What is this monster thread I keep hearing mentioned? I dont believe Ive seen it in active conversations. Then again it wouldnt surprise me if its been right in front of me and Ive just not noticed.

BlueEyeshadow · 07/01/2012 18:41

notvery - the monster thread is here ...

Between us, DH and I have managed most of the list. The boys seem to have been particularly demanding this afternoon though.

Flyingoutofcontrol · 07/01/2012 19:53

Hi ladies,

Firstly, huge to SC; I lost my mum a few years ago so you have my deepest sympathy. As others have said, if there is anything we can do to help, please just ask. Otherwise, we'll see you back here when you are ready.

I haven't got a lot of time as DH is sick so I'm on DS duty and he's a bit unsettled coz DH is ill... However, DH must be really sick as he's looking horrible and talking about only going into work on Monday to drop something off and then coming home! Shock

Anyway, hope you're all having a good weekend - I'll catch up with you all on Monday Smile

notveryinventive · 07/01/2012 22:09

Thanks blue had a quick look, but it looks the same as this, is it? Can I ask what the difference between that thread and this one is then? Ok so I didnt read it all, just the first couple of posts and the last couple, bit late at night to be reading it all.

Dont know why Im asking really as Im happy with just being on here, but Im nosey really.

ToffeeWhirl · 07/01/2012 23:04

Notveryinventive - I started the new thread a few days before January (thanks for your nice words, by the way, Swanthingafteranother Smile), but Mumsnetters were seized by New-Year-resolution fever and so many jumped in that it quickly turned into what we now call the 'monster' thread. This happened last year too (I ran that January thread as well), but it went particularly crazy this year. I'm still running it, but Bitchy kindly started this extra thread to provide experienced Fledglings with somewhere quieter to chat. Many of us found the new thread was just too overwhelming and felt inhibited about chatting freely.

Bitchy is doing all the links here, so there's actually no need to go on the other thread. (Thanks for the round up here, Bitchy).

Speaking of the other thread, I have just finished rounding up and doing the links and am now too exhausted to add any personals to this thread too. It's really great to see so many newbies taking so well to Flying though. It has really helped me, so it's good to see it helping others too.

I spent this morning and afternoon having friends here for my DC and then went to bed this afternoon (still fighting off a bit of a bug, I think). Slept for four hours!

DH has done the bedtime routines and made bread for tomorrow. He hasn't shined the sink though, so I might sneak down and do it soon. Or shall I skip it for once? (sick note). I might do. Don't tell the Flyers on the other thread though.

IceColdBitchy · 07/01/2012 23:09
OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 07/01/2012 23:17

Toffee - skip it! Go on, I will sign your sick note (and not tell the other thread) .

Notvery - yes, what Toffee says really, we felt that with so many newcomers on the other thread our chat might look a bit cliquey and offputting, as well as cluttering up an already crowded thread.

Bitchy - thanks for a nice concise but informative roundup.

Lovely day here, DH at work, the rest of us had a pyjama morning (don't tell Flylady) and then went out for a walk this afternoon as the weather was so nice. My two aren't usually keen on going for walks for no particular purpose, but do like this particular route (it is a steep twisty path where they can run away and hide), When we got to the top of the hill we walked for about half a mile and found a big patch of mud, DS started sliding and twirling in it and of course fell over, well there was no stopping him them, rolling and sliding till he looked like a hippo, DD joined in (in a slightly more restrained manner) so we all went home again happy and muddy.

DH is working again tomorrow, planning another PJ morning and then a shoe shopping trip for the DCs, plus we need to look at birthday stuff for DD (party bags, presents etc).

ChitChatInChaos · 07/01/2012 23:23

So sorry to hear about your mother, SC.

I haven't done all that much 'flying' as such, but yesterday and today I took everything out of the boxes and have started sorting them and the items stacked around the house and put them back into boxes, but 'themed' and indexed so that I can refind what I need when I need it. Haven't really decluttered as such (although have thrown out a lot) just put things away so that I can find them when I need them. And more to the point, I can move the boxes quickly when I need to get to the walls to paint them!!!!

laurenamium · 07/01/2012 23:24

Hiya all! Thanks for roundup bitchy!

IceColdBitchy · 07/01/2012 23:41

Right in the wake of a fabulous evening, current lack of Wine and the impending hitting of stronger pain killers. Going to quickly dump the links and possible just pass out would be lovely cos ouch

Sunday is renew your spirit - the fat fairy suggests exercise might help, in her usual twee flowery lanuage of course.

Babystep 8: Construct that control journal. Erm think a lot of us are way ahead of you on that. Perhaps we should ammend it to look and at use the control journal?

no missions
i refuse to fly tomo and am going to have a lie in followed by picking ds up. driving many miles. Am not 100% and will actually try to remember to phone the doc/dentist/someone to fix me. Oh and not to take meds and read the cautions after taking meds Blush I am likely to be sleepy tomo whoops. Although a side affect I will probably benefit from being the one who doesn't sleep with my new years resolution of sorting out sleep deficite and sleep pattern. Have good sunday's. Night.

laurenamium · 08/01/2012 09:55

BBL

ToffeeWhirl · 08/01/2012 12:00

Bitchy - thanks, but no thanks for last night's Wine. Am still off the booze following my NY antics Blush. Hope you feel better today.

WhoKnows - thanks for my sick note ( I did skip the shiny-sink step last night). Feeling better for my early night and a long lie in this morning. Hope you get your PJ morning.

Chitchat - I like the idea of cataloguing the contents of your boxes. What do you do exactly? Number each box, list the contents on cards and then file? I think I should do that.

Lauren - hope you and DP are getting on better today. It's tough to keep relationships on an even keel with small children.

Well, so much for my lie in. Although I have determinedly stayed in bed, I have been visited regularly by each of the three males in this house - at one point, I had all three of them in bed with me. DH wanted a shopping list, so I spent a large portion of the morning menu planning and typing out a list for him, when I had hoped to browse MN plan our budget. DH and DS1 have now gone out, but DS2 has plonked himself right next to me, promising not to disturb me Hmm. Think I might just give up and get up in a minute.

Had a bit of a disagreement with DH over our routines this morning. He refused to follow my Flylady routines and said he'd do the chores 'his way'. This seems to involve sitting at the table, reading the Sunday papers. He has now done the washing up, but left it all draining on the sideboard, with the usual missed cups and cutlery on the counters, waiting for the kitchen elves to deal with.

Maybe I should make a list to motivate myself:

Get dressed and make self human
Sort kitchen out properly
Hoover up pine needles (put tree out for recycling this morning)
Put shopping away
Family trip to museum (greeted with distinct lack of enthusiasm from DC, but it's free and gets them out and off computers)
What's for dinner? Roast chicken
Washing up
Check school stuff for tomorrow
Bedtime routines
Before-bed routine
Bed at decent hour

See you all later.

Flyingoutofcontrol · 08/01/2012 12:22

Afternoon Morning all!

Right, DH is in bed with the cold/flu (he's really poorly Sad) and DS is napping. Bread is in the breadmaker, dinner for DH & I is in the slow cooker (Anthony W-T receipe from this very website!), en-suite is S&S'd, sink is shiny, so I've plonked myself on the couch with the netbook (plugged in! ) so that I can catch up properly and brain dump all over you Grin

Toffee glad you're feeling better
Bitchy hope you feel better
laure good luck with the list
Whoknows Envy of your PJ morning. I was also still in my PJ's yesterday as DH was poorly so I slept upstairs with DS and then couldn't get showered/dressed until DH woke and DS napped. I looked lovely hoovering Grin but definitely not the Flylady way Wink
waves to everyone else.

So, finished Sink Reflections and have already vowed to make changes. Still a bit Hmm about the PC-ness of the book - it's a bit religious and "men are great" for me in terms of the affidavits and some of the in-between bits; but on the other hand, the main cleaning methods appear sound. I need to re-read bits I think, especially regarding the control journal which I really need to actually set up, and not just have in my head but I do feel inspired.

I have invited fellow friendly mums round on Monday AND Tuesday, so hoping that house is tidy-ish. The dining room is not great - clutter from Christmas and charity stuff, but equally if a child ran in and mum followed, I wouldn't have an attack of the vapours Wink. Certainly the S&S on the toilet and the bathroom means that I'm not feeling as scared of guests as I was about 6 months ago.

Today, I need to go to Boots for vital supplies but don't know if DH will be coming along or not - I may just bundle DS in the car and leave him in the pit of doom bed, but with strict instructions to at least have a quick shower to try to make him smell more fragrant feel better.

Right, off to the monster thread to see if I can lend a hand... Have a nice Sunday!

swanthingafteranother · 08/01/2012 13:56

yes it is me Swan the old one on the river. I haven't flown to the sea yet!

SC I bet you have a lot of your mother's qualities, it is must be so hard losing her. Christmas is so much about thinking about childhood blessings isn't it,and the future always seems very uncertain, at this time of year. Much sympathy.

well I am pleased that I've done

mass this morning with sons
dh has taken dd to Tate Modern finally or was is Nat G? to get away from us all! [bad mood bear]
playroom/or shall I call it home office Confused finally rationalised and needles removed

coped with BREAKDOWN OF WASHING MACHINE (why did I wash that doormat?) without resorting to violence, after two floods and home repairs

ds1 history homework yesterday on Ed Confess

visited friend after church with boys

dd's room has lost a chest of drawers and gained some organisation

landing has new chest of drawers [sigh, we are never ever going to sort out the storage arrangements in this house]

notdone
House still a complete mess, apart from playroom Confused Sink piled high, kitchen in tatters due to washing situation.
resolved situation with Dh who is in very bad mood with me being fed up Confused

sotodo to gain sanity
take load of washing to laundrette
iron clothes
walk xmas tree to park reycling? to get rid of it now before Wed...
rubbish piled high in hall in bin liners outside
get ds1 to do his Tectonics page for geog

Flyign you sound superorganised! Bread making as well as everything else is my idea of a very organised person. Your Dh too Toffee

Toffee love the idea of everyone following you upstairs; Dh insisted on getting up this mornign although he felt ill, and I said, just stay there, everyone will join you...you don't need to feel guilty...which is when he decided to go to the Art Gallery Shock

ChitChatInChaos · 08/01/2012 13:57

Bitchy - thanks for the links - still constucting my contol journal actually.

Toffee - that's exactly what I've done. I bought large plastic boxes (various sized, but all quite large), numbered them with a BIG number on one end (but may have to add some to the other end in case they get turned around) and as I filled them with things I wrote on the index card what I put in there.

So far I have:

Valuable Christening present box (all those silver etc things!!)
Keep Sake/Memories box
Filing box (until I get a filing cabinet)
Sewing Box
Picnic Box (with all the picnic/plastic things)
Present box (new items to GIVE as presents)
Stationery
Craft (V differentto sewing)
Children's craft
Occasional wear clothing

Some of my boxes will probably end up being more mixed, sure I will end up with lots of 'miscellaneous' boxes!

Today is more general tidying/filing in the lounge/diner. As soon as I get that done I will attack my bedoom. Getting there slowly!!!

ChitChatInChaos · 08/01/2012 13:58

Oh, and to add, the boxes need to be stackable, unless you have lots of shelving.

ToffeeWhirl · 08/01/2012 16:35

That's a fantastic idea, Chitchat. I have scribbled on boxes before now, but you are still left with having to sort through 20 boxes to find which one contains what you want. I think I will have a bash at that myself sometime. I might tackle our bedroom tomorrow and could start by labelling the clutter in there (might even venture under the bed...).

We are back from our trip to the museum. Not exactly a riproaring success because DS1 and his friend were in the "Oh, this is sooooo booooring" pre-teenage mode, which, unfortunately, rubbed off on DS2 (6). They ended up spending more time playing hide and seek than looking at the exhibits. And I did notice one of the attendants looking a bit sniffily at them when they were handling goods in the shop and I was telling them not to touch. I can't say I found it a very relaxing experience as I spent most of my time reminding them to be quiet and stop running around. However, the museum (Hove) was brilliant (and free) - there's a fab robot exhibition and a room upstairs full of old toys. I thought it was really thoughtfully presented and with lots for children to do. DH and I might sneak back there on our own when they are at school one day so that we can have a proper look round.

Cooking a roast chicken for dinner and hoping for a relaxing family meal. Just about to tackle the kitchen. It looks such a mess since I've been off duty Sad.

Grin at your DH escaping to the art gallery, Swan.

Flying - sorry your DH is poorly. I think we probably all agree with you about Flylady's language and attitudes, but her systems work, so we try to overlook all that.

Kitchen doesn't seem to have cleaned itself or the chicken put itself in the oven whilst I was typing, so I need to make a start now . It was nice to have a bit of time off, though.

notveryinventive · 08/01/2012 16:46

Thank you for explaining the monster thread, should I have gone there then? Oh well Im here now so you'll have to put up with me.

Anyway today's list

  • wipe down kids table twice done once
  • wipe down kitchen sides and sink
  • Wipe Bathroom done
  • Ironing done
  • go to visit families (ie MIL and my parents) done
  • wash and dry towels done

Regarding the control journal, Ive still got mine from before and I had a list of rooms and areas that needed decluttering and I managed to strike some out so Im very pleased with that. Didnt realised so much had been done. Grin

Anyway back to more tomorrow

  • wipe down kids table twice
  • wipe down kitchen sides and sink
  • Wipe Bathroom
  • Get a few bits and pieces from the shop
  • think of what else needs doing.

BBL to finish off tomorrow's list.

Lifebeginsatforty · 08/01/2012 16:51

Apologies for going AWOL. Haven't had time to read through since Friday, but will do so later (hopefully). We had our Family Fun Day today and went to Whipsnade, which was brilliant, but fresh air and car journeys always exhaust me so now very much in CBA mode. Was great to get out just the four of us though; I think the Flylady has a point about making it a regular feature to do something fun every weekend. Our weekends quite often get frittered away with taking it in turns to entertain the DC whilst the other half "gets on with something".

Saturday was my lie in day so never actually got round to writing the giant weekend to do list that I usually do. So although I can't list everything I did, and probably didn't do half of what I should have done, I ended the day on a postive note. I can now see the bathroom floor! I should point out that our "main" bathroom is only used by visitors as it has no bath (there's one in our ensuite), but bizarrely there is ample space for a bath which has been turned into shelving. Hence, between visitors, the bathroom becomes a dumping ground. I can't claim to have decluttered and sorted everything, but I now have a dedicated "craft" shelf for the DC stuff, and it looks neat and tidy, so it no longer makes me want to shut the door and run. The only catch is the (fake) Christmas tree still fully decorated sitting on the toilet Blush. I hate taking down and putting away decorations.

Sorry no personals, except that you and your family have my full sympathy SC.

ToffeeWhirl · 08/01/2012 16:57

notveryinventive - you are very welcome here Smile.

Lifebeginsatforty - welcome back. Glad you had a nice Family Fun Day. We do the sharing childcare thing and it's a shame not to do things together. I am enjoying your image of a decorated Christmas tree sitting on your toilet.

Have put the chicken in the oven. Have a terrible yearning to sit on MN rather than tackle the kitchen, so I think I'm going to have to turn off the computer. I'll try and pop back later.

BlueEyeshadow · 08/01/2012 18:50

Evening all!

Very busy day today - ta da!
Up with boys
Unloaded DW
Washing done and in dryer
Made bread
Started dinner
Church
Cleaned boys' shoes
Put clean clothes away
Sorted outgrown clothes
Hoovered car while DH adjusted straps on DS2's seats
Called my mum
Cooked roast dinner
Tidied toys away
Boys in bath...

I hope your dinner was more relaxing than ours, Toffee ... Boys were very noisy and not eating, and I managed to set fire to the string and explode the gravy... Shock

Sounds like a great idea ChitChat - my labelling is far less systematic!

Glad you had a good day out Lifebegins .

coostoonettle · 08/01/2012 18:54

Hope you all ok. I promise to catch up properly tomorrow.

Dd been screaming all day. Feeling like worst mum in world need parenting skills lessons! I'm shot and going to slob with dancing on ice.

droitwichmummy · 08/01/2012 19:23

I'm still here! Just had a low couple of days but will be back on track tomorrow.

So sorry to hear about your mum SC. Take care of yourself and look forward to seeing you soon.

To get back in FLYing mode I have a list for this evening:

set Skybox for ANTM tomorrow

See you tomorrow

Lifebeginsatforty · 08/01/2012 19:34

Nettle I felt like that before we went out this morning. DD had tantrum, hitting, headbutting, kicking, etc.
I hope things go better for you with DC tomorrow, and that you manage to relax tonight.
