Fledglings Fly in Flaming June; C.H.A.O.S. will be banished soon!

sanguinechompa · 31/05/2012 08:27

Welcome to the June 2012 Fledgling Flyers thread. Park your mops, buckets and microfibre cloths here!!

A huge "thank you" to Toffee for leading us throughout May!! Hope you have a fabulous holiday in Spain!!

If you're house is a mess and you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine along the way.

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes, and as we are all at different stages we will be using one of the following methods:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

More info here, here and here

All welcome!!

Carpe, I was just thinking the exact same thing about the whole house what if someone wants to come into my house from Sports Day and they notice the unswept path...ridiculous, people just want to be welcomed, and they don't care about the path/oven, and if they judge, so be it they can't come next time

swanthingafteranother · 26/06/2012 10:13

done
two loos
two basins
washing downstairs
three bedrooms rescued
newspapers in big bin liner

dressed, showered, Sports Day attire (necklace) finding hat,
off now with large water bottle.

feetheart · 26/06/2012 11:32

:o at necklace as additional attire for Sports Day Swan, must remember for Thurs and Fri (KS1 and 2 on different days!)

List somewhat altered as I had forgotten that I had to take cats for their annual check-up/injections. Had tried yesterday but one cat had legged it then the other put on an impressive turn of speed when DH and I messed up the door-opening in the kitchen/garden and we lost him too Hmm
Two shut in, p*ssed off cats this morning but got them done.
Got about 30mins before need to get to school, via School Assoc treasurer's house. Have given up on work but will try a few room rescues - hall, kitchen, our bedroom to start with. If DH shifts from the living room out to his office in the garden I could do in there but he looks settled!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 26/06/2012 21:50

Swan - I agree about the sugar burst thing, I am trying to keep my energy levels more stable by eating oatcakes mid morning and mid afternoon, usually with a bit of cheese in the afternoon, it really helps stop (or decrease anyway) the carb cravings as I get the dinner ready.

swanthingafteranother · 26/06/2012 22:52

SC hope your sore throat is feeling better
OFM great running!
Whoknows an oatcake would push me over the edge, I love oatcakes and can eat packets!
Bitchy hope ds survived empty room syndrome

well I feel very guilty today - poor ds has sunburned thighs - I forgot to bother with the suncream, and what with the combination of shorts and Sports Day SadBlush - so we have been dabbing calamine, sudocream and cooling towels on his legs, also Nurofen by mouth..
hopefully tomorrow it will be a tan, he has very Mediterranean skin.

Sports Day was a bit of eye opener. Ds2 was brilliantly behaved, but I see now his coordination difficulties - skipping for example. He did the 500 km very enthusiastically. Dd seems to be a creditable average - she seems to be able to turn her hand to anything, but if there's one thing she refuses to do, it is cross country running Grin

done
swept path
all recycling out
cut up carpet NOPE
booked second batch of Irish tickets HALF
grocery shopping as per menu plan HALF
piano lesson for dd
netball dd
lots of violin and piano playing from dd and ds1 Smile for fun
cleared supper
hung out clothes
stayed away from snacks after supper apart from one tiny bit of goat's cheese and a glass of tonic water

sanguinechompa · 26/06/2012 23:59

Hello all. Hope you've all had a good day.

Please excuse me just posting and running without personals. Still battling virus. Dh away and got through everything I was supposed to do today but only just. Think I am going to put back the weight lost last week as crawled from car to sofa to car and ate a load of carbs to keep nausea at bay.

Hope to catch up tomorrow

Today's baby-step no. 27, for Wed 27th June is here A good one - adding supper plans to your routines.

This week, we are in Zone 5, the sitting room

Try and declutter for 15 minutes a day in the current zone.

Once your sitting room is decluttered, you can progress to detailed cleaning

You can find today's mission here 5 min dusting of knick knacks and picture frames

The habit for June is a good one - drinking water - more info here

Wednesday is anti-procrastination day do those things we have been putting off

If I've forgotten anything it will be in the flight plan which should update automatically, as should kids challenge

Sleep well everyone!

Morning all.

Have been a little lax of late so haven't caught up on the thread.

List for today to get me motivated.....

shred
washing-up
finish and email curriculum plans for next year
write leaving speech for colleague
end of year do this afternoon/eve
put away washing
start thinking about DHs 40th bday present - I have no idea and it's in 2 weeks time!

swanthingafteranother · 27/06/2012 09:08

So,
ds2 is now off with his sunburned thighs Blush as he can't play sports, so once again, I am out of synch with life...[was planning to go into school and do loads of cataloguing]

Still feel pretty undirected and bleugh in the mornings. However

done
confirmed date of return journey from Ireland in August, and cunningly arranged for dh to take children back separately so I can have a whole day clearing up holiday cottage without them, packing etc and not travel with 3 children That was easy, why didnt I think of this in the last three years? I find the packing bit of any holiday very stressful so it is a perfect solution.

Still brooding about my various "triggers" and trying to decide whether to go down the CBT route or see the pyschiatrist; I think a classic hallmark of depression is the inability to make decisions, unfortunately Grin Waiting to get back to Dr for referral on the pysch. Have been reading my friend's book on Depression, makes a fascinating read but I feel more undirected than ever...has lots of solutions too as she has battled for last 14 years with it.Sad

However...
Todo
get dressed
think of plan to deal with ds2 who is easily converted to couch potato, so need to avoid that
handwriting practice?
CHOP UP CARPET
visit to Staples with ds2, ditto B & Q
send ds back to school?
laundry away
HOLIDAY PLANS, FOCUS FOR 30 mins on various ways that might make holiday more enjoyable, avoid usual problems Wink
more kitten food from Vet, and book neutering!!!!

done
meatballs for tonight

CarpeJugulum · 27/06/2012 09:30

swan would recommend the CBT first - if nothing else, it gave me a lot of "coping" mechanisms; although a psychiatrist is also good, but personally, I needed to learn to cope before looking at the reasons. If you're not motivated, try making a list the night before and get very specific on it - so
get up
shower
get dressed
make coffee
etc
I found that the more I could score off lists, the more motivated it made me feel.

Anyhoo, in a rush this morning as trying to persuade DS to have a very early nap so he's up in time to go for a posh lunch with friends and kids. I'm quite proud of myself coz I was invited, and am making myself go - even if I don't know some people very well and even if I'm not sure that DS will be operating at 100%. Worst case scenario, I have to take him out. Best case, I have a lovely lunch.

Then it will hopefully be the supermarket. I have a printed checklist now with space for "other" things - so I can just tick off what I need as can DH. It's a bit organised for me, but I'm sick of getting back and moaning that I've forgotten x,y or z (milk last time!).

Right, on with the work and then DS for a nap. Please god let this work!

BitchyInTheCorner · 27/06/2012 09:45

Ds is hellish. I had forgotten how bad it gets this term. How I had forgotten is another question.

To do:
paperwork
meeting
framers
banking
laundry
folding
ironing
swimming lesson
try not to kill any one - figuratively rather then literally of course.
book doctor's appointment.
Sit down with strategy book and try to figure out how to fix this chaos so that it works and stays working.

Am going out. Had enough of the house now. Fed up beyond belief!

Engelsmeisje · 27/06/2012 10:29

swan DH has been doing cbt since Feb and it's really helped him. He's had 2 setbacks the last 2 weeks (his leg and work stuff) that would have sent him spiralling down a few months ago, but thatnks to the progress he's making with cbt he's been able to deal with things a lot better. he sees a psychiatrist as well, but only once every 2 months or so to monitor his progress (as only the psychiatrist can prescribe ADs).

Have you read "I had a black dog"? Great cartoon style book.

swanthingafteranother · 27/06/2012 11:07

Carpe, good luck with the posh lunch, it's a bit like preparing a rocket launch isn't it..no I don't mean that, the great thing is to look at it as if it's the most casual thing in the world to go to posh lunch with small child. Have a great time whatever befalls!

Ds driving me mad, and I can't order my blooming hoover! Dh was threatening to fix the old one, and I know he won't manage it...aargh.

sanguinechompa · 27/06/2012 11:34

Hello everyone.

Still feeling a bit grim. Throat a bit better but no energy, constant perspiration (sorry for tmi) and the world is spinning a bit. Terrible timing!! Got to carry on because this is my last week of freedom.

Swan I am a bit cross with school because dd came back from sports day last night with sunburn on her arms, a very red face/neck and two patches of sunburn under her eyes. We applied cream in the morning and were asked to put it in their bags which we did, but no-one reminded them to reapply and they were out in the sun all day. Another issue with school bus seat belt that I won't bore you all with. But you'd think some adult could have had the presence of mind to tell the dc to put cream on themselves. Eight year olds (and above!) need reminding! Hope your ds2 is OK poor lad.

Isn't CBT a "prescribed" talking therapy whereas with psychiatrist, treatment is more medicalised (ie treatment with anti-depressants). Are there any other options such as just talking in a non pre-prescribed way ie psychologist? Reason I ask is because my cousin found latter most helpful but said you had to be quite motivated to take full advantage ifyswim which is difficult if one is depressed.

Deff agree about making food "count" more when restricting intake. I keep trying to think of healthy recipes that I can adapt so dd will eat (she's reasonably good but not terribly adventurous).

Great you have holiday plans sorted. Funnily enough, cleaning out a holiday apartment (easy with only one child mind you) is one of my very favourite bits of the holiday (old saddo emoticon) because it is so "contained" and "manageable" in comparison to this house (and clutter free!). I always spend far too long on it for that reason and drive dh mad!

Good to hear garden looking good after all your efforts and that you can finally enjoy it! If it's any consolation, owing to mahoosive slug population, I can only grown veg in pots here (aside from runner beans and a few courgettes) and not in main beds. It's a bit limiting but possible. Would kill for proper veg patch.

Carpe Hope numtums not too onerous, enjoy your posh lunch and well done on making yourself go! Supermarket strategy list sounds v. good idea. It's all too easy to be distracted whilst shopping with a lo.

Arf at fish finger paranoia btw! Fish fingers feature fairly regularly in Friday suppers chez Chompa! There - I've said it - out and proud Grin

Lauren how is your horse doing btw? Any developments? Well done re: do-able lists and enjoy your visitors today.

Sorry your ds behaviour proving testing Bitchy It is a tiring time of year - will be the end of term before you know it! Hang in there!

Engelsmeijse good luck with the speech writing (don't think we've had that appear in a list on here before!)

What does your dh like doing? It's dh's 50ieth coming up in a few months. HAve decided upon an all-singing-all-dancing-barbecue grill type thing as he loves cooking outside and the only thing we have currently is an inherited rusted Weber with a hole in the base. Plus am organising an evening out at a cooking school with friends.

Hope you enjoy your end of year party tonight!

Whoknows have been eating oat cakes too. One of my standard breakfasts with honey and blueberries - but surprisingly calorific if add in oj too. Good for sustained energy though. And yes, yes I know ... must get back on MFP Blush Thanks for reminder!! Grin

OFM congrats on your mahoosive list yesterday. (Sorry - I know I'm repeating myself - but I still feel weak at line "6 dc up, dressed and breakfasted". To go for 4 mile run after all that lot is miraculous too!!)

Feetheart hope cats passed fitness assessment. Wishing you courage for two successive sports days!!

Likelucklove well done re: conscise, do-able lists and for doing missions!

OP posts:
sanguinechompa · 27/06/2012 11:43

x post

Agree about posh lunches with small child Swan (I wasn't ever brave enough)

Good to hear your dh is benefiting so much from CBT Engelsmeijse

Had better get on and force myself to do something productive. Fortunately, dd is at a friends' house this afternoon so I have a free period of about 3 hours.

And fortnightly ironing lady has just turned up - wrong day - but it is a fortnight since she last visited!! So things are looking up!

OP posts:
Honu · 27/06/2012 12:15

Re depression: DH had really bad panic attacks and depression about 5 months after his accident, when he realised he was never going to get back to what he could do before. Because this started very suddenly on the Friday night before a bank holiday we tried the Bach flower remedies ('load of rubbish - just placebos' he said at first) which helped quite a bit. The doctor then prescribed AD meds which so upset his physical condition he had to stop taking them. We finally went to a homeopath who prescribed arsenic (isn't that Agatha Christie's poison of choice?) which worked. Now he keeps Bach's mimulus and rescue remedy for when the world seems a bit black.

sanguinechompa · 27/06/2012 12:35

Honu how utterly horrible for your dh to have to cope with the sudden onset of panic attacks on top of everything else. (I used to get them occasionally when I worked in London and they are utterly debilitating - feel like you are drowning/dying.) That must have been so unsettling for him.

Who would have though arsenic was the answer (albeit diluted a thousand times) Shock? Have heard others swear by Bach remedies too.

Thank heavens your dh has found something effective which works for him though.

OP posts:
ToffeeWhirl · 27/06/2012 13:32

Ta da list so far:

Up and dressed
Breakfasts
Packed lunch for DS2
Helped DS1 with History hwk
Wasted time looking for DS2 who was hiding Angry (first day back at school - he has been off with a cold so far this week)
Took DS2 back to school - him grumbling all the way
Back home again
Checked DS1's hwk - it was fab! Really funny and imaginative (he had to do a comic strip on the origins of the Cold War)
Emailed hwk to teacher
Welcomed weekly LEA teacher
Washing up
Shined sink
Swept kitchen floor
Emptied bin
Put recycling out
Tackled underneath DS2's bed Shock - large binbag required
Quick chat with LEA teacher, who told me DS1's History hwk was used as a good example in his lesson Grin
DS1 and me - snacks and breaktime

Going for a walk in a minute, reading the zombie adventure story together, then DS1 has another online lesson and I'm going back upstairs to finish tackling DS2's bedroom.

Have a problem with my freezer - it won't shut Hmm. I haven't had time to defrost it, so I keep sticking the door with parcel tape, but it's not holding it any more. DH says he will treat us to a new, self-defrosting freezer very soon Smile. Might have to start eating up all the food inside it this evening...

likelucklove - you asked me what sort of dog we were planning to get. DS1 has set his heart on having a Border Collie. I was very wary at first, but have had lots of advice from a Collie rescue centre who will try to find us a Collie that will fit our life and family. They advised that we get a grown dog, not a puppy.

Re: washing machine. You must have one! Don't even consider living without one. I did without a dishwasher for a year when DH lost his job and we had no money. I wasted hours of my life standing at the sink, doing the washing up, and was so happy when I finally got a dishwasher again. Think of all the hours of your life you will lose if you have to hand wash everything!

OFM- do you get up really early? I'm in awe of what you manage to do before you leave for the school run. Not to mention everything else you achieve in the day.

SC - so sorry you are feeling grotty. I hope you improve soon. Glad your ironing lady has turned up at last.

Lauren - hope new mindee visit is good.

Engels - good luck at thinking up something for your DH's birthday. Is he dropping any helpful hints?

Swan - sorry about the sunburn Sad. I hope it heals soon (DC do heal very quickly, usually). I like your idea about sending DH home with DC, so that you can get on with packing up on your own. Much quicker and less stressful. Re: CBT - DS2 has had CBT twice and I have had it myself too. I would say it is generally very helpful. Having sat through DS's sessions as well, I now use quite a lot of it myself and recognise things I'm doing that are unhelpful, eg catastrophising; or seeing things in black and white (eg. either I will feel fine travelling on the train, or I will have a panic attack and everyone will stare at me - whereas the truth is more likely that I will feel nervous, but I will cope, ie somewhere in the middle).

Why are you chopping up a carpet, by the way?!

Carpe - hope posh lunch goes well.

Bitchy - sorry DS is being trying and you are fed up Sad.

Right, have to get DS out for some fresh air. BBL.

BitchyInTheCorner · 27/06/2012 14:05

It's life with a child who doesn't do change. And it is only going to get worse between now and the end of the holidays. I can't wait until september!!!!

I am fed up with behaviour. I am fed up with spending so much energy dealing with behaviour. I am fed up of the state of the house but constantly being blocked by other people so I can't do anything about it who then literally spend hours giving grief over the fact that I am dealing with behaviour and that the house isn't tamed. First get the fuck up off your own ass and pull your weight, secondly don't suddenly take time off and get in the fucking way. thirdly behaviour or house it is not possible to do both. fourthly if i could move i would have done years ago you miserable bastard.

Anyhow gently working through the list and hoping to get the ta da list to be longer then the to do list by the end of the day.

ToffeeWhirl · 27/06/2012 14:09
swanthingafteranother · 27/06/2012 14:22

If it is close relatives you are talking about Bitchy I know that frustrating feeling when they interfere, but without actually being helpful... Sorry you are having such a foul time. Ds has spent the day glued to screens, occasionally conversing with me about edible flowers Shock but otherwise it has been seemingly impossible to motivate him whilst I wait in for various calls and appts...I just don't have strength to argue with him atm. I think that his version of not liking "change" - the telly is a safe haven for him.

SC I have just been talking to an older cousin about her rabbits. Apparently they are all highly intelligent too, have gadgets etc - her husband is fascinated by rabbits. I was actually trying to palm a putative kitten off on her (as yet a twinkle in my eye, cat is only 5 months) but she explained the rabbits were her priority.
This sunburn thing does seem to be an issue in all institutional settings. I think they should have suntan cream drill for these special outdoor events, rather than rely on parents being organised, or children remembering. They don't have to apply suntan lotion themselves, just tell the children to do it. If necessary, some parents could opt out if children allergic. I remember one scout camp some children of 8yrs came back very sunburnt in the face, and that was a weekend event so there was no way a parent could have checked or reminded. But this time it was really OUR fault, I'd just forgotten that ds2 doesn't ever wear short shorts outside except in PE.

swanthingafteranother · 27/06/2012 14:28

Toffee so glad that ds is enjoying the online learning and especially the History.

Done
saw fireplace man. £££££ to ponder, not sure if we can afford to change to a stove from an existing fireplace, chimney lining, chimney stack. Which sort of widens the arena for possibly knocking the wall down [rubs her hands in glee]

rang up CBT therapist, and left a message

still waiting for Dr to ring back about referral Angry 3 days now we have missed each other

dw
washing upstairs
ordered new hoover from M & S catalogue(the selection at JL was doing my head in)
ordered summer weight duvet
ordered hoover bags

sent off cheques
and I will go to Staples when the dr has called!!!!! aargh

ToffeeWhirl · 27/06/2012 14:53

Oh, Swan, I jinxed the online learning Sad. DS1 just had a disastrous afternoon session: teacher furious with him, thinking he'd insulted another pupil online, DS angry at the injustice because he hadn't meant to insult anyone - just expressed himself all wrong. DS stormed off and I then had to sort it all out with the teacher, who was lovely. Now DS says he won't do anymore online learning. Am just going to go and have a good cry somewhere now...
