First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzpig Flowers for leading us through the February thread, (you can hung up your duster for a bit now!)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with her marketing and testimonial nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

Evening all,

I'm in my phone app at the mo so will post links in the morning.

DS has been rather tetchy most of the day and wanted to go to bed early. I really hope he isn't getting ill.

Not a huge amount done today:
Dishwasher
X2 wash loads, tumbled, folded, put away
Made beds
Made some fairy cakes with DS messy stressy and doubt it was worth the effort

Going to have an early night, I'm shattered. Will catch up with personals tomorrow, nighty- night

Grin Yes Need I had an issue with some double pointed needles being too long so almost poking myself in the eye or tying myself in knots with them whilst trying to knit so I wanted to get some shorter ones of the same diameter. Unfortunately as they were unknown origin I had no details for them other than what I could get from a needle gauge (previously) and a ruler today. I have shiny new needles so I am a happy knitter, but they are nearly half the length of the other ones so it is no wonder the new ones are nicer to knit with.

Apparently I have visitors tomo so I am going to have to haul ass and magic up tidy and spare beds. It will be nice but cba with the prep effort. So tonight I shall play with the shiny and tomo I shall ban myself from them until after ds' bedtime.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 21/03/2016 21:04

Grey Shock fairy cakes are ALWAYS worth the effort. mostly for the little people There is no wasted effort with cake. It is cake.

Fizrim · 21/03/2016 23:28

Cake is always an appropriate use of time and effort

We will have boxes everywhere for a while yet (weeks, I think) but have cleared a path through the bathroom for DD's midnight toilet trips. The bathroom has a fair bit of the contents of my wardrobe in it right now but short-term pain for long-term gain. The new bedroom furniture will be gorgeous (and so much bigger than the stuff we have now) and I can't wait until it's all done.

Consuming a large glass of vino tonight, and hoping all the dust we've kicked up today doesn't set my asthma off. It's usually only exercise-induced so should be OK.

Cagliostro · 21/03/2016 23:37

Just catching up with the thread, no idea why I managed to spell 'perfectly' wrong in my previous post... oh the irony Blush

Not much achieved today flying wise but decent home ed, laundry, and me-time writing another chapter of my book :o

Cagliostro · 21/03/2016 23:45

Caught up. Now I want cake. [hmmph]

:o

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 22/03/2016 01:27

Flightplan for Tuesday 22nd March

We are continuing in Zone 4: The Boudoir for the week

The second mission in the bedroom is to throw out old and mismatched socks and tights

Our next baby step is to start building your control journal I don’t use Flylady’s system exactly, I have a bullet journal which ‘clicks’ better with me.

Habit of the month is getting dressed to your shoes. A tad controversial on here, some do, some don’t… (I certainly don't)

Tuesday daily focus is planning : meal planning, activities, look ahead to next week to see what you can do today to help – organize any birthday cards, paperwork etc

Morning all,

We had a rather difficult day yesterday and I wasn't feeling jovial enough to post properly... DS was feeling crabby all day, lots of whining and grouching, any activity we tried to do, he just wanted to smash up and destroy! So today once he is at nursery I will be cleaning splattered paint and icing sugar dust off the kitchen table...

Also, DS is a master 'stealth pooper' He will often have a dirty nappy that doesn't smell and he very, very rarely will say if he has pooped. Not surprisingly he can get nappy rash which is then extremely painful for him. He is showing no interest in potty training whatsoever, if anything he is actively resisting it (he is 3.3yrs). I'm not sure what to do with him!! Anyone else have/had reluctant potty trainers? Any words of wisdom?

SC how is DD? at GreyTowers there is very little sympathy (from me) if someone is obviously ill but refusing to take any medicine/see a doctor! Hope she sees sense soon. And what about you? You sound worn out and frazzled - do look after yourself too.

Einstein - you sound a bit brighter, hope things are looking up for you too. I found an old letter from my Mum sent to me whilst I was at uni, and in it she had obviously included some special crochet hooks and needles. In the letter she warns me in the strictest tones not to lose them as they aren't manufactured anymore and 'they don't make them like they used to'. And yes, I have no idea where they are, or if I ever used them Blush Mum will be haunting me I'm sure.

Fiz are you still glugging calpol in your house? Hope your DD is better soon. < Rubs thighs at thoughts of new furniture > How exciting, there's nothing quite like new furniture to lift a room up and give an injection of motivation to keep it looking nice :)

Glad you had a good weekend Ellie. I seem to remember orienteering when I was in the scouts. Good family fun! Are you feeling settled into your new pad?

Needs I definitely agree that you seem to get a huge amount done on your work days! I used to be a very horsey person before DS came along and I well remember the amount of work in looking after them. Bet you can't wait for the better weather to come along: less mud and more time living out?

Cag glad your DC enjoyed spanish. I've said it before, but it sounds as though they are both doing really well since you started home edding. Long may it continue. I love haiku! Especially cat themed:
The food in my bowl
is old: and more to the point
contains no tuna...

Knitting good you can see the positives in a gloomy day < snaffles a page from your book >

Big feathery waves to Blue, WhoKnows, MidLife, Honu, Dogs, Toffee, WoodenSpoon and everyone else my befuddled brain has forgotten.

DS is at nursery today so I am planning on getting A LOT done.

Grey, DS1 was a bit reluctant. We got the Nicky Sharratt (sp?) Pants book from the library, and one day he just said "can I wear pants?" After that he was trained in a week. That was at 3.1.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 22/03/2016 08:17

Gosh, SC, just heard the news from Brussells, how awful Sad

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 22/03/2016 08:48

Hope you are ok SC

Grey ds had to be potty trained twice. Bribery. Stubborness and bribery. Also bicarb and vanish spot carpet/upolstery (?) are your friends. And some kids are never ready because why would they give up the easy life oh yes ds talking about you

Cagliostro · 22/03/2016 08:50

Oh no I hadn't heard and just googled. Thinking of you SC :(

Grey love the haiku!

Not got up yet. Got a plan of what I'd like to do today but doing it is another matter entirely! Not feeling too good. I did find out that one of the DCs' clubs isn't running on Thursday as I'd thought, so have a little extra time.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 22/03/2016 09:07

Grey, my DS was getting on for 3.5 before he was dry.

Slimmingcrackers · 22/03/2016 09:45

Thank you all, we are all fine. Very shocking news though, especially as dh had car trouble yesterday and decided to come back early. He was planning to fly in this morning but just managed to catch the last Eurostar last night. He was lucky. It's very shocking to see the airport that is our local ifyswim all smashed up.

In total lock down here again. (Thankfully it's a teaching day at school - dd at home - but of course we are worried about the teachers who have gone in to work.) The metro stations involved are not that far from us. Highest level of security alert again so we are being told to stay indoors, metro is shut down, buses and trams aren't running, all major roads and tunnels are shut. We are near a major boulevard along which the emergency services are speeding, sirens blazing, helicopters overhead, tanks rolling down the road.

I walked to volunteering this morning (it's not very far) but it was closed so I came home. I couldn't post before because everyone's servers were down - either they shut down the system for security reasons - or it became overwhelmed.

I feel furious at the bastards for causing this chaos. 13 dead at airport. 10 dead so far in metro. How dare they? [anger]

knittingwithnettles · 22/03/2016 09:45

SC hope you are alright, so glad that dd is off school today. Hope your dh is safely somewhere else away from airport Sad

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 22/03/2016 10:09

SC one of the news channels was reporting that mobile and internet services had been shut down for security reasons. Sorry that destruction is so bad. Glad you are safe.

Toffeewhirl · 22/03/2016 10:26

SC - so relieved you are ok, but I'm sorry you're in the midst of it all. Thank goodness your DH came home early and that you have DD with you at home today. I'm not surprised you feel so angry.

Cagliostro · 22/03/2016 10:57

Came back on when I heard just now about the Metro explosion as well. So relieved to hear you are ok SC Thanks

Awful awful awful. Thinking of you.

Slimmingcrackers · 22/03/2016 11:00

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate all your thoughts Thanks

After all the sirens and helicopters etc it is now eerily calm and silent.

Just feel so sad for all of those families. 30 reported dead so far and many injured Sad

Toffeewhirl · 22/03/2016 11:05

Just awful. Sad

Thanks for you and your family too, SC.

Slimmingcrackers · 22/03/2016 11:11

Thanks again!

Please someone post something about Flying. I am too distracted to do any chores - I am trying to keep dd away from the news channels though - and I don't want these hideous incidents to derail the thread.

Smile
Toffeewhirl · 22/03/2016 11:20

Completely understand, SC. Am off sick today, so not doing any Flying. DH has taken DS2 out for the morning (school holidays) and DS1 is still fast asleep.

I did assemble a moth trap earlier. That could count as Flying, couldn't it? Wink

Slimmingcrackers · 22/03/2016 11:21

Moth trap definitely counts Grin

Sorry to hear you are ill though. Don't be tempted to start on the housework just because you are at home: take the time to rest and recuperate x

Cagliostro · 22/03/2016 11:23

A fair request SC :)

I've not done much today. Pretty certain I have labyrinthitis again! But it went away quickly last time anyway so not too bothered (and I have the antihistamines I was prescribed). Frustrating though as I want to build on what we've achieved! I did get a bit of from-the-sofa decluttering done though - a couple of bag-for-lifes worth of rubbish out and some more bits and pieces put away. Early lunch soon then DD has writing club - will be a refreshing change to actually have that hour to relax rather than keeping DS entertained as he can stay home with DH (TBF DS is always really well behaved while DD is at her class, we just quietly play card games or do jigsaws - but still it'll be nice to be able to take my own reading/puzzle books instead!). Need to swing by the library after as I've got some books to take back.

Ooh so exciting we just saw that DD's bird box has a visitor! Think a little bluetit is nesting in there :) :) yay!
