New thread for Kondo addicts.

Sorry I can't do all the links that were on the top of thread 7.

Hoping to have a "cleaning products and equipment" kondo this weekend - realised I have bits and bobs all over the place!

prettymess · 09/07/2015 12:18

Great boost, hairylegs. I have our landlord coming over to sort out a new boiler being installed. I'm slightly worried but it should only take a small normal clean to get the house in order for that.

NotCitrus · 09/07/2015 20:18

prettymess you can get smaller knock-off Radar keys from various unofficial sites, or at least you could a few years back. Not sure if a locksmith can do it if you show a genuine one.

I've had some days of collapsing as soon as I get home, so have papers, bag contents etc everywhere again. On the plus side, finally had PIP assessment the other day so may be able to stop collecting relevant evidence at some point (most people seem to be getting rejected now, but my advocate thought I had a good case). Chucked out some old toys from dd's room and the wooden train track is now hers, so that should mean enough drawers free in ds's room for all the Lego...

I did manage to spend half a day filing work emails, which means I have gone a whole week without warnings that my inbox is too full! And after 3 weeks, someone has finally collected our old dishwasher.

Anyone started thread 9 yet?!

Can I ask what you've all done with things that are worth a bit of money (nice Boden dress worn once, scatter cushion things in fab condition, handbags etc.)? I feel like I ought to sell them and I've kept a small pile of expensive clothes to try and sell. Have put 3 things on eBay not sure any of them will go. Going to take them to local big toddler group and if I get £3-£5 for a White Company cashmere jumper I'll take it, but I really don't want it all hanging around longer than necessary?

twofingerstoGideon · 10/07/2015 19:42

I'm putting mine on ebay plipplops. I've had no problem getting rid of shed loads of stuff, but when something is worth money, why not sell it? I've decided if it doesn't sell first time around, I won't relist.

I've been kondoing for a couple of weeks now and am amazed how easy it's been to let go of stuff I've hung onto for years, but I've been rather shocked that the words 'sell' or 'recycle' don't seem to crop up in the book! I reckon I've got a couple of hundred quids worth of stuff to ebay, so why just dump it?

prettymess · 10/07/2015 19:55

eBay. I give an awful lot away eg a hard drive a friend really needed, she gave me a bunch of flowers for it Flowers they cheered me up so much.

stiffstink · 11/07/2015 09:50

I have kondoed 6.5lb in 3 weeks, its as if my mind is clearer when I think about food. Plus being hit by "morning" sickness at 5pm every day helps.

I am peeved that my wardrobe will be changing again. Some stuff in it is for when I lose weight, but I won't get into them for at least 12 months. Might have to box it up as it will only annoy me if I have to rustle through my thin clothes to get to maternity clothes!

CycleChic · 11/07/2015 10:00

My guess is that she wants people to do this as quickly as possibly- and that means NOT hanging onto joyless possessions so you can sell them "someday" or "when you get around to it".

I'm also reminded of what FlyLady said when confronted with a similar situation (she says to bin things a lot and was asked why she didn't encourage people to recycle): "I don't know the rules of recycling in all the areas my readers live and assume that y'all are grown up enough to KNOW how to properly dispose of things as required". (words to that effect anyway)

I think one honest go at Ebay OR Cash Converters OR Gumtree OR a local textile recycling/reselling shop is a good compromise. The ones that just take your stuff and give you money/store credit are particularly in the spirit of "just send joyless possessions on their way" in my opinion.

We're getting the loft insulation redone and flooring at least some of the space up there so I've run out of excuses to get stuff down from there. And since the workers are coming soon, I HAVE to do that before other types of Konodo. Somehow, despite knowing by the time DD was 6 months old that she was our last and only child, somehow we managed to keep ALL her baby things (including the majority of the clothes Shock After going through the lot, I've kept way more than I should have about 1/3 of them for momentos/her children/because I couldn't bear to part with them, boxed half a car boot full 1/3 for the next baby in the family (due at the end of July and his parents are quite chuffed to have the stuff coming), and sorted the other third between a coworker of DH who is having a baby soon and kept a tiny pile to try and sell (like the DKNY baby set someone gave us Hmm). If I don't manage to, a charity shop will be very glad to have them I'm sure!

This has taken a toll on the tidyness of my living space but will be worth it in the long run (when I don't have to deal with the stuff later, because I've dealt with it sooner)

CycleChic · 11/07/2015 10:02

I did think of trying to do a car boot sale but, ultimately, I CBA.

mistymeanour · 11/07/2015 11:47

Car boot sales are a huge amount of effort for little reward IME. You have to borrow/buy a big foldable table, sort stuff into boxes, think about price etc fill up the car, have a very long day trying to sell and are at the mercy of the weather. My DH did one recently (he refused to just get rid of my clearout). It cost £25 for the pitch and he sold £65 of stuff and gave boxes and boxes of stuff away to other traders/ anyone who wanted it at the end and we still had to take a lot to the charity shop.

All in all not worth the effort for £40. We could easily have got that and more for even 1 of the unused electrical items on ebay and some of the kids toys such as desirable lego sets and a box of books and dvd's to music magpie or the like. Keeping a few saleable high ticket items for ebay and quickly getting rid of the rest to charity is definetly the way to go.

twofingerstoGideon · 11/07/2015 16:22

I agree that car boot sales are a waste of effort. I'd rather give the stuff away than stand outside all day while people offer ridiculous amounts of money for good stuff.

I'm doing a combo of dump/recycling for the worst stuff, charity shop for the good stuff and a few bits of clothing/bags on ebay, but only if I know they'll sell. I've got rid of about 50% of the stuff in my bedroom so far and still going. It feels good. :)

afink · 11/07/2015 20:51

Shredded a load of paperwork today. Frustrating as it was a lot of papers, but crammed into a small flat-ish box, so hasn't made much difference to space. Plus the shredder kept jamming and needing paper poking out of it with a knife, which really pissed me off (PMT).

prettymess · 11/07/2015 22:07

I got rid of two more books. I copied some crochet patterns from one and have decided knitting is not for me.

Our shredder is like that, afink. It keeps overheating too.

caitybabes · 12/07/2015 08:07

Hello, first time posting, long time reader. For those having shredder issues, a good tip I read on the money saving expert forum is to spray a piece of paper in WD40 and then shred it, helps oil the blades and keep things moving.
Kondoed my fabric stash yesterday, amazed at how little was actually joyful. What's the point in keeping 'useful' fabric of I'm not actually that keen on it? Have kept about one third of the original amount. Need to work out how to store it now as the big holdall bag it was in is a bit silly looking now. Might kondo the wool stash before I decide on storage though.

Somebody start thread 9 please, only 10 more posts left on this thread!

Cait :)

RL has thrown me a truck-load of lemons, so I'm busy trying to make cheer-up lemonade! Sad

CaptainHolt · 12/07/2015 09:57

I've had a huge pile of carboot stuff which I am going to kondo into the charity shop on my day off. Just having made the decision brings me joy.

FunnyHowThingsWorkOut · 12/07/2015 15:27

Hello all, I have been on previous threads and read the book. Totally life changing but have not stuck rigidly to her method as no energy. Even the things I did were massively helpful though.

So. Am jumping back on the thread now and am focusing on the principles 'does it spark joy?' and 'where do these things live?' as my guides.
