First of all, a big thank you to Dogsbum for leading us (for the very first time) through the April thread; fantastic job!

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one!
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t! Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome

Ah, Swan, decluttering isn't quite at that level I'm afraid. Painting is going to be more of a patching up kind of job. Intending to do the woodwork properly though. Sorry to hear about your aggravating day.

Thanks DEM. It's going to be tough, but we'll get there.

Today has been a struggle because everyone is very up and down with the tail end of this bug, and getting ratty with each other. Some progress had been made, but it feels like one step forward and two steps back...

Evening everyone, hope you are all well.

Swan - sounds like things are hard work for you at the moment, really hope you are feeling better soon. And you have bee really busy!

Blue - maybe you and Dogs could join forces and you'll be the DIY Dynamic duo?! I hate sanding, it makes everything filthy. But I do like stripping wall paper... its therapeutic.

WhoKnows - welcome back, hope you had a lovely time away and your tummy settles soon

DEM - how did you get on sorting out your DS's room? I also agree, that I am equally, if not more, productive in PJs and slippers

Big waves and a roar from Dragon to SC, Toffee, Dogs, Linzer, Shannara, Castle, Engles, Madwoman, Ellie and everyone else.

I've had fun thread leading and not put off doing it again (but please not for a few months!)

greymalkin not really busy - just bored with the homework issue - this a safe place to rant on that subject as SC and I will testifyGrin - just wait till you get to that bit of parenting Hmm

Thank you for all your hard work with the links and roundups this month

I've just read a book on Rosamund Lehmann - dear me these bohemians Confused felt quite grateful to live such a boring life. I loved reading Invitation to A Waltz when I was a teenager so it was odd to read all about her life and that she ended up such a sad egotistical old lady.

Ds2 surpassed himself socially by arranging his own playdate at some else's house and taking himself to and from said playdate Shock

DarkEvilMoon · 31/05/2015 14:24

Ds2 really seems to be thriving since you decided to home ed Swan Grin

Today my moto is 'I dont wanna' Also it is blooming freezing atm. Can't get warm but it seems wrong to put heating on to take the edge off the cold. It is all but June WTF is going on with the weather?! still risk of ground frosts over night and chilly days. Warm would be nice!

My first post for May - just a bit late! I have been reading though and have a couple of things to say -

For those of you who have managed to get access to Mymaths if you pm me I can give you pointers to some of the bits my pupils have enjoyed and worked well from.

I have also had success with a dartboard. There's a lot of maths in darts! My son works at a pub where the landlady's young daughter enjoys scoring for darts and she is fantastic now at mental arithmetic. When I teach using one I handicap myself by the pupil not having to score doubles at the beginning or end and this makes it very unlikely that I win!

My greatest success with homework encouragement was when I was teaching in a school. When we got in for the evening I put drinks and snacks on the table and we all did our homework together - and, as a large pile of books for marking trumped whatever my sons were doing we got a good hour of work done early on.

As far as housework is concerned I have learnt how to put a duvet cover on with no swearing
www.facebook.com/InteriorDesignIreland/posts/918440851501179 and I have kondo-ed my books (but still have far too many, but they are no longer scattered all over the house and under chairs and there are five large fruit boxes worth for the bookstall at the village fete).

Have gone grossly over time. See you in June.

DarkEvilMoon · 31/05/2015 19:53

Grey to answer your question - ds' room is still a work in progress. Just had my dad help to fit a storage unit on the wall. It was a two person job as it had to be held whilst marking for screw holes down etc etc. Will need to focus on doing that tomo. Am decisively watching dvds from bed atm Grin
