It's a lot better!
Myyyy God!

But what's with the chopped pork addiction, lady??
That is weeeeeeird shit,I tell ya.
Buy a cooked hock form the butchers-less than £2 and enough meat on it for four adults i would say.

DumbledoresGirl · 10/06/2006 22:41

Well that is certainly healthier. I am off to bed now and will leave Moondog to annihilate you. Grin

moondog · 10/06/2006 22:42

Also, why do you nedd crumble topping?
It's only butter,flour and sugar.
You can make it yourself in seconds

DumbledoresGirl · 10/06/2006 22:42

See? Grin

moondog · 10/06/2006 22:44

I can't get my head around you going to the extra effort (and paying more) for organic veg and then buying stuff like 'freeze pops' and strawberry sauce.
There is nothing good in those. Sad

I have a ice lolly maker.Just fill it with juice and put in the freezer.
Kids love the fun of waiting until they freeze too.

Prufrock · 10/06/2006 22:45

jenk - I do think your list is terrible - but I also know how difficult it is to have a dh who insists on eating junk (mine will not eat anything green apart from peppers and chillis!)

IMO, and E going straight from thissort of eating to a moondogesque menu would be too much for your family to take, but you can start small.

Buy Kettle chips undressed or vegetable crisps rather than the Walkers crisps - in time you can (if you want move onto making your own crisps - use a potato peeler to slice thin strips of parsnip, uncooked beetroot, carrot and potato and toss in oil and herbs. Get teh kids to lay them out on roasting trays and bung in the oven)

Make Fish Pie - poach cod and salmon, add prawns, carrots and sweetcorn and a white sauce (once you've made it once you'll realise how easy it is - I also add saffron to mine) and then top with mashed potato - make enough for 2 pies and freeze one.

Make burgers- process a red onoion, add some coriadner and cumin and then mince, and form into burgers and then cook in the oven for 30 minutes - significantly tastier than bought

Make curry - even if you just buy a ready made sauce and add your own diced chicken and maybe extra veg it will be cheaper than the ready mades.

Make cookies - toddler can help, and once your dh has tasted \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=9&threadid=175674&stamp=060522142309\these} he will never ask for Sainsbury's version again.

jenk1 · 10/06/2006 22:46

the chopped pork fetish is DS, its the only "meat" he will eat.
Freeze pops, well theyre easy and quick and crumble topping its a start !! Grin

Brilliant Jenk - a huge improvement - you'll all eat well this week!

Just think of small changes every time you shop so that over time you substitute some of the pre-prepared food for freshly cooked. That way, you'll manage to change almost without the family noticing!

You will lose all support for any change if you try to do it all overnight!

It is a vast improvement on the first list - so a HUGE pat on the back from me:):):)

Just shout if you need any help with recipes during the week:)

Fillyjonk · 10/06/2006 22:46

hmmm, that is much better.

now I personally would cut out all the biscuits and ice cream and crap. The strawberry topper thing stands out.

And caesar salad...I don't get it...And the yoghurts

and make mr jenk buy them himself.

but i am very very mean

and i too have a rake thin junk food addict dp. But in front of the kids its lentils and "mmm, lovely, tofu stir fry again.".

Its much much better, jenk.

Fillyjonk · 10/06/2006 22:49

theres no chance of getting your dh to cook biscuits? mt dp likes baking, its very...precise...and the kids help, and i get to MN...

ScummyMummy · 10/06/2006 22:50

I think baby steps may be best if you've got a stubborn husband and a boy with food issues. It might be quite stressful going from almost all ready meals to cooking everything from scratch too. Why don't you try changing one thing every week so that you don't feel all overwhelmed? I'd start by banning cheese strings, personally. (I have a massive hatred of cheese strings though!) And next I'd try replacing one of the ready meals with a simple home made pasta dish. Think you were very brave to post your list, btw- I would never dare!

WideWebWitch · 10/06/2006 22:51

Much better, well done! And thanks for posting it. Shall I see if I can find my holiday shopping list thread for your amusement Jenk? Asda nappies are great imo.

moondog · 10/06/2006 22:52

Jenk, know that you have a child with SN however, and that this is an issue,so you are let off on chopped pork front. Grin.
Try him with BBQ ribs.
I do my own (very cheap too)
Everybody loves them.

ScummyMummy · 10/06/2006 22:53

Ooo! A new list too. Super brave, Hope it all goes well.:)

Gosh people!! chill... so there's junk on the list but lifes too short not to have the odd bickie or crisp my suggestion is definately to buy less and buy plain crisps they only contain potatoes, sunflower oil and salt (lite ones are best imo)and when it runs out thats it also you can try homemade popcorn low in everything and you can try all kinds of toppings!

your hubby is an adult so he can eat what he likes just try to encourage him to eat less.. my father always had his own treats he hid them and we spent most of the time trying to steal them!!Grin

buy your nann from your local resturant tastes much better

as others have suggested try cooking homemade curries/stews/pasta you'll be surprised how easy it can be.. you can eat basmati rice it's good for your cholesterol.

try making your own salads..pre-packed ones are v expensive and the bags contain a gas that
keeps them fresh v dodgy indeed!

Frozen veg is just as good as fresh and keeps longer no mankiness or guilt about wasting it.

One tip I try to do with snacks is only buy them when the're on special offer.

hope some of this helpsSmile

jenk1 · 10/06/2006 23:40

Oh yes go on WWW let me have a look at your shopping list i vaguely remember it.

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 11/06/2006 08:17

Jen I think it's great and you have taken on so many of our suggestions. I agree that the best way to make changes is slowly - if you go straight from loads of junk and all ready meals, to fruit and all meals cooked from scratch, it will seem quite hard and probably you won't want to repeat it next time.

I think ready mixes of scones etc are a good halfway house to making your own.

And as for picking on the few totally unhealthy things that are left - come on, chaps, give her a break :)

I do agree that home made ice lollies are cheaper and just as nice though. \link{http://www.cookability.biz/Kitchen_Craft_Ice_Lolly_Maker/b_1227.htm?SRC=FR1\These} are the things everyone is talking about to make them yourself in the freezer - you just pour in apple juice or whatever and they are really nice and sweet.

chonky · 11/06/2006 09:17

Vast improvement Jenk - that's a huge step forward. Well done for posting your list, I don't think I'd be brave enough to have my shopping trolley contents scrutinised by MNetters Wink

Fillyjonk · 11/06/2006 11:08

yes, i also want to say that you've done really really well jenk. i used to eat the sort of stuff in your first shopping list. now i am mrs food fascist. but i did not do it over night, it took months. and i didn't have older kids-or indeed any kids.

Fillyjonk · 11/06/2006 11:09

And I would not let MN see my shopping trolley, even now! Blush

(The 11 big bars of chocolate are for ME, so its OK...)

WideWebWitch · 11/06/2006 11:15

jenk, I looked but couldn't find it. If anyone else can they're most welcome to post a link though.

BagelBird · 11/06/2006 11:20

Fillyjonk - exactly what I was thinking. After reading this thread (which I know is full of helpful and positive suggestions) there is NO WAY I could let you lot pick over mine!!
We are on a slimming world diet so no crisps/cakes/biscuits but have a funny feeling it would still be a scandal to all you dieticians. I just can’t be bothered to make my own ryvita..sorry Grin

Fillyjonk · 11/06/2006 11:21

Shock at bagelbird being too downright lazy to make her own ryvita.

Well anyway, am off to google a recipe for aduki bean ice-cream, tra la la.

Wink

(no, actually, I really am Blush)

Fillyjonk · 11/06/2006 11:21

...with chocolate sauce, naturally....
