LGJ rushes off to get the popcorn, this could be fun. Grin

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2006 16:52

Please tell me you get your veg separately from the greengrocers - I can only see potatoes, a pepper and onions

That's a lot of ready meals, jenk, it's a very expenisive way to eat. Do you not like cooking or do they not like your cooking?

DumbledoresGirl · 10/06/2006 16:52

I am not sure what we are meant to be doing - telling you what you don't need? Suggesting alternatives?

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2006 16:53

Nice to see free range organic eggs on there

SleepyJess · 10/06/2006 16:53

Where is the fruit?

DumbledoresGirl · 10/06/2006 16:54

F and Z - be fair, there is a Caesar salad there too. Wink

PrettyCandles · 10/06/2006 16:54

What do you want us to say? I'm not sure you'll like some of the comments that may result from us seeing this shopping list.

DumbledoresGirl · 10/06/2006 16:55

There are 6 ornages and a bag of apples SJ!

mustrunmore · 10/06/2006 16:55

God! I am officially jealous that anyone would consider spending that amount on such unsubstantial food Shock I hope this doeasn't offend you, but I needed to let it out of my system!! Cant really imagine what meals you have either, once the pie and baked spud one is done, with lots of yoghurt puddings!

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2006 16:55

Jen has said she is being brave and wants us to help her keep her budget down in future. We can think of some suggestions surely?

charliecat · 10/06/2006 16:55

OMG didnt realise you could get so little to eat for just under £100 quidShock
Theres very little there to cook or make, or put with rice/pasta/spuds...

SleepyJess · 10/06/2006 16:56

Ah yes sorry. I thought I saw some the first time.. then looked and looked and couldn't see them again!

LadySherlockofLGJ · 10/06/2006 16:57

Right

Lets be nice.

LGJ glares menacingly.

Carmenere · 10/06/2006 16:59

Well cut out the 36 packs of crisps for a start. Just go to the shop when you want them. they have zero nutritional value and should not be included in food shopping, they should be an occasional treat.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 10/06/2006 17:00

Do you want to give us an idea what sort of meals you are planning (in the loose sense) to cook.

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2006 17:00

Ok I am thinking hard. I would buy fewer ready meals or maybe some that are cheaper and more healthy like pizza (not a bad food once in a while and can go a long way with a big portion of veg).

I would buy lots and lots of veg from the market or greengrocers and bulk up whatever you are having with that. Things like broccoli, carrots, cauli. Nice and cheap and filling and healthy. Add extra veg to whatever you are eating and the food will go a lot further. Big bags of frozen peas and sweetcorn v good also (the supermarket own brand)

I would also get some more fruit in, for the same reasons, and replace at least one of those packets of crisps / biscuity things a day with fruit for whoever is eating them (not you obviously jenk Wink)

I can also see a lot of branded food. Are the supermarket crisps not a lot cheaper? A big pot of supermarket yogurt would be a lot cheaper than all those Muller thingies, too.

Is this helping at all? I hope you haven't run away :)

charliecat · 10/06/2006 17:02

If it was my shopping list, And i feed 4 of us on £40 quid a week...there would be enough crisps to last the week, so at least 10 packets (1 in 2 lunch box each school day) , I buy cake mixes, for something like 36 p and make little cakes to put in the lunch boxes along with AT LEAST 2 pieces of fruit...apple/banana/orange/grapes/strawberrys nowt fancy..
There would be potatoes that I would make into mash/chips/baked spuds/wedges.
Does that help?

PrettyCandles · 10/06/2006 17:02

OK here are a few suggestions:

Instead of chicken roll, roast your own chicken. Less salt, no preservatives and no extra water pumped in together with chemicals to make it hold the water. Takes no time at all to take it out of the wrapper and shove it in the oven on a roasting rack. The washing-up takes longer than the preparation. It costs more to buy but you will get at least 3 meals out of one chicken, especially if you choose the larger ones.

Instead of all those flavoured yogurt deserts, buy plain yogurt and add a teaspoonful of jam. Definitely cheaper than the made ones, and again no additives - just yogurt, fruit, sugar, pectin and maybe citric acid.

Drop the cereal selection pack - mostly sugar and salt again, plus you pay a premium for the small portion packaging. Try 'semi-sweet' cereals, like own-brand versions of Shreddies.

Carmenere · 10/06/2006 17:02

In fact ditto the rest of the snacks and biscuits and cakes. If you have to think about going out to get them you are less likely to casually graze.
£8 is a lot to spend on a curry for 3 people. you could knock up a batch of chicken/lamb or vegetable curry with rice for about £4 and just buy the naan bread if you wanted.

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2006 17:03

Oh good for you on the organic milk too :) If you saved a bit of money by getting your fresh stuff from the market, and getting more fruit instead of so many biscuits, you could probably afford organic cheese as well.

SleepyJess · 10/06/2006 17:04

If you prefer to order in Jenk, you could get an Abel and Cole box of organic veggies and fruit. I am a sad, sad case who gets quite exhilarated imagining what is going to be in mine each fortnight!! Grin (We get a £22 family box every other week.)

Organic stuff tastes much better as well as being better.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 10/06/2006 17:05

The curry and the fish pie and the meat & potato pie - make those yourself for less.

Agree that's a lot of crisps (2ad + 3 teens here and we only have 12 bags)

DumbledoresGirl · 10/06/2006 17:05

Well, personally if I have to be constructive, I would say look up the ingredients to the meals you are buying ready made here and see if you can make them yourself. Eg an Ocean Pie is fish pie isn't it? All you do is make a white sauce, add a tin of tuna of a cooked piece of cod, some cheese, perhaps some peas, or even boiled eggs chopped up and top with mashed potato.

Also, I wouldn't buy those multi packs of cereal. they are so mind bogglingly expensive. Just buy one or two cereals that everyone will eat and maybe buy a different one next week.

I hesitate to criticise things like the cheesestrings as I know how children can go on about these things, and I have been known to buy what I know is rubbish but what I know will at least be eaten. However, they are expensive and should be kept to the minimum.

noddyholder · 10/06/2006 17:05

I think there are too many ready things in there not criticising just that they are very expensive for not much nutrition wise. You don't have much fruit and veg and muller yoghutrs v expensive and sugarry Seems really expensive to me

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2006 17:06

If you were cooking your own stuff instead, you could do at least 10 portions of lentil curry for £8. Cooking from scratch with lots and lots of veg and pulses is super cheap, even if all the stuff is organic.
