New thread for Kondo addicts.

Sorry I can't do all the links that were on the top of thread 7.

I always shop with the buggy or a trolley, so 4 bags for life and a couple small bags suffices. If I get more than half a dozen small bags they get binned (ideally in the supermarket recycling bin, not always) - if I need more, can always get more. MrNC keeps tools etc in the elephant canvas bags which works well.

Had to sleep most of this afternoon and lie down this evening, so no Kondoing and the lounge is a tip. Tomorrow is another day...

thatstoast · 03/05/2015 22:53

I am declaring books done! Much like the clothes I've kept a very small proportion of books. 3 big bags to make their way to charity this week.

Do people sell stuff? I've looked into various book sellers tonight but it seems like a massive faff.

BertieBotts · 03/05/2015 23:58

I have (half) done paperwork tonight.

I now have a pile of stuff to translate to work out if I need it, and a pile of stuff in English to work out if I need.

Oh well. At least I did the easy defo chuck/defo keep stuff!

Re selling, I would say if it's little to no effort to sell, and/or you need the money, then do so. But if it's more likely to sit around in a box for 6 months+ taking up space, donate or chuck it. Remember space in your home is valuable, and the things you've discarded are also there taking up your emotional energy too (to be a bit woo and Kondo-y :)) - the important thing is to get the things OUT as soon as possible.

stiffstink · 04/05/2015 08:08

Aaargh! Another 200 CDs hidden in the loft to deal with!

NotCitrus · 04/05/2015 08:12

Stiffsink - download Music Magpie app and see how much you could sell them for with almost no effort.
I'm tempted - have many obscure albums going for £3 each - but want to rip them first, which means functioning CD player needed.
Today I'm only Kondoing painkillers by seeing what I can take at the same time.

prettymess · 04/05/2015 08:24

I agree, Bertie. I've been giving stuff to charity or friends and family (via open FB posts - first come first serve) instead of selling. I got a babysitter out of it for Thursday!

I'm taking a bag to charity shop tomorrow. There's some rolls of lining paper in my porch for the after school club. Lady who runs it is picking them up when she's passing our house.

Finishing off some areas today. It took me 5 minutes to clean our bedroom!

prettymess · 04/05/2015 09:38

I hate IKEA bags! This one is now empty and more than half its contents are thrown and the rest in the place they should be!

"But, now, the excess Stuff is really annoying me, as I have the urge to clean everywhere!"

Ha ha - genuinely read this initially as "But, now, the excess Staff is really annoying me, as I have the urge to clean everywhere!"

More evidence that Iqueen is really her maj!

(no don't ask me about kondoing because the dog kondoed my homework err.. I mean I've been really busy ...err... runs out of excuses)

Any obvious reason why I should do paper before CDs/DVDs? That's the list order but I'm dreading paper.

BrandNewIggi · 04/05/2015 14:39

I haven't done paperwork Blush It takes up so little room that I can't be arsed. Today I have kondoed the wine rack and am about to go through the holiday booze (I'm sure I've posted before that I was going to do this, but I drank some instead!). I have a space now on the kitchen work tops where the wine rack used to be that is very satisfying. Maybe I should free cycle the spare booze, would anyone be mad enough to drink it??

I think I'll skip paper work for now. DVDs and CDs are the one thing I've been eyeing up. They take up so much space and I can't remember the last time I sat down to watch a DVD.

BertieBotts · 04/05/2015 19:20

I think paperwork is second mainly because it is one most people dread. And it must feel amazing when it's actually done. Plus we don't have emotional significance attached to paperwork like other items. If you're dreading it, definitely do it first and get out of the way! Though if something else would make a more immediate impact perhaps that's okay to do first. Just one Grin

I bet people would take freecycle booze - students for example drink any old rubbish!

thatstoast · 04/05/2015 19:58

Yeah, I did think that if I was avoiding doing to I should probably just get it over with. My main concern at the moment is I haven't got a clue where to put it. I currently have a box file with lots of papers on top of and around the it. It's the perfect system really Grin

BertieBotts · 04/05/2015 20:17

Grin Yes I put mine off until I had bought a folder, although somebody made the excellent point that I should have done it first and then I would know what size folder to buy. But oh well! It worked out okay. WHSmith does a very good upright box file with A-Z markers, I want one of those but I'm not in the UK any more and the one we got off amazon is really flimsy.

thatstoast · 04/05/2015 20:42

I'm looking at that file and thinking no way will it be big enough for all my paper so maybe I should get kondoing.

Although tonight my plans are to eat pizza and look at pinterest.

Are you in the US Bertie? I joined a Kondo facebook page which has loads of American members. They all have so much space! I've seriously seen rooms which are bigger than my house.

Starface · 04/05/2015 21:02

Toast I sell stuff.

It has slowed me down quite a bit and definitely takes it toll in momentum/motivation terms so you need to know yourself if it will bring the whole project to a halt for you or not.

I did webuybooks for books and some cds and dvds. Large items I have used ebay/gumtree/nethuns. I also did 1 boot fair and plan 1 more. I did have quite a bit though and have made about 350, a lot for me. Plus with the bits of furniture it's actually the most efficient way to get rid. A lot of the boot fair stuff I couldn't bear to just chuck so it was the best way to ensure it provided joy for someone else - my prices were v low. Some gumtree was also not sold but free. I have also given a lot to charity shops. A letter from one recently said I made them £50 in the last quarter, and I've been sharing the love. I have also gifted loads to family and friends. Frankly, given I stumbled on these threads thinking "who is marie kondo", the amount of joyless possessions I had was shocking!

CycleChic · 05/05/2015 07:44

Mari Konodo'a motto is declutter first, then put away. So why worry about the second step before you do the first? Something will come to you by the time you reach sentimental things. Meanwhile, a box file with smaller piles on and around it sounds good to me Grin

BertieBotts · 05/05/2015 08:58

No I live in Germany. Sadly space is not abundant! :) But yes American houses are huge.

Iqueen · 05/05/2015 10:26

But yes American houses are huge.

Ugh! More to clean!

Having seen some pics of hoarded US homes - I think I'd just strike a match, chuck it in, and shut the door. Imagine trying to kondo that lot! Shock

As 'Work expands to fill the Time available', Acquisitions expand to fill the Space available'! Hmm

BertieBotts · 05/05/2015 11:52

Yep!

OK I have joined the - frankly terrifying - facebook group (8000 members!) but it's very US focused so I'll repost my question here too.

I am doing paperwork. Do I need to keep and how long?

  • Old tax credit award notices
  • Expired, cancelled passports
  • Tenancy agreement from previous home (I have the statement of on-time rent payments separately)
  • Old payslips, P45s and P60s
  • Contract from my current job which has now expired and been replaced
  • A couple of paid utility bills from the UK to show that at one point I paid bills there. (Well over 6 months old, so useless?)
