Just flying through because we are off out in a second but really wanted to share this as I'm quite pleased with myself.

I own an insane amout of nail varnish which sits on the top of tiny drawer boxes on the back of my desk. It is difficult to find the one you want and they are constantly getting knocked off. Ages ago someone gave me a display rack for them but it only took 70 bottles (!!??!) so it never got used.

I found it again when I was sorting clothes and have gone through all my polishes and discarded anything that wasn't total love and now I have fewer than 70 and can use it. GrinGrin

CycleChic · 04/07/2015 13:14

ohh congrats MessyMomma! I love it when things like that happen!

Starface · 04/07/2015 15:26

Yeh it's interesting iqueen. I do wonder about the reality of "tidying forever". Whilst somethings are a permanent change, eg the folding, and whilst I do seem better at getting rid/moving on more promptly, I suspect there will be things that fall out of use, and won't be binned until the spotlight falls on them. So I suspect I will need periodic decluttering. However, it will be far easier ia.

mathsmo · 05/07/2015 18:33

Messymomma so the house provided the exact storage you needed? That's exactly what MK says will happen. Brilliant!

Err... hang on, you have how many nail varnishes?! I too have fewer than 70. About 5 to be exact. Haha.

mathsmo · 05/07/2015 18:45

I haven't started proper kondoing yet. I need to have a full day free without the kids to do my wardrobe first. But I have define my got into the kondo mindset. This weekend I examined what was making the kitchen look cluttered and threw away the compost bin, white board and pen, dish drainer and wire thing that goes in the bottom of the sink. All of which were past their best and definitely not sparking joy. It felt so good. I have bought a replacement dish drainer and it's shiny newness brought joy instantly. All the other items will not be replaced. Kitchen feels lighter already and I've got plenty of other stuff in my sights to be kondo'd. Yeeeee!

prettymess · 05/07/2015 19:16

Replacing things (mindfully!) is definitely good for bringing joy back. KMed our printer and got a new one. This one I can print with from my phone and ipad and the ink is cheaper.

The only nail varnish I now own is a clear one.

afink · 05/07/2015 22:00

I am new and started today with my clothes. I've got rid of absolutely loads, which is brilliant. However, I have a problem: I am about a stone heavier than I feel comfortable at at the moment, and therefore none of my clothes spark joy as they are either too small to wear at the moment or have been bought because they look less crap than the clothes I would like to wear but am too chubby for. If I threw out everything that didn't spark joy I would have not one item of clothing left. Sigh.

prettymess · 06/07/2015 07:07

It's a tricky situation and one I am in myself. I've lost a stone but have clothes that are from when I lost another two a few years ago. The clothes I wear atm are way too big, esp jeans. I walk around uncomfortable as they fall down a lot. I'm too big for size down but no money to buy ones that fit. So I made do. Clothes that are too small are in the loft. I have clothes in suze 16, 18 and 22. There's a gap of size 20!

educatingarti · 06/07/2015 10:10

Back to a more "normal" week after finally kondoing the roots of a wisdom tooth ( required minor dental surgery) No idea how much kondoing I'll get onto as I've a lot of work to do and other things to sort, but I'm feeling inspired by all of you here!

CycleChic · 06/07/2015 10:21

afink do the clothes a size too small spark joy? If not, just get rid and replace when you are that size. pprettymess what about charity shops, boot sales, and Freegle?
Sat saw a car full of junk (insulation, wallpaper offcuts, scrappy pieces of drywall and carpet, etc) to the skip from my loft, in preparation for getting new insulation and flooring as much as we can afford to Smile Today is another day of Konodoing and job hunting for me- wish me luck with both!

twofingerstoGideon · 06/07/2015 11:01

Good luck CycleChic!

educatingarti · 06/07/2015 13:32

good luck from me too!

Messymomma · 07/07/2015 11:32

So, first test. I've done a pile of washing. It's currently in the tumble dryer. Normally I would fold it into a basket to bring upstairs and then fail miserably at getting it into the drawers so would live out of the basket. Will kondoing mean that it all gets put away this time? Join me in half an hour for an exciting update. Grin

I was really proud of myself for culling my nail polish collection. Do you think I still have too many? Blush As a short, fat, plain woman in her early 50's it's my only vanity. I really love painting my nails so for now I'm counting it as sparking joy. They do look nice and tidy on the stand and that makes me happy too.

CycleChic · 07/07/2015 11:54

Oh MessyMomma if it brings you joy it doesn't matter how many others have - you kept the almost 70 that are joyful for you while others only have a couple that are joyful.
Thanks for the luck, girls I'll need it

prettymess · 07/07/2015 13:53

Cyclechic, good luck!

messymama, I find putting clothes away much easier. I've finally got through our mountain of dirty laundry and washing what we wore the day before (esp since it's sweaty weather!). It's an amazing feeling to be on top if it.

prettymess · 07/07/2015 13:56

Sold two items on Ebay for around £100. Will pay for diesel when we're on holiday. I had a little goodbye moment with my Radley handbag. Thanking it for teaching me I am not really that grown up and too alternative for it. I have another that I like more and it's more 'me' and a satchel for every day use.

Messymomma · 07/07/2015 15:04

Yay! Washing all put away. Another load is on. It is definitely so much easier now. I even did my husband's work polo shirts. He's away until Thursday and if I leave them in the basket the cats will nest in them, so while I was in a folding mood I did them too. It didn't take long at all and means he won't need to re-wash them when he gets home.

How's it going CycleChic ?

Well done with your eBay sales prettymess . That's a nice amount of money for your holiday. I'm just going through my handbags now. I don't have any good ones and I hardly use the ones I do have so I might get rid of everything except for my fake Mulberry which I use all the time and a couple of tiny ones for going out.

Handbags are something that spark no joy at all for me. They are purely functional to hold my purse and phone when I don't have pockets. I worry all the time that I'll leave it behind in a restaurant or something too.

Do any of you do the unloading your handbag each night? How does it work for you? I can see it would be useful if you change bags frequently but I'm not sure it's worth it for someone who uses the same bag every day.

plipplops · 07/07/2015 17:09

Hello! I'm new here but finished the book today and have sorted my clothes! Separated about half of them, now trying to decide what to do with the stuff that might actually be worth something (I've got quite a few Boden dresses that just don't fit quite right etc..)

Can I ask how people get on sorting their children's stuff? I think if I asked DDs (6 and 8) what clothes they love they'd be left with maybe 2 outfits each and bin everything else...

prettymess · 07/07/2015 17:13

This is the bag I have.

I unload each night, but put it straight back in my bag. Make sure tissues are stocked up. Sort out receipts.

I'm thinking of buying a rucksack instead. Better for my back.

prettymess · 07/07/2015 17:18

hi plipplops! Welcome! Kids stuff is tricky. I would start with what they've outgrown. Clothes first, books, school stuff, toys and drawings/art/sentimental.

mathsmo · 07/07/2015 19:11

My DD kondo'd her entire wardrobe in about 5 mins today. She just went through each item going "I like that" or "I don't like that". Massive pile to pass on to my friend's younger daughter and nice half empty wardrobe! She's 3. They know instinctively if something sparks joy, don't they?

JKSLtd · 08/07/2015 08:10

Hi all been awol again.

Dh still not well. My well of sympathy and patience has run dry. Ho hum.

Box of girls clothes passed on yesterday.
Textile recycling bag full for Friday collection.
(Including charity event tshirt that I normally would've felt obliged to keep. I did cut bits off this year so that helped with the decision!)

Dc clothes gone through again for summer. Pile of winter stuff to keep in case needs rehoming.

Pil, my sis, her Dh & her two dds arriving this weekend. The two dds/nieces staying for a week on their own for the first time. No pressure to have fun then!!

Spare room needs attention urgently.

Have sometime this morning then out for lunch, then swimming then dinner out too Grin
Tomorrow a half day for two DC and then only another half day in Friday and they're finished! Ds2 had a couple more weeks thankfully.

misscph1973 · 08/07/2015 09:40

Prettymess, it's a Fjällräven bag! I'm Danish, and their backpacks are so iconic in Scandinavia ;) I would love your shoulder bag!

I dropped off 3 bags at the charity shop yesterday, quite pleased with that, but when I got home, I discovered that a pair of joggers had fallen out in the car! I almost went back, but I guess it can go in the next charity bag.

Just realised that I bought DH a book (online) for his birthday tomorrow that I really should have bought on kindle. And it's not really worth it to return it due to weight/postage. He will definitely want it on kindle, as he is almost blind and finds it a struggle to read books, but he read quite well on kindle. Grr at my rubbish shopping abilities!

prettymess · 08/07/2015 11:58

misscph1973, DD has a Kanken rucksack and loves it. I had bought it for myself, but she pinched it! She's had a lot of compliments at school about it. Plus, no one else has the same bag Smile

I got a Radar Key today. It's huge! I'm sticking it on my 'accidents' bag which I carry around with me lately. They're investigating if I have Crohn's disease and hopefully by the end of the month will have a diagnosis. It's made quite an impact on the way I see life, and KM has helped with it a lot.

Hairylegs007 · 08/07/2015 22:18

I haven't been on the thread for ages but wanted to mention that carious estate agents saw my house pre kondo in 2012 and post kondo 2015 and they were so impressed!! Large piles of stuff and huge wardrobes and non-useful crap , all gone! Nice items dressing my house
