has much improved, even before I saw physio, although that was bliss (didn't know physios did such wonderful massage)
My lower back seems to be holding out too, the more I lift things I think the stronger it gets, if I just hold my stomach in grin
saw friend for coffee
ds2 went off to see a friend and play football. Unfortunately he wearing ds1's school trousers confused so when he returned they were literally falling down shockbut he didn't seem to care. An ironed pair of trousers for footie - what a waste wink

cooked macaroni cheese
cooked pancakes for afternoon snack

Dh has ordered a taxidermist's Himalyan Mountain Goat for his business shock I won't say more, except that it is 100 years old. It has been banished to the shed, dh says it is a disappointment (for obscure bookselling reasons) but he has been cheered up by vigorous gardening and continuing to plant himalalyan plants like rhododendrons and azaleas.

dd is in a good mood smile Ds1 is still lurking, after an exam at school this morning, he seems extremely cheerful but is still in revision denial.
lucked so sorry about the burglary, hope you can get over that horrible invaded feeling , I think it takes a while to feel safe again
Cali very easy to do, mix up dates, dh and I have a lot of trouble "mindreading" or mishearing each other. i am trying to write things in two places now, so I have a double reminder to remind him. I am v bad at calendars. I think it is just a habit , i keep thinking I have told him when of course I haven't, luckily we aren't usually up to much but then as you say, when there IS something heavy duty clashing it is v overwhelming to feel left in the lurch. Dh has now booked both May bank holidays away, one for business and one for his parents in Germany, I think that will be easy to remember even if scuppers all more advanced bank hol plans!

Hi all!

Apologies - just arrived back from trip which was a change if not a rest - so have not caught up with thread properly but hope everyone ok!

A bit cream crackered and back is crumped from journey, so if you'll forgive me, I'm just going to post links tonight and catch up properly with indiv posts tomorrow.

Humungous thanks to Einstein for running the thread in my absence Thanks

Big waves to all fledglings new and old (and lurking!).

**

Baby-step no 6, for Wed 6 April 2016 is: continuing previous steps and learning about "hot spots".

We are currently in Zone 2 : Kitchen, Back Porch, Laundry Room,Pantry (April 04 – 09)

The detailed cleaning list for more advanced Fledglings (if you are at that stage) for Zone 2 is here here.

[Newcomers: if you want to know how the zones will pan out for April, have a look here here! ]

Wednesday's mission is clearing out the space under the kitchen sink.

Is it just me or are all the missions this week fairly major ones which will take a lot longer than 15 mins? Confused The intention perhaps is that we do as much as we can in that time.

The daily focus for Wednesday is anti-procrastination. Do something that you have been avoiding!

The monthly habit for April making your bed. Personally I like beds to air before they are made but adapt this to suit yourselves!

For a summary of the above, see the flight plan : //www.flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=-120 which should update itself daily.

Newcomers: hope the above makes sense!

Got lots done, figured I would combine getting the house back to normal with decluttering so have a couple of bags for the charity shop and a couple for the dump.

Cleaning tip - If anyone ever needs to remove fingerprinting dust baby wipes do an awesome job. Grin

Surveyor coming in the morning so need to straighten up a few things before then.

Thanks SC it is lovely to be back.

I know you are right Knitting I just find being restricted very frustrating, but dp has had stern words with me about doing silly things that might set my recovery back so I am trying to be a bit more sensible.

Welcome Oneday ☺

I did very little flying as I had some work colleagues over in the morning and different work friends in the afternoon/ evening. It was lovely to catch up even if far too much Cake was eaten.

SpareCrust · 06/04/2016 14:23

Hello all! I cannot tell you how lovely it was to wake up in my own bed this morning with no school run or hosting obligations - sheer bliss - I bloomin' well lurve the holidays!!

Only downside is that dh has had to go straight back to work this morning.

Dd asked permission at breakfast for "a wholehearted flollop day" today Grin. I think she is pretty shattered post all the excitement + travel + having to be on constant best behaviour around relations and friends. It is hard when you are an 'only' and "on show" as the only child among lots of adults poor thing. Difficult combo of having lots of attention paid to you by adults who are trying really hard but aren't really very familiar with dc but who judge and offer lots of opinions at the same time (if that makes sense). Anyway, dd did v well in the circs and definitely deserves a day off today and loads of r and r! The only thing scheduled is making her favourite blood orange jellies later and "persuading" her to have a bath at some point!

I woke at crack of dawn and decided to get up get on on with things (quietly) so have had fairly productive morning although hall is still full of open suitcases from which I have filched dirty -laundry--.

Just taking a break now to catch up:

Mercury Glad to hear you took it a bit easier yesterday and Cake was implicated! It must be very hard to rest when you are looking after a baby plus two other dc (and it's the holidays) but try and go easy on yourself. [Proffers official Flying pass.] There will be time for Flying when you are properly healed Flowers

Knitting glad to hear your neck is less painful. (My back seems to have un-kinked itself overnight thankfully.) But think any pain up around head and shoulders is more intrusive ifyswim. [Shudders at being reminded of May bank holiday logistics.] And sorry to hear about tortuous SEN DeptofEd funding policy docs; sounds awful.

Yes Lucked bloody well done on having the strength to declutter in amidst the chaos caused by those wretched burglers. I hope they haven't stolen anything too precious or of sentimental value and I hope they get caught! Take it steady though as the whole thing must have been a horrible shock.

On a totally different subject: sympathies over your dh and the kitchen. Oldies on here will know that I have similar battles with my dh who "cooks for relaxation" but leaves a trail- of devastation -behind him.

A very warm welcome to OnedayIwillbeorganised! I think others on here follow the Flylady app (and I must overcome my luddite tendencies and have a look at it myself). (As far as I know Wink I think we are all female on here - in fact can't remember if a bloke fledgling has ever joined - but all are welcome. After all, we now have a loose association with a 100 yr old Himalyan mountain goat so you can't get more inclusive than that Grin.

And another warm welcome to HerdofAntilop how are you getting on?

And how are you doing Celeste and hope you are all feeling better now!

Hope your weekend away went well Greymalkin!

Hope rally went well Needastrongone!

Caglio sadly I cannot take Ibuprofen because of stomach issues but managed to down an alternative painkiller last night which did the trick. Hope you are not suffering too much this morning and feel rested after yesterday. Sympathies over dhs and erratic work schedules. It is surprising how much this can adversely impact on a household so I totally 'get' your frustration about it!
see here for some (hopefully inspiring) ideas for dc pencil/pen organisation. Oh and congrats to your dd for being entered for a dance exam! Lastly, hope "official" fibro diagnosis will help you to access any support you need.

Congrats on a productive Tuesday Blue (particularly liked the bit about finding the sausages Grin) Sounds as though your boys are keeping you active and busy!

Waves to Cotswold sounds as though you and your dd are making the most of the holidays and enjoying lots of healthy fresh air pursuits Star

Well done for bruising in such an "organised" fashion Toffee Grin [ouch] although hope most of it has disappeared now!

Big waves to Einstein (hope you are enjoying your trip) Whoknows Ellie Feetheart PA Nicknacks Honu and everyone I've inevitably missed!

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays as much as they possibly can!

Right, need to go and complete my list by hanging up washing, putting cooled dishes in fridge and thinking of ways to use up all our excess Chocolate in healthy recipes (if that is possible)!

Another day of visitors and their dc today. This time it was my uni friends. It was a lovely afternoon if slightly chaotic, but it did involve lots moreCake

My lovely friend washed and dried up for me which I was really grateful for.

Ta da
Living room tidied
Dinner made (for the first time on my own with 3 dc)
Washing up done
Drying up done and put away
Washload put in dryer
White wash in
Ds3 bathed with dds help

I feel shattered. The dc are returning to their usual bedtime routine after lots of late nights so I am going to take advantage of it and have an early night.
