First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzpig Flowers for leading us through the February thread, (you can hung up your duster for a bit now!)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with her marketing and testimonial nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

:o at flying pigs and propane quote :o

DH has got an extra day off as he's not on the system yet, and due to Bank Holiday they can't get it sorted for at least 24hrs. So he's on his way home. Would like to spend the day tidying as we've lapsed a bit over the last few days (although I've done some of the huge laundry backlog, bedding etc) - DD is in an utterly foul mood though so not sure how that's going to work. Hmm I'm just about to hand over the laptop so she can focus on typing up her story instead, might calm her down a bit!

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 28/03/2016 16:04

My get up and go has refused to get out of bed today. Hmm

However, I am working through my to do list 15mins at a time.
Hoover through centre of rooms downstairs
1 load of washing on
organise order of projects/chores to be tackled

Just rewarding myself with an hour of knitting before I go tackle more laundry, folding, putting up the ironing board etc etc... Then I will have another hour of knitting. Thankfully ds is more than happy just chilling out today.

Cagliostro · 28/03/2016 16:30

Sounds like a good approach Einstein - hope so anyway as I'm attempting the same! :o Plodding on with the odd little thing and then resting with my puzzle book. :)

Fizrim · 28/03/2016 18:05

I'd like to welcome everybody to the start of the official 'Grey to lead all the threads for the rest of the year' campaign.

Not much here, bit of washing up. Still need to decide on final placement of the wardrobes but the chests of drawers are in and looking lovely. They hold so much more than the old ones, by the time we have thrown out all the unsuitable clothing we will have loads of space and be wondering why we bought all this furniture Grin

I'm thinking of a name change, so will see if I can do that now and post below ...

CotswoldStrife · 28/03/2016 18:08

T'is me again. Vote for Grey to lead all the threads!

Slimmingcrackers · 28/03/2016 18:27

[Leaves thick slices of lemon drizzle and rabbit shaped extra spicy ginger biscuits on naughty corner bar with lashing of extra strong coffee for all to share]

Hear hear to that Cotswold!

Grey we definitely like your thread-leading style! [Hands over paracetemol.]

And, no, it definitely isn't just at GreyTowers where "fun Daddy" comes in and muddies very clear understandings [harrumph] and previously agreed consequences [double harrumph] for certain behaviours [treble harrumph] especially behaviours centering around "only child ishews" [quadruple triumph]

But dh and I have (sort of) resolved our differences today through the mature method of, er ... sulking Grin. We are mumbling at one another again now.

And he was very good and took dd and guests out for the day thus cutting down on the amount of shopping and cooking required by yours truly (although I did still do some cleaning but it was much easier getting on with it alone).

Big waves to one and all!

Slimmingcrackers · 28/03/2016 18:29

Btw, forgot what was said previously about thread-leading and haven't time to search back now as just about to serve up supper, but I am happy to run April thread (and will set it up on 31st) if someone else doesn't mind covering for first 3 (it might be 4) days while I am away? Then I will be back to take over for rest. [Promise!]

needastrongone · 28/03/2016 19:06

Hello, I'm checking back in. Even though I think I have only missed a couple of days. Smile

The Easter break has gotten our routine here out of kilter. Some normality will be restored tomorrow.

Today was quite productive, but the rest of the weekend less so.

DH and me alternate with being bad cop and good cop but generally sing from the same hymn sheet. They know DH grumbles and moans and witters more than I do, but when I blow, then it's serious!

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 28/03/2016 19:30

I can cover for the first few days. Although am away the 5th but I am sure we can sort it between us. Thanks SC

And as for the rest of you Don't you be getting used to get out of flying permissions. What are you women or mice?

Cagliostro · 28/03/2016 19:45

Cor, she's a strict one that Einstein! :o [sits up straight at desk]

Got a bit more washing done and the living room is looking slightly better, few more things in the right place etc. That's about it on my part!

Greymalkin · 28/03/2016 21:19

Evening everyone, can't believe how quickly this month has gone by: we're a quarter of the way into 2016! Thanks to SC and Einstein forsaking up the baton

Utterly rotten weather here today, Storm Kate has ravaged my area - there are power lines down, trees and garden fences blown down and all over the roads and my lovely neat garden is looking shabby again.

A decent amount done today :
Cats fed x2
DH hoovered living room
In-laws brought DS home and stayed for a coffee
Dishwasher
Hand washing up
Made beds
One load of washing done and hung up
Cat litter trays dealt with
Took DS out for a bit to feed the ducks
Sold yet more stuff on Facebook - so pleased to be evicting clutter from the house
Little bits of DIY - replacing doorstops and blind clips
Researched some quotes for house insurance, found some better deals
Researched quotes for car insurance for DH and I
Battled with DS over bath and bed time

Flightplan for Tuesday 29th March

We are still in Zone 5: The Living Room

The next mission is a detailed dusting of the decorative items in your living room Think ornaments, picture frames, lamps etc

Our next baby step is to is to set aside some ‘me time’ and do one of the Pamper Missions

Habit of the month is getting dressed to your shoes. A tad controversial on here, some do, some don’t… (I certainly don't)

Tuesday daily focus is planning : meal planning, activities, look ahead to next week to see what you can do today to help – organize any birthday cards, paperwork etc

I'm not usually a grammar hammer, but I am laughing at 'forsaking' instead of 'for taking' Easter Wink Looks like the easy life is over along with the Bank Holiday Weekend!

Still shifting clothes and possessions around here, feel sneezy with the amount of dust kicking around. The mahoosive ironing pile I always leave lying around probably needs rewashing and not for the first time. DD is back on the calpol (since 1.44am this morning) due to a headache and she is back in our bed tonight (which means I am in hers).

Lining up a tip trip to dispose of more cardboard packaging tomorrow, and DH is hoping to take the old furniture to a charity for them to sell on.

Well, must be almost time for vino, it's a holiday so that's almost the same as a weekend ...

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 28/03/2016 23:12

Paracetamol withdrawl headache Cotswold?

Ds crashed around 9pm, sods law says that I am stupid awake. Chilling out and trying to figure out a new crafting technique. Have put 2nd load of washing into dryer. Should have put another load into washer but cba Blush

Cagliostro · 29/03/2016 01:18

Can't sleep so I have pretty much finished clearing out my Hotmail. 10,000 emails in the trash folder Blush

Haven't finished my Gmail though. For some reason it seems more difficult (I guess because I use that one as my 'serious' email for work etc. And I realised I set up a 3rd account at some point Confused I have no idea when or why! But it will be handy as when I get DS an electronic bus pass I'll need a separate email for it (each card needs a separate email address to register, you can't manage your own and your DCs' cards from one account... seems rather stone age if you ask me Wink)

On another note, why is it that the living room looks barely any tidier? I swear we did a fair bit today Confused

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 29/03/2016 03:50

Gmail = have to click all the boxes and then say delete
hotmail = click the trash can

Deleting in hotmail is just less faff. Gmail is soooo annoying it is just so cluncky and hard work to achieve simple things

Cagliostro · 29/03/2016 10:14

I found Gmail easier generally as Hotmail is now all on one page and kept reloading and uggh. Although when you search in Gmail it also brings up deleted stuff - so I was deleting the same messages repeatedly. WTF.

Still. I am revelling in the joy of having a clear inbox, I'm so proud :o with the Gmail it's more that it's important stuff and I can't get my head around whether it needs to be kept or not IYSWIM.

Only just woke up Blush

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 29/03/2016 11:01

I just like the fact that in hotmail I can get my incoming mail sorted into category folders as it comes in. Gmail seems to have no facility for folders in the same way.

Cagliostro · 29/03/2016 11:34

I know in Gmail you can have 'tabs' - like primary, social and promotions (I've turned it off on mine though) it's under settings/configure inbox. I had no idea Hotmail could do that too.

Hotmail is now completely sorted [polishes halo] - 4 emails but those are order confirmations from yesterday so will keep until items arrive.

Mind you I have mostly just been transferring the problem - anything with attachments I'm just downloading in case I still need them! Blush I've probably got lots of duplicates now! Will sort through that stuff once the emails are done. Stage 2 of Digital Decluttering is sorting the files on the laptop - I have heaps of photos (although still need to attempt to get some off the previous laptop which died) and frequently download home ed resources, save links which I never get round to reading etc...

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 29/03/2016 11:40

Not tabs, which quite frankly is the most arbitary way of sorting things and apparently my important emails from a company are only promotions so I don't get to see them unless I go hunting. In hotmail, you create a folder, transfer the emails from that category/sender into it bar one. The when you go to transfer the last one from each sender you can tell it to put all future emails from that sender into that folder and they get delivered directly there. Eg all my emails from TES go straight into a folder from TES, my science journal emails into another folder, etc etc. Then I can just clear one folder at a time and it makes it a much easier job when I eventually get around to it ie when i have around 3000 unread emails because I cba to deal with it until it gets out of control

Cagliostro · 29/03/2016 12:03

Ohhh I see. That does sound good. I don't actually get many important emails anyway so am personally happy to just filter them as they come in, although perhaps if I end up properly self employed I'll need to do something about that. I found the same with the Gmail tabs, that's why I switched them off after finally working out how - I missed something I'd been waiting for as I'd not even noticed the tabs and it was classed as 'social'.

3000 unread, is that all? :o Blush

As for hard drive, well I've cleared most of my downloads folder... as in, deleted a couple of things and transferred the rest into vaguely relevant places... does that count?! And even that was to postpone making the harder decisions for my Gmail. And actually, you know, getting up and doing some proper housework. Hmm

Sorry everyone for the massive derail. Or should I say e-rail. [gets coat]

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 29/03/2016 12:56

You can turn off primary, social and promotions! Shock Oh now that IS good news

Considers the fact that this is a flying thread. Urm... err... I put a load in the washer.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 29/03/2016 12:57

Urm in one folder.... Blush in one account (have 6 or 7 for various reasons) Blush

Cagliostro · 29/03/2016 13:01

:o

I've put a load in the washer. Haven't actually put the detergent in though.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 29/03/2016 13:04

I am up to 2 loads in washer post posting delay for various parenting reasons. Also done some folding too. 15min thing has been reduced to 5min bursts... progress is progress. Progress IS Progress.
