I'm not great either Jenk and buy too much crap, but I have put my foot down with the ready meals.

I would second the thing about roast chicken - its so easy - I sometimes do it twice a week. And also maybe a risotto with the left overs (know that wouldn't help with your sons). Also sometimes frying steak - quick with some mashed spuds.

I don't buy many biscuits - just very plain ones so they are grateful for what they get.

Veg - limited range they like, but have pushed brocoli and baby sweetcorn which they eat with fingers.

I find food very hard and admire pple who have it licked - good luck to you.

Jenk - what about buying some of your shopping from Lidl or Aldi?

Yes, they do still stock some junk so willpower still required, but they also stock good fruit and veg, parma ham, fresh pasta, fruit juice/ hi -juice squash, cheese etc. at very reasonable prices.
Lidl's nappies are only a fiver for a large pack, and are just as good as the branded nappies.
Oh, and if you really want bottled water it's ridiculously cheap.

EmmyLou · 10/06/2006 19:02

Think you need to call in Gillian Mckeith for your DH Grin.

We have crisp day on a Tuesday - I found that having a particular day for a treat/snack stops them asking for them at other times and gives you back-up in that you can say NO more easily.

Could you try a vegie box and fruit delivery scheme - there are loads out there.

Could you agree to alternate homecooked meals with ready meals to at least try the weaning off junk process?

JanH · 10/06/2006 19:16

My DH buys snacks on his credit card every time he buys fuel (about 4 times a week) Angry (He does eat fruit etc as well but he just loves choccy bars and crisps)

moondog · 10/06/2006 19:27

God Jenk, that list is unspeakably grim.
There is nothing on it that I would eat or feed my family apart from maybe the cheese and veggies.

I can't believe Rhubarb, that you define pasta and a jar of sauce as a meal 'made from scratch.'
No it's not,it's industrial slurry.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 10/06/2006 19:30

LGJ legs it, to get her hard hat.

jenk1 · 10/06/2006 19:42

i have just had a chat with DH, He says he wont give up his biscuits and crisps.
So i will have to wean him off them slowly, when i said what about something else thats healthier he suggested onion bhajis and popadums Shock

Ive taken all the constructive comments on board and there are a lot of good ideas.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 10/06/2006 19:43

Well make him buy them out of his own money as suggested.

moondog · 10/06/2006 19:44

'own money'??
They're married-it belongs to them both!

Cod · 10/06/2006 20:07

godh theres a lto fo precessed meat on there

LadySherlockofLGJ · 10/06/2006 20:11

What I meant was that he had to make a special trip to the supermarket to get it from the cash in his pocket, as opposed to it just appearing in the house week after week.

Did you read the whole thread MD ??

Cod · 10/06/2006 20:13

fight

niceglasses · 10/06/2006 20:19

'industrial slurry' bit harsh aint it?

Anyhoo Jenk - wot about crisps just at the weekend or something like that or a choccie biccy every other night? Sorry if it sounds like I'm talking 'bout a kid, but I sort of do this with my eldest ds.

DumbledoresGirl · 10/06/2006 20:33

Moondog, you are a complete foodie snob Wink. I am a queen in the kitchen (you once admired me for making my own profiteroles from scratch) and don't normally use pasta sauce jars, but I bought one the other day when we were on holiday because holidays are for better things than slaving in the kitchen, and the ingredients read exactly as they would have done if I had made the sauce from scratch: tomatoes, onions, garlic, herbs etc. It tasted very nice too. I won't be buying it again until I am on holiday again and not wanting to spend time in the kitchen, but only because I like to use fresh ingredients and not waste money. If someone isn't a great cook, I would recommend a jar of pasta sauce over a ready cooked meal anyday.

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2006 20:40

I was the one who brought up the 'own' money thing - dp and I do not have joint finances, not every couple does. We each have our own money separate from what we budget for food and so on. If I want to buy clothes, make-up, go out for tea with a friend etc, I pay for it out of that money. Dp spends his money on bike things and crisps :)

moondog · 10/06/2006 20:44

I'm no snob DG.
I know that what we put into our bodies makes a big difference to how we look, act, think and feel.

I am just as happy eating sardines on a bit of toast and having a cup of tea as I am strutting my stuff over an obscure Levantine pastry.

Today for lunch,we had ham (bought a hock-£1.75)tomato,cuke and capsicum salad, lentil and fetta salad and bread.
Cost bugger all, tasted delicious and i was entertaining!

moondog · 10/06/2006 20:46

Although holidays to me mean even more time in the kitchen. Grin

I don't get that sauce stuff. The mark up is phenomenal. Even if they tasted good (which they don't)I would refuse to be fleeced because I can't be arsed to fry up a bit of onion and garlic and lob in a can or two of tomatoes.

popsycal · 10/06/2006 20:46

jenk1 0 left to his own devices, dh would buy a similar list (though not quite so many treats and ready meals)

I have got totally strict and have put myself in charge of food shopping. partly due to cash - both physically buying it and dh spending mountains on unnecssary cack; and partly due to making our food more healthy

I plan 7 meals.. write down the ingredients and buy exactly what is on the list first (I mainly sho online). then i buy any essential household products that we have run out of. then I let dh and ds1 ask for 1 treat (within a certain price range) - chcolate, crisps, desserts etc.

I buy biscuits at aldi once in a while. I make puddings a few times a week. DS1 likes to make little cakes. I buy basics like bread, tinned tomatoes, some veg at aldi.

I also buy apples, bananas and one other fruit each week. Yoghurt I buy a big pot of natural yoghurt from tesco or aldi and add puree to it.

If I make chilli for example, i make double portions and freeze it for the follwoing week or in a fortnight when i cant be bothered to cook or have been at work that day. i have a few fast recipes up my sleeve for other days when I cant be bothered.

any other choc, crisps, pop, alcohol is bought out of a weekly personal allowance we have allocated for ourselves (well - I allocated it :)

hth

PrincessPeaHead · 10/06/2006 20:47

god you buy and eat a lot of crap

DumbledoresGirl · 10/06/2006 20:48

Well, you can relax about some of those pasta sauce jars. Assuming the ingredients list is correct, they really do only contain normal ingredients IYSWIM. Not fresh of course, but not industrial slurry. Not that I have ever come across industrial slurry to make a fair comparison.

moondog · 10/06/2006 20:50

DG,I stiffen when in close proximity to a pasta sauce (Pesto excepted)
It is a Pavlovian response.

They are full of weird industrial starch (aka wallpaper paste) to thicken them up for a start.
I defy you to find one without a bulker of some sort.

WelshBoris · 10/06/2006 20:53

very constructive PPH

DumbledoresGirl · 10/06/2006 20:56

Moondog, I wish I had the jar to hand that I bought the other week, but unfortunately it is now occupying a landfill site somewhere in the northwest. So I can't remember the brand it was, and as I said I am not a reuglar buyer of such things, but I can assure you I read the ingredients and there was not one thing in it that I would not put in a pasta sauce myself.

moondog · 10/06/2006 20:57

Hmmmmmmmmmm
Send one of your brood to retrieve jar in question, then we talk.
