Flylady's fledglings spring clean your nests! March '16

First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzpig Flowers for leading us through the February thread, (you can hung up your duster for a bit now!)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with her marketing and testimonial nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

< crawls into naughty corner, ground down by DS and feeling in desperate need of Wine >

Today was one of those days where DS whined, whinged, threw random strops, didn't nap for long enough, refused dinner and finished the evening off with one of the biggest tantrums he has ever had. I am shattered!!!!

Need - 80s party! How cool! Let me guess what you are wearing... a shell suit? Jacket with massive shoulder pads? Huge frizzed up hair and scary heavy make up? Have fun.

Cag isn't it brilliant when you finally feel as though you have a measure of control over your house and are not being eaten up by it? In these last few weeks I feel like I have achieved so much, especially with decluttering.

Einstein how was your hill adventuring? I hope your DS is suitably deflated and ready for sleep at a better time.

Hi Celeste - hope you have a good evening with your friends.

< waves to Blue, WhoKnows, Fiz, Ellie, Feetheart, Dogs, Toffee, SC, Midlife, WoodenSpoon and everyone else I've missed >

My TaDa list for today:
Managed not to murder my PFB (major achievement)
Fed cats and DS
Hung up wet washing
Dishwasher loaded and on
Folded dry laundry
Prepped ironing for the cleaner
Quick trip to town for FIL's birthday card
Lunch at PILs
Sold a large coffee machine and a filing cabinet on Facebook, both collected too
An hour of gardening: Sweeping winter debris off the lawn and picking more out of all the pebble edgings
Played in garden with DS
Made dinner for DS which he refused
Epic battle with DS over bedtime, but we got there in the end.

It is my turn for a lie in tomorrow and I am seriously looking forward to it.

Cagliostro · 26/03/2016 00:13

Ah yes that is just how it feels Grey! Really seems we are gradually gaining control.

Sorry about the grumpy DC. I get really broody sometimes, but I don't miss that tantrummy stage.

I forgot my sleepy tablet AGAIN so have come back downstairs. King of the Hill on DVD, and Ben and Jerry for company. I'm going to move the laundry on a stage though, as I didn't get round to doing that earlier. Then I might try and continue decluttering my email accounts or all our saved photos. Because obviously these are better options than sleep Hmm

Cagliostro · 26/03/2016 13:13

Oh well I made up for my late night by sleeping in until 12.45 Shock Blush

Having breakfast for lunch now and will get on with the laundry because I was too tired to do it last night.

Although got 3 missed calls (my phone was on silent) from a private number, no message left so feeling a bit anxious now Hmm

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 26/03/2016 13:56

If it is important they will ring back. No point in worrying if they don't, there is nothing you can do to change the situation.

Back off to the hills today. A different hill, one an hour away for fingers crossed the weather is nice over that side. Operation tire child out was not entirely a success Hmm not even close

Cagliostro · 26/03/2016 14:24

True Einstein thank you for talking sense! :)

Hmm, hope a second day of hills will have more of an effect!

Right. Laundry to get on with. Not sure if anything else is going to get done today!

needastrongone · 26/03/2016 16:05

Oh dear, I'm sorry for the tantrums and and broken nights guys. Thank heaven for teenagers.... sort of!

80's night was brilliant thank you, I am a touch delicate today. I wish that I could post pictures, but obviously can't, some of the outfit ideas were brilliant. Adam Ant, Masters of the Universe, Baywatch, shell suits galore Smile A lovely evening, but today I am eating a pile of crap and I am shattered...

I am so not sticking to the bedroom idea, so I'll just crack back on with that next time it comes round.

ta da
Pony.
Dog walked and fed.
Popped to garden centre.
Planted up 5 pots with new plants.
Tidied up the garden a bit.
Tidy up.
Washing x 2.
Vacuum downstairs.
Dishwasher.

Cagliostro · 26/03/2016 16:24

That's the spirit need - I love that with FlyLady we are never behind. Glad you had fun at the party! :)

Laundry underway, I've sorted out some captions on the author's pictures and phoned her about the publisher's email (she doesn't have a computer, hence me typing it, and I'm also acting as a go-between). Can't get going physically today so I've been clearing out my hotmail inbox - there were >10k unread in there when I started! Blush I think I'll put away a load of DVDs later too.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 26/03/2016 17:55

Oh i am not holding my breathe on better sleep pre-teen and still waiting. Not even
sleep meds are helping atm. Too much going on in his head. Also it is desperately trying to snow here. Thankfully it is just icey rain rather than actual snow but OMG the weather! ShockSad

Cagliostro · 26/03/2016 18:26

DD is similarly unable to shut off her brain. She's no longer getting as upset about it (used to be horrendous anxiety and tears every night) and is at least resting, or sitting up writing stories, but she is still very dark under the eyes as she just doesn't get enough sleep.

I've cleared out the last year's worth of emails from one inbox. Several thousand. Blush I moved any worth checking into a separate folder - only 29 of them! Hmm

Greymalkin · 26/03/2016 19:14

Hi everyone, hope you are all enjoying the weekend. The weather here in East Anglia is turning really grotty...

TaDa
Had my lie in (wait for it....) I slept until midday Shock T'was fabulous!
Emptied dishwasher
Made beds
Some more gardening
Folded and put away dry laundry
Chivvied DH to do some DIY:

  • Changed fuse in the washing machine, now seems to be working
  • Hung up a new picture-sculpture
  • Put up a ceramic garden ornament
  • Washed out fire pit
Sold more clutter on Facebook - really chuffed, have made £30 in two days out of 'junk'. But to be honest I'm more thrilled with having got rid of large, bulky items that were an eyesore.

This evening I'm planning on consuming hot chocolate and replying to my penpal letters.

Happy Easter, Fledglings :)

We've had a pretty relaxed day so far. DCs thoroughly enjoyed their egg hunt which I made last night, except for a small soggy-chocolate incident (bath toy wasn't as dry as we thought) Blush :o

Not done much other than laundry and I'm carrying on with my digital declutter!

BlueEyeshadow · 27/03/2016 17:54

Happy Easter everyone! Easter Smile

Fizrim · 27/03/2016 19:54

Pro-pane and pro-pane accessories (King of the Hill Grin)

Happy Easter to all. We are having a lovely day, weather is a bit variable but we made the most of it in the garden this morning with an egg hunt. Have played with DD this afternoon and she is just waiting for Countryfile to finish so she can stop playing Wii U on the handset and get me to play on the TV! Much choc has been eaten and a yummy leg of lamb Easter Smile

The bedroom furniture is coming along very well, much fast than I thought and it looks lovely. Need to do a big clearout before putting all the clothes that I've fattened out of back into them. Much cardboard to tip as well.

Looking forward to a glass of vino tonight, and the weather tomorrow is looking better than they thought as well. Woo hoo for long weekends!

Greymalkin · 27/03/2016 21:32

Right, sp I'm more than a bit drunk... ds is at mil's so dh and i have let our hair down.

cba to do linkies - its a bank holiday tomorrow so I'm giving u all a get out of jail free card. No flying! happy eater to you all, hope you've all had fab weekends

[Staggers wearily on to thread]

Whey hey at prospect of free Flying day particularly as it is a home bleugh Monday!!! Thanks ¨Grey!!

Although, thinking about it, I will have to be cleaning and cooking for guests. Bugger! Grin

First opportunity I've had to come on here and wish everyone a very Happy Easter!
Easter Smile Easter Smile Easter Smile

Hope all fledgings have had a lovely day and plenty of Chocolate

And hope all the sleep-deprived Fledglings and their offspring are taking the opportunity to catch up with a bit of r and r this weekend and that the hour change hasn't thrown a further spanner in to the works!

I hope everyone had a good time but Easter but prep was more onerous than I'd have liked having lost two days to illness. Also had a dreadful day on Friday because the security alert impinged on dd's school, so still recovering from the stress I think! Have just finished cleaning up from dinner now and nattering to visitors and am on my way to bed.

Oh yes, I possibly had the most irreligious Easter ever. Dh and dd went to Mass but I didn't go because I was still feeling a bit feak and weeble and had loads to do. Didn't even manage to watch Urbi et Orbi. Or the boat race! And dh and I have had a mahoosive row and I have gone to sleep in another room! (But we will have to pretend to be ok with one another in the morning because of visitors. ) Oh joy!

Thank heavens the Lenten Wine fast is well and truly at an end!

Cheers everyone!

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 28/03/2016 01:25

Big arguments here today too SC Bloody holidays and high days. Always the same.

Thanks grey

ds is still up will be back later

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 28/03/2016 03:05

Nope still up. Apparently he is going to be up all night. save me He has been banished to his bed to try to sleep after being taken on a tour of the house so he can check everything is off and all the doors are locked. Can anyone say child with things on the brain? I swear I am going to sleep for the entire week he is away at this rate HmmSad

Slimmingcrackers · 28/03/2016 05:27

I'm up too Einstein [still fuming with dh who undermined me in front of dd when she was behaving abysmally ] and the room I am in has a really uncomfortable bed with lots of things piled on half of it

That sounds really difficult with your ds. So sorry that you are bothnot getting shut eye tonight. Would a meditation/calming CD help? (I guess you have tried that.)

Now I am up I might as well go and make some cakes for afternoon tea today I suppose ... .

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 28/03/2016 05:57

ooooo Cakes. Yummy

Greymalkin · 28/03/2016 09:49

< creeps sheepishly back into thread with raging hangover >

Not sure if you have ever had a thread leader who revolts and downs tools / duster / mop etc before, but sorry about that....

SC and Einstein so sorry for you ruined sleep

SC I had to literally give my DH step by step instructions on how to discipline our cheeky DS yesterday so we are consistent. Then I made him follow through so that DS can see that I am not the bad cop. You have my sympathies; I think it must be extra hard when we are the parents who are at home the most with the DC. We have our regular ways of running things and then the 'fun' parent comes in and changes everything and all our hard work unravels before our eyes (or is it just like that here in GreyTowers)?
