I will start reading the thread later, but just wanted to say have just got my book and am feeling EXCITED! A week off work next week and hoping to to clothes and books. Eek!

prettymess · 27/06/2015 13:45

Returned a ladyshave to a shop as it didnt work properly: just over £30 refund. Glad I saved the receipt!

While I was up in the loft to get the receipt, I got the beach bag I never use for DD because she needs a PE bag and it's perfect for that. And I got the fan as it's actually quite hot!

All a two minute job as I knew where it all was.

I cleared out the shed too while I got the garden chairs out of there.

BrandNewIggi · 27/06/2015 15:15

Got a bag off to a charity shop today, feels good to get it out of house. I now have a bag permanently waiting - makes me much more likely to put stuff in it than a vague "must give that away" sort of thing.

Hubb · 27/06/2015 21:32

Iqueen that's a good idea I think I will get DS involved now and start thinking of them as "his" toys rather than my old junk that I don't know what to do with.

Also there's plenty of space in his room so they can go in there and move from the cardboard box of crap in the front room.

I am at the point where I have got rid of most of the stuff I can, and now got to focus on sorting the stuff I'm keeping and organising it nicely :)

Also doing a big push on ebay, had put it off for months and months but finally sold my first item and got some more listed at the moment.

BrandNewIggi · 28/06/2015 13:16

I threw an entire bin bag out yesterday fool of odds and ends of bathroom stuff, shampoo with tiny bits at the bottom, fake tan I will never use again, endless finished razors... am enjoying going into the bathroom just to look at the neatness of it all!

JKSLtd · 28/06/2015 17:04

Wish I could say I'm near the end but not really.

Have just tackled cleaning products - they live in three places and I can't see how to get them all into one home but have separated them into laundry/main cleaning/random other bits.

Have binned loads though, anything nearly empty that I have another one of. And some old bubble toys as we have loads.

And kondoed the cobwebs Grin

Need to tackle the spare room starting tomorrow if ds1 is ever going to move in there.

wellies · 28/06/2015 22:14

Hello.
I've been recommended this thread so am just place marking for reading on my next day off :)

LilRedWG · 29/06/2015 13:09

My house is really getting me down atm. What with one things and another it's got in a real state. Crap everywhere and nowhere to store it. Has anyone else been in this state and sorted it out?

(sorry for posting in two places - got the wrong thread first time)

CycleChic · 29/06/2015 13:25

That one-touch rule sounds brilliant, JimmyCorkhill! I wonder if I could get DH on board with it? Hmm

I've not gotten very far in the "Miscelaneous" Catagory, but ho-hum. Tried to do CDs and DVDs. Got as far as moving out the pile of lego/empty lego boxes, puzzles, and games that lived in front of our main DVD/CD storage area and prevented us from actually watching/listening to any of the things. Got rid of a few that I bought, but the majority belongs to/was purchased by DH who, despite putting it all on Google Play, is reluctant to even look at it...

At least DD has now comendeered that corner for her beanbag chair, so it won't be a dumping ground again for the next couple weeks, after which she'll get bored of having her own corner in the lounge and we'll start piling things there again As an added Hmm bonus: several of the boxes have moved to a very visible corner in my bedroom, which means that they will hopefully be sorted!

Ugh, feeling ever so slightly overwhelmed, and Confused as to what to do next. Off the top of my head, I've got to do: candles, dishes, washed out plastic tubs we use for leftovers tupperware etc, food, my craft supplies, my half-finished projects Blush, cycling stuff, tools aye right, himself will let me get rid of ANY of the 5-6 screwdriver sets, because "we might need it oneday! kitchen linens (teatowels, coasters, placemats, that sort of thing), hats/scarves/gloves, and stamps/envelopes/etc (I think Mari Konodo calls these household supplies?) Plus whatever else is required.

Any advice on what to do next?

CycleChic · 29/06/2015 13:30

Oh, YES, I've been there, LilredWG often
My best advice: do your bedroom to be a lovely, restful haven, then move on to other living spaces. I know it's not exactly the "rule" of the KonMari method, but I found it helpful to have a bedroom I never wanted to leave. Plus, it sorta fits in, since you do clothes, then books, then papers, most of which (for me at least) mostly cluttered up my room. I then found it easy to dump the Komono into a bag in the corner, making the room LOOK tidier, even if it was just hiding the mess.

LilRedWG · 29/06/2015 14:12

Errrrr, what's komono?

(Being thick, not bought the book yet, emoticon)

JimmyCorkhill · 29/06/2015 14:26

Komono is random crap that doesn't fit into any of the other categories. It usually lives on top of the microwave/in bedside cabinets/'junk' drawers... Grin

Feeling on a roll. I have been trying to sort our house for about 3 years now and I seem to get waves of enthusiasm. DH is being enthusiastic too which is a massive help.

LilRedWG · 29/06/2015 15:10

Most of my house feels like komono atm. Sad

twofingerstoGideon · 29/06/2015 17:25

Did all my clothes today. I estimate I got rid of 60-70% of my stuff, including things that had been at the bottom of the laundry basket for about five years!

prettymess · 29/06/2015 18:17

My bedroom has returned to a dumping ground. I'm sorting it out tomorrow. I want that relaxing haven feeling back!

prettymess · 29/06/2015 18:21

And this is my coffee table atm... Sad

Bangingthedrums, I kept every squiggle DD did on paper. DH had to have a word with me at some point and tell me to cull. DD is always drawing now at 14y. She's very talented and doing GCSE art. She went through her piles of drawings from the last two years and threw most of it. "It was good practice" she said "but I've improved a lot now and don't need those anymore!". She also found it slightly embarrassing to see her old drawings.

prettymess · 30/06/2015 07:39

So I suppose she thanked the old drawings for their purpose and is grateful for what they taught her.

NotCitrus · 30/06/2015 08:11

I try to have a couple of my kids' pics up on display and to ditch all the others as soon as the recent pride dies down. Chucked some mmore magazines including ds's first recognisable figure - bit sad about that. Might see if I can photo it.

Now, how many woolly hats for kids is too many? bearing in mind I appear to have 1 summer hat for each child despite having half a dozen at the start of last summer...

CycleChic · 01/07/2015 07:43

Not Citrus, sounds like 6 is the right number for your hat loosing children! Grin
Ive always been a bit hard discerning with DDs art. it comes from having a horder mother who kept everything and valued it all "because one of my babies did it" rather than because she actually liked it. I keep what I find beautiful or marks a specific point in her art or what she is clearly proud of. I bin what appears unheralded in her schoolbag, and what she draws or colours or etc then doesn't seem attached to.
Busy day today with ordinary tidying for a sleepover so not much is going to happen here I'm afraid!

stiffstink · 01/07/2015 08:30

We have got a skip, thinking we had tons of rubbish in the back garden and garage. It turns out that we can't even half fill the thing because we have been kondoing so much already!

I have even rung people and invited them to dispose of their rubbish in it so as not to waste it!We have

educatingarti · 01/07/2015 10:40

Stiffstink - can I come and put stuff in your skip? Grin

Messymomma · 01/07/2015 16:33

I've just discovered Konmari. I was about to tackle the massive decluttering of our dreadful house and was on YouTube looking for some upbeat music to tidy to and the audio book of the Magic of Tidying was at the top of the list. It sounded interesting so I started listening to it while I was washing up.

I woke up this morning feeling quite inspired but have done as she says and have listened to the whole thing before I made a start. Then I thought 'I bet Mumsnet are doing this' and came and found this thread.

Our house is terrible. It's massively cluttered, filthy and in a dreadful state of repair. Do you think that her approach will help me tackle it? I have a husband who works away the majority of the time, a son in his 20's who is either working or at his girlfriend's, an elderly MIL who does no housework at all but expects her meals cooked and 4 fairly elderly cats.

The mess is mostly down to me, I'm dreadfully untidy and I was in an accident about a year ago and unable to walk for a while which meant things started to slide. Since then I've been quite depressed and to be honest the state of the house was the last thing I cared about. I'm now coming out the other side and it is bothering me that I can't have people round as it's got so bad.

BrandNewIggi · 01/07/2015 20:48

The short answer to all your questions is...yes! Start with your clothes and create one wee oasis of calm in your home, that will give you pleasure every day.
