First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzpig Flowers for leading us through the February thread, (you can hung up your duster for a bit now!)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with her marketing and testimonial nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

Chocolate Cake Biscuit Chocolate Cake Biscuit

Flightplan for Monday 21st March

We are now in Zone 4: The Boudoir for the week

The first mission in the bedroom is to spend 15 minutes making a start on clearing out anything from under your bed which doesn’t belong there

Our next baby step is to ask Flylady a question, or spend 5 minutes reading the Q&A section on her website

Habit of the month is getting dressed to your shoes. A tad controversial on here, some do, some don’t… (I certainly don't)

Monday focus is the beloved [snort] home bleugh Essentially spending 10 minutes each on seven key areas of housework

Ds and I are back. Not a pleasant trip under the circumstances, but it is what it is. :(
Chinese has been consumed but I dread to think the colours that were used in the sweet and sour source ShockHmm

Back to reality with a bang tomo. fingers crossed that he sleeps at a reasonable time tonight.

Cagliostro · 20/03/2016 21:06

Thinking of you Einstein I hope you can have a restful evening.

Thanks for the book recommendation SC I'll stick that on the wishlist. I bought an old book yesterday - on holiday we went to a lovely museum, and in the library I found my ideal book - all about board games throughout history :o I wrote the title down and found it on Amazon for 1p :o

We did pretty well today. I definitely ran out of steam though so some things have been shoved back into boxes unsorted. But compared to before it's massively better! More tomorrow, in the morning at least as we're trying a Spanish club in the afternoon.

I'm sitting in bed as DD goes to sleep - she's coughing loads so she's in with me. I've finally started writing my children's story (I promised the author that when I'd finished editing hers, I would stop putting off my own project and get on with it!) - I reckon that counts as renewing my spirit :)

knittingwithnettles · 20/03/2016 21:43

Very successful day tidying and decluttering, as a result of dd's sleepover

Managed to hoover Ds2's room with him
hoover landing
get rid of large sack of papers from the home ed boxes
throw out two pairs of shoes
gear myself up to throw away most of my clothes although I haven't actually done it yet...
envisaging a special sleepover pile of bedding and blow up mattresses which will fit nicely into tv room instead of some other clutter...
did a wash of clothes
another one
made dd hang some out
hoovered sitting room floor and shook out rug
hoovered up popcorn in tv room

dh did simple cooking today

we failed to go to Mass and now you have reminded me it is Palm Sunday, oh dear...still so many years of plaited crosses I do feel I am there in spirit [and embarassingly met the catechism leader at a pagan Quiz night on Friday, so obviously did have time to go to that...Blush)

ds2 is looking very grownup in his new heavy framed glasses. Twins are getting on much better which is nice. Ds1 however had a nasty outburst in the middle of the day when we asked him to do a chore (carrying a mattress upstairs) which escalated fast, exam anxiety overload I fear.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 20/03/2016 22:44

Evening all,

Very little Flying to report (5 loads of washing plus daily routine stuff), but I can tell you an awful lot more about the immune system than I could have on Friday thanks to spending most of the weekend writing an essay about it. DS has had loads of homework too.

Going to switch off the laptop and go to bed now, night all.

Cagliostro · 21/03/2016 09:01

Morning lovely Fledglings :)

I've stalled a bit - very achy this morning so haven't got out of bed yet. DH is downstairs working on a space project with the DCs but he brought me breakfast and passed me some stuff to sort out. I've gone through one bag and next I'm going to grab the huge pile of laundry - when tidying our room we unearthed loads Blush

Slimmingcrackers · 21/03/2016 09:26

Morning [groan]

As suspected, dd appears to have gone down with some sort of achey virus. She is currently huddled on sofa with the furry, with a temp of 39°c, but refuses to take anything for it. I am not feeling too chipper myself (temp up and down) but am OK to stagger about and do something useful.

Overcast dull weather too. I got up at crack of sparrows to let the furry out and he took one disdainful look at the rain and hastily reversed back indoors! Charming! Fortunately, he has a bladder of steel that one Grin

Knitting wow to your v productive Sunday (even more virtuous than going to church I say) Star Halo

Take it steady Caglio! In-bed decluttering sounds just the ticket!

Whoknows congrats on the essay writing!

Glad you are both back safely Einstein!

Right, I can procrastinate no longer ... time to tackle the washing, the home bleugh, the dining room table hots spots blah, bleh, bleugh, meh ... .

[SC slouches off grumpily leaving a large plate of couques suisees (sort of Danish pastries) on the naughty corner counter for everyone to share with pot of scalding hot coffee.]

Have a productive day everyone!

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 21/03/2016 09:35

Ooooo pastries! Yum. Thanks SC

Today has already stalled. I am not convinced I want to get going either. Ds is off school again. And confusingly MN seems to have lost poster names overnight Confused Very odd.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 21/03/2016 09:36

And now I have posted the names are back ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused

Cagliostro · 21/03/2016 09:45

Someone on another thread said the same yesterday, that they couldn't see poster names. I didn't find that myself but the thread titles on Threads I'm On have gone Confused

Sorry about the poorly DCs. DD doesn't seem to be coughing so much this morning but I'm not sure if she should come with me and DS to Spanish.

Must crack on with the laundry.

Cagliostro · 21/03/2016 11:30

Wash is on, got the next lot ready and will tumble dry after. I've sorted out more stuff into appropriate places albeit rather slowly! Should get ready to go out now though. In dire need of a bath Blush

And I just realised I need to phone the doctors.

Slimmingcrackers · 21/03/2016 12:03

Ta da:
animals
thoroughly cleaned stoved top and all kitchen surfaces
cleaned bin
brushed and swept up kitchen floor
cleaned and tidied up each shelf in fridge
washed out and tidied up plastic veg box container
[How one man can create so much mess in one weekend, I do not know. Dh wasn't even here a full two days! Carrot salad dried all over the stove top anyone? Parsley stalks and leaves draped all over the fridge shelves? Butter smeared on fridge handle Confused. Puddles of olive oil on draining board. Rock salt everrrywherrree. Five pairs of shoes (I kid you not) on the sitting room floor. (I suppose I should be grateful it wasn't socks or underpants). Shirts left on the landing, in the hall, on the stairs. Angry Ditto papers and law journals and yards of electric cabling. Yargghhh. All put away and tidied up.
cleared dining room table of packing materials (admittedly I'd made a huge mess there!)
encouraged dd to drink water
hoovered playroom and dining room floor + hall and loo
welcomed and paid dog walker

To do:
s & s
tidy boudoir (it's a pit) and do mission
look at home office and despair
triage yet more clean and dry laundry
more washing?
iron uniform + gym kit
finish letter to aunt and cousin (which didn't get done yesterday)
rubbish and recycling
finish Easter surprise thingies
tidy stuff up that people have dumped on stairs
use up getting-old veggies in some sort of soup or veg bake

Caglio was it use a couple of months back writing haiku's about beavers? [I love being able to type that sentence btw Grin? If so, have a look at Mnset home page!

Also, meant to say, this site good for sewing starter kits : www.buttonbag.co.uk/category.php?id=2

Keep going everyone!

Slimmingcrackers · 21/03/2016 12:12

Oh dear the patient [dd] has regressed and is curled up on the sofa watching Dog with a Blog on the Disney Channel Smile Can't tempt her with any lunch though sadly.

Slimmingcrackers · 21/03/2016 12:13

Caglio that should have read "was it you?"

Fizrim · 21/03/2016 13:03

Afternoon! DD is still mainlining calpol and she had a fab time at her sleepover. Hope all the poorly fledglings improve soon.

We had a LOT of flatpack furniture delivered very early this morning. The place will look lovely when it is all put together although that will take some time. It is bedroom furniture, so far today I have made about £3.50 clearing out old handbags Grin. Trying to kondo the clothing a bit while it is all being moved around. There are so many boxes it's going to take us a while to sort everything out. It is spread over three rooms at the moment!

Not much general flying going on tbh. I can see many trips to the tip to dump all the cardboard in my future. Will also try weighing some clothes in at the cash for clothes places and see what I get (probably just pence) but better than throwing it all away.

Have a good day, back later dives into cardboard again

knittingwithnettles · 21/03/2016 15:19

done
solicitors
Brexit lesson
s & s
and I load of washing
swept floor
plates from ds1's room
hung out one load of washing

todo
remember Badminton for ds!
German lesson
buy some supper Blush

and in my clearup yesterday I discovered ds2's long last free Oyster card (ZIP) FEEL VERY PLEASED - no more of this leaching of money on fares. Should have applied for a new one ages ago, but I just knew it would eventually turn up. Which is the best reason for continually tidying, alas.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 21/03/2016 17:23

ta da
proof read some stuff for ds
craft - this is where I am mostly today.
decide I need an essential Wink trip to the yarn store Grin
weigh some wool
measure some needles (promise i have not lost the plot)
split the left over chinese for ds and me to eat for lunch
phone calls and texts a plenty
crawl into the office looking for something
Back out of the office and mark door with a caution falling stuff sign, and a do not enter without a hard hat sign
trip to shop 2hr round trip away

For some reason today I am very sleepy. Is it bedtime yet?

Slimmingcrackers · 21/03/2016 17:29

I feel as if I am on Mogadon today. Have come to a complete halt.

Cagliostro · 21/03/2016 18:21

Ah yes it was indeed us with the haiku :o DD has poetry club tomorrow actually, she's loving it.

Spanish was great too - DS was really shy in the first half, and wouldn't join in, but when we went to the second half (different teacher) he joined in peringfectly and showed he'd actually been taking it all in despite curling up on my lap.

elliepac · 21/03/2016 18:53

Back in the flying room so to speak. Awesome weekend had which included my first run for months and orienteering with DP and the dc's. Never done it before myself but DP dragged us along and turns out we all really enjoyed it. Did some flying at dp's abode but nothing at mine. However have had a focussed hour or so since i got home tonight.

Ta da:-

Quick tidy around
Hoovered living room
Clothes laid out for tomorrow

To do;-

sc i know i am referring to posts a day or so ago but glad you were feeling a little better. You are right re balance....though at the moment it is fuelled by new house pride. Don't know how long it will lastGrin. Though to be fair this is the first time i have properly lived on my own really so am trying to set good habits. Plus i do have a tendency to have a whirlwind hour and then do sod all the rest of the time.....

needastrongone · 21/03/2016 19:16

Evening.

Sorry to hear about poorly fledglings and mini fledglings.

Sounds like a lovely weekend elliepac. I was an obsessive runner at one stage. Loved it.

Fiz I am at the tip a LOT since I joined this thread Smile

Slimmingcrackers · 21/03/2016 20:26

Goodness everyone has had a very productive start to the week! Well done fledglings!

Rallied myself again this evening after afternoon pause. Rather chuffed because although it felt like I was flogging a very mangy dead horse, I managed to carry on. And proud of my shiny organised fridge. No idea why I am so tired today though.

Second part of ta da:
s & s done
collected together riding clothes from all over house that are too small to pack up done
message recipient done
tidy boudoir (it's a pit) and do mission NOPE
look at home office and despair YES
triage yet more clean and dry laundry done
more washing? NOPE
iron uniform + gym kit *done
finish letter to aunt and cousin (which didn't get done yesterday) done
rubbish and recycling done (took ages)
and wiped down all recycling containers done
finish Easter surprise thingies some done
played with furry one and his toy fox in the garden for 20 mins done
tidy stuff up that people have dumped on stairs done
use up getting-old veggies in some sort of soup or veg bake NOPE
cooked rice done
made tomato and chilli sauce ¨done
tried to get dd to eat some rice a few mouthfuls
counted bags of terreau (can't think of English word!) for gardener tomorrow and texted him done
fed dog done
carried dog down garden and brought him indoors as he was barking at a cat and disturbing the neighbours done
triaged more dried laundry and put away drying racks done
carried random stuff down to basement done

To do:
clothes out for tomorrow
clear up supper dishes
quick dog walk
crash

DD no better. High temp, lethargy, no appetite/nausea. Just found out that there is no school tomorrow though. I don't understand why I did not know this. Hmm Somewhat worrying as I thought I had all important dates on the calendar, heigh ho. No message on the website or on Smartschool communication system either. Very puzzling.

Ellie whirlwind hours are good!! (Classical Flying don't you know Wink) And balance essential I would imagine to avoid burn-out in your stressful profession. Your weekend sounds fab btw!

Brexit lesson sounds interesting Knitting and yay to finding oyster card!

And glad Spanish was a success Caglio

Here's some flagons of Wine Fiz for when you start to build all that flatpack furniture Grin

Needastrongone crikey, you get loads down outside of work!

Happy knitting Einstein!

Big waves to everyone else!

knittingwithnettles · 21/03/2016 20:27

aargh what with the solicitors and firing off letters I forgot the blooming Badminton again...ds2 has a mind like a sieve and always forgets to go unless I remind him..and I too clearly have a mind like a sieve Blush

we tried out the Travelcard and went to a new trainstation this afternoon, combining it with some Tesco shopping. Certainly the most godforsaken destination I have been for a while, even ds2 agreed that our local "tube" is much nicer. And it is SOO cold outside, grey and grim. Still, plenty of exercise and ds made lots of good jokes.

knittingwithnettles · 21/03/2016 20:37

hope you can both lie low tomorrow SC I think you now deserve it. Can you cancel any volunteering, sounds like you should. What a kind Easter auntie - reminds me of how little I do for my poor little nephews and nieces. Love the foxy toy, hope your ddog doesn't meet a real one.

re: Brexit was reading Boris Johnson's reasons for Brexiting thinking in advance he couldn't possibly have any good reasons, and he was actually convincing...those classically trained minds can twist anything. John Major's empassioned plea to stay In was far woollier.

I now have a tremendous desire to lie down on the sofa and watch telly, and NOT do anything useful. hears dh upstairs rebuking ds1 and telling him to do something "worthwhile"and read a book-

needastrongone · 21/03/2016 20:47

SC, I suspect I crack on a bit on working days, given time constraints. Smile

Are you getting DD's virus I wonder?
