First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzpig Flowers for leading us through the February thread, (you can hung up your duster for a bit now!)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with her marketing and testimonial nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

Aw sorry you are poorly Toffee :( agree with SC make sure you do rest! How is the job generally now?

feetheart · 22/03/2016 11:39

Signing back in as my thoughts go out to you SC and all in Belgium. As a child in NI in the 70s I have some idea of the devastation that will have been caused.
But, as requested, I'll try and keep to Flying!
Ta Da:

  • All up and out
  • Very entertaining assembly on the Mayans attended
  • Washing in and about to be hung out
  • Washing up
  • S&S bathroom and shower room
  • Bread machine on

To Do:

  • Some work!
  • Defrost soup and salmon for dinner
  • Prune shrub - want to do something every day so it doesn't seem too daunting!
  • Meeting in the park (in the sunshine :)) about combining parkrun and the Mela in the summer

Hello to everyone. I haven't caught up so I hope all is well with you and yours?

Cagliostro · 22/03/2016 11:42

Hi Feet nice to see you :)

I can't seem to drag myself back out of bed! I shouldn't have come back upstairs Blush. I have a little pile of things I should be putting away and then I need to get dressed. YAWN

Slimmingcrackers · 22/03/2016 11:43

Have just read your haiku Grey and had a chuckle, both at that, and at your "stealth pooper" Grin Hope the tidying up isn't too onerous! (Although I know from long experience that solidified icing sugar can be tricky!)

Sympathies at the upheaval caused by visitors Einstein I am currently getting all my bed linen sorted ready for the Easter onslaught.

Knitting think you deserve one of these Halo for travelling out to far flung train stations and yes, that is the problem in a nutshell with all the Brexit arguments; the advantages of staying are v difficult to summarise/communicate. Boris is v v persuasive but I don't personally think he is being 100% accurate in what he is saying .. but that is probably for another thread ... Smile

Waves to Caglio Blue Whoknows Needastrongone Ellie Feetheart HOnu Nicknacks PA and loads more whom I have missed!

And oh yes, I have emptied a bin ... .

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 22/03/2016 11:43

clothes are over rated. fly in pjs it is the new thing Wink

Toffeewhirl · 22/03/2016 11:45

Not ill thankfully, SC, but injured. Couldn't do housework even if I wanted to. Slipped and fell down the stairs on Sunday night. Huge swelling on my backside Blush, so had to hobble round to local minor-injuries unit on Monday morning. No breaks, just severe bruising (haematoma), so I am meant to rest to encourage healing. Went to work yesterday though. It did at least mean my colleagues saw me hobbling - and I couldn't sit down!

Caglio - sorry you have labyrinthitis Sad. Work's ok at the moment, thanks, because boss had a ticking off, so is trying hard to be nice to everyone. It won't last, but is good at present. We are still short-staffed though, so too much for me to get done (hence going into work yesterday, instead of going home as advised).

Slimmingcrackers · 22/03/2016 11:45

Yay! Feetheart we've just crossed posts! Great to "see" you!

Yes, the irony is, after living in London for so many yrs, I remember coming to Bxls and saying to dh "oh it's so nice to be in a safe small city"!

Like the sound of your spring pruning ... .

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 22/03/2016 11:45

SC i think i would collapse in shock if boris was 100% accurate. he is a politician. Wink

Slimmingcrackers · 22/03/2016 11:52

Oh no Toffee Shock that sounds awful! Have you taken some arnica? Glad boss had had ticking off.

And so sorry to hear about the labyrinthitis Caglio my late father had Menieres (which is similar) which was awful. Go steady.

Toffeewhirl · 22/03/2016 12:03

No arnica, SC, but am taking Ibuprofen to reduce the swelling and relieve the pain.

Lovely to have time to catch up on this thread today.

midlifehope · 22/03/2016 13:25

Ah no home blessing yesterday so attempting it today, after noooo sleep and eventful weekend.

Also trying to blitz kitchen - how do you manage / prioritise garden / house? Any ideas!!

One of those days when it all feels knackering!

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 22/03/2016 15:33

I have had the rages today. Proper bad seriously grumpy rages. My lovely sister let me bored her with a few hours with knitting talk. I am feeling much better for it and the rages have dispersed a little. My sister hid her boredom well and has now hit fabulous auntie role with ds. Worries about prep for visitors? Yeah I shouldn't have been. Blush

Cagliostro · 22/03/2016 18:00

Oh no Toffee that sounds awful! Ouch :( I'm glad that you've had a little reprieve from evil boss for a while at least.

Oddly I'm not that fussed by the dizziness as I am so used to being dizzy anyway (I have POTS which means I get very low BP and tachycardia) it's kind of not a big deal in some ways? I managed to get DD to her writing club anyway and do the other things I needed to do in town.

I'm resting now though. I really want to get on with more decluttering but I'm starting to get a bit achy so have to find the right balance. I am really concerned that I don't end up giving up. I am really proud of what we've achieved already, the house looks so different! But there's a long way to go so we mustn't get complacent.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 22/03/2016 18:05

so aim for just 15mins with a timer or just do a 5min hot spot tackle. You don't have to do alot for long. You will keep going it will be ok.

hope you feel better toffee

erm 8midlife8 yeah no idea.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 22/03/2016 18:07

sorry cagliostro that was a bit blunt. Could you take the concept and put a pink and fluffy bow on it to make it nicer pretty please?

Cagliostro · 22/03/2016 18:09

Einstein thank you I am going to do that now. I've still got a little box full of bits that can be put away so I'll do that first and then should manage about ten more minutes. I'll put a wash on as well and get the DCs to put their clothes away.

Midlife no clue here either really. I suspect if I'd already known how to do all that, I wouldn't need this thread :o

Cagliostro · 22/03/2016 18:11

I'd rather emblazon the concept with some kind of anime character or something, I don't like pink and fluffy :o

But definitely the power of 15 mins shall see me through! :)

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 22/03/2016 18:33

Weapon whelding anime character ?

Cagliostro · 22/03/2016 19:01

Sounds like a plan. I could be a clutter-busting Claymore I guess :o

Cagliostro · 22/03/2016 19:03

I haven't really managed 15 minutes though sadly. It's a case of taking a few things upstairs, collapsing on the bed, putting those things away, bringing a few things downstairs, collapsing on the sofa, etc... got more recycling sorted though and another small BRC cleared! :)

Greymalkin · 22/03/2016 20:15

SC - glad you are ok, I've been thinking about you on and off all day

Feet - < excited wing flaps at you!! >

Midlife - I have artificial lawn, so quite low maintenance. However, I would suggest keeping to the Flying principles; divide your garden into 'zones' e.g patio, lawn, flower beds, hedges/trees. Do 15 minutes on one, stop, move onto the next. Re home/garden balance, maybe if you do the 15 minutes in the garden zones, you can squeeze it into your afternoons. Should be easier with the lighter nights coming soon.

Einstein / Cag I now have a mental image of an enraged William Wallace wielding a Dyson in one hand and a mop in the other!

Ouch Toffee - absolutely use the time to get better! Read or watch some films and feel completely justified in doing so!

Flightplan for Wednesday 23rd March

We are continuing in Zone 4: The Boudoir

The next mission in the bedroom is to clear off and clean your bedside table and make it look pretty (fluffy pink bow / Claymore optional)

Our next baby step is to continue building your control journal by working out your afternoon routine

Habit of the month is getting dressed to your shoes. A tad controversial on here, some do, some don’t… (I certainly don't)

Wednesday is Anti-procrastination day - pick a task you have been putting off, roll your sleeves up and JFDI (just f*^@ing do it!!)

Poor toffee, that fall sounds awful.

SC, I am so glad you are safe and ok, today must have been strange, and dreadful and normal and surreal at the same time. Glad your family is ok.

Grey Yep, the equine adventures take a lot of time and money and energy. Luckily, DD does the vast majority of it, he's her pony.

Rages are totally allowed Einstein, entirely allowed in my view.

ta da (working day)
Sweep and mop floor.
Dogs x 2
Pony.
Chicken.
Cook tea.
Clean dogs beds and bedding.
Wipe kitchen surfaces.
Fold and put away washing.
Ironing.
Watch Holby City Grin

needastrongone · 22/03/2016 20:42

Fantastic load of stuff done there, Grey.
