Swan - you don't actually need much iodine in your diet usually, but one of the ways of getting it is apparently iodised salt. I searched high and low (Sainsburies, Tesco and Asda don't stock it) and finally found some in Lidl. My FIL gave me lecture and verse on the benefits of it and even brought some over from Australia when I had difficulty finding it!!!

After the chimney sweep came over yesterday and gave me the depressing news that ?no, we couldn?t have a fire in the fire place until we lined the bricks? I collapsed into a bit of a heap with a headache and feeling achey all over. Couldn?t go back to bed because DS2 is with me (only 2 years old) so pretty much mooched through the rest of the afternoon, researching wood burning stoves and loitering on Mumsnet. (Can't see the point in spending money lining the bricks when we eventually want to get a woodburner anyway!)

Managed to be in bed by 10.30, wasn?t asleep until 12 though Hmm. VERY annoying.

Do feel a better today, but as a result had a huge amount I wanted to do, but only got the following done:
Ta da list
Breakfast with DC
School drop off
Empty dishwasher x2
Declutter shoes and bags from entrance/hallway
Sweep and Mop Entrance/Hallway
Drop off drycleaning
Pick up pictures from framers
Pick up calendar (on a list for the 3rd time but getting V urgent due to DH?s travel!!)
Fill in calendar with DH?s travel dates
Sort laundry into colours
2x loads of general wash
Strip bedding from main bed
Wash & Dry bedding
Remake main bed (All the other bedding in storage!!!)
Toys away neatly in lounge 1/2 done
School pick up
Be in for Wood Stove installer to measure & quote
Cook dinner
Clean stovetop
Shine Sink

Off to bed now, before 11.30. Not TOOO bad (for me anyway!!)

CheerfulYank · 06/01/2012 06:25

So I have laid out clothes for DS and me, and plugged away on my decluttering. I am being quite ruthless, for me. :) I just got a scarf from my ILs for Christmas and I don't like it. Well, I like it, objectively, but know I'll never wear it so I put it in the donate box. Normally I'd keep it around for awhile, all the time knowing it would never be worn.

It's hard to keep going because it's gotten so much worse as I'm pulling everything out to sort it. My ADD is going haywire and I'm so visually overstimulated it almost hurts. But I keep thinking how good it's going to feel when I'm done, and how disappointed I'll feel if I have to report back to y'all that I've given up. So I keep just picking up one thing after another. (I'm so melodramatic, aren't I...I act like I'm climbing Everest or something :o)

On the upside I found these lovely toile chair covers my mother gave me a long time ago...I washed them and put them on my dining room chairs and they look great. Now I just have to finish uncovering the dining room table so we can actually use them... Wink

Going to shower, pack DS' bag for tomorrow and head to bed. Night!

IceColdBitchy · 06/01/2012 07:56

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/01/2012 08:59

Morning all,

Cheerful well done on being ruthless with the scarf, I have only just donated the one MIL gave me last year and which has never been worn.

Chitchat shame about the chimney. When we moved in here there was an open hearth, we had it swept and tried using it but it smoked really badly, so the next year we got a woodburner which is fabulous, so much easier to use.

I spent an hour last night plugging my routines into the Home Routines app, which I downloaded about a year ago and never really got round to using, so I'm going to see how I get on with that.

Today's list

Hoover whole house
Put away all the. new DVDs etc now I can get to the shelves which the Christmas tree was in front of.
Run
Pop into DH's work with some stuff (hour round trip)
Hear reading in DS's class
Tackle overflowing charity shop box in cupboard under stairs
Put clean sheets on spare bed

swanrevelry · 06/01/2012 09:37

Cheerful I find I get completely distracted too, my mind starts racing when I sort things. I need chair covers, ours are so manky [catfleay] in the kitchen and a depressing olive colour, but I know if I open the haberdashery drawer/remmant section of my brain I will go off piste forever and fall into a ravine.

Now I'm feeling a bit odd because I did an Ancient Mariner at the school gate with someone about my mother and her troubles, and feeling I said too much and for too long...{convo about ailing mothers who want to do things their way, in general]

Today is going to be my deal with the clutter day. No distractions. Kitchen looks respectable, as does hall, so will move upstairs. Also need to find dd's violin Grade 2 book in a sea of sheet music as to my shame I couldn't even find it to persuade her to practice.

swanthingafteranother · 06/01/2012 09:50

Chitchat we have a fireplace that draws but fills dd's bedroom with smoke Shock (it's above) We have another fireplace too which we use occasionally, open fire, but the room that really needs the fireplace (it is Freeezing) will need a chimney lining. It is one of those things that we go round in circles over, because if that room is knocked out/extended, the chimney will go, but if it is not knocked out, it needs a new chimney flue, and a different fireplace because Edwardian fireplaces don't fit woodburners [tears hair out]. Although real fires are lovely, I think woodburners really are much better, because you see the flame but you don't get ASH everywhere, and I know, having used the Edwardian fireplace for six weeks when we had no other form of heating five years ago. Also you can regulate the burning, and turn it down, revive it etc, all very satisfying. Lots in Ireland when we go on holiday.

IceColdBitchy · 06/01/2012 09:55

We have wood burner, still needed chimney lining. sorry.

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/01/2012 10:36

You do get ash everywhere when my DH empties the ash pan :(

We don't manage to regulate ours very well, I know other people who seem to get a lot better control with theirs, throw out more heat more quickly than ours and stay burning overnight (we can make ours last 2 hours tops without attention) but I still love it.

BlueEyeshadow · 06/01/2012 10:40

Well the insulation guy just came and said the other chap was talking rubbish and it doesn't need doing. Bit Angry at waste of time but I suppose on the plus side, at least it made us tackle the loft...

IceColdBitchy · 06/01/2012 11:05

Take down front window christmas decorations
Take down cards and card holders
load of washing on
sort ironing out ready for ironing

swanthingafteranother · 06/01/2012 11:16

aah Whoknows you need a Jotul! My mum had one which you put a log tree in at the beginning of the day, and it lasted all day; no glass door though, it was entirely functional and Scandinavian.

Flyingoutofcontrol · 06/01/2012 12:39

Right, on phone, been one of those days Hmm

Ta-da is:
DW emptied
S&S loo and ensuite
Hoover downstairs
Hoover stairs, landing and DS's room
Washing on for us
WAH job

Still to do:
Wash for DS (no point until he wakes up as I need his Grobag and sheet)
Trip to supermarket to pick up nappies (DH said we had some, and we do, but they are size 6 and just too big for DS so back again after a mammoth visit yesterday Blush )
Get out bacon for tomorrow (will do after dinner hopefully!)

I have now read Sink Reflections and the system does make more sense. I'm still going to alter my zones from hers though as her house is (obviously!) American and has the dining room as one of the first rooms you see - whereas mine would be one of the last!

Right, DS stirring - so lunch and then out!

swanthingafteranother · 06/01/2012 12:41

ChitChatInChaos · 06/01/2012 13:13

Swan - what size is the fireplace? Ours is only 40 cm wide and just over 35 cm in depth and it will fit an inset wood burner. Our installer says that because the stove I have chosen (Esse 301SE) is designed specifially to slot into existing fireplaces we don't need to line the chimney - over the phone he was adament we would until he saw the one I had chosen. Instead he will design some sort of a channel thingy (very technical term that!!! Grin) so that anything falling down from the chimney will fall into the burner rather than behind it.

Anyways..... he hasn't come back with an installation quote yet so still not absolutely sure we will go ahead with it.

Today I am making a bigger mess by pulling everything out of boxes and repacking them into boxes and filling in an index card with what is in there. Not too bothered about properly decluttering, but am finding that I can get rid of a lot anyway. Change of mindset maybe??? But without doing this I just can't get to the walls to decorate. Can't put things away in their places because they have no places and won't until we buy some cupboards (none here at the moment). Don't want to buy cupboards because it's just more things to move and damage while painting walls and floors. Vicious circle!!! Even my clothes are hanging on a temporary rail unit, DH has a 40s wardrobe which doesn't actually fit clothes in properly as it's not deep enough.

Going off now to take DS2 to foam play (gymnastics place which runs under 5 play sessions during the day), meeting a friend with her DS2 who is already at the nursery my DS2 will be starting at next week. Hopefully it will make it easier for him to settle in if he already has a friend, not to mention wear him out a bit with all the jumping around. The nursery staff might be a bit concerned about how these two play together though! They're quite alike personality wise and play incredibly roughly - wrestling each other all over the floor last time they were over here!!!!!!!

IceColdBitchy · 06/01/2012 13:37

Liner in our chimeny was to stop smoke leakage into upstairs room.

List dump:
Take down front window christmas decorations
Take down cards and card holders
2 loads of washing done
sort ironing out ready for ironing
fold clothes
air out house
Sort through 1 box from garage
take down twiggy shit and chains
take down paper chains
pack ds' stuff for weekend
sort out my training stuff for tonight
iron clothes
finish taking decorations down downstairs
trip to tesco
post thank you cards
remove old nail varnish
1st coat of new varnish on

Am struggling today. Only an hour and half til all craziness breaks out.

BlueEyeshadow · 06/01/2012 13:49

Thanks for the Brew Bitchy. Have one yourself! Brew It is indeed a pita but at least I don't have to wait in for them any more.

Have de-cluttered various baby stuffs to the pregnancy crisis centre, delivered the last of DS1's party invitations and bought prawns for tonight.

DS2 is now asleep so I ought to do something constructive, but CBA...

Envy of all this talk of real fires. We have a nice-looking fireplace, but some genius of a previous owner decided the best way to get the wire from the TV aerial to the TV was to drop it down the chimney. Hmm

ToffeeWhirl · 06/01/2012 14:14

Flying has ground to a halt in the Toffee household as I think I might have caught DS1's bug. And there I was patting myself on the back for resisting it. Just like DS1, I was oddly overwhelmed with tiredness and told DH that I would have to take a little nap at 11am. He had to wake me at 1pm to tell me he was going out. I couldn't wake up, but a phone call from someone dragged me out of bed. Feel headachy and wrong. DH asked me to continue decluttering our bedroom whilst he was out - well, bugger that. Annoying, though. I wanted to get things done.

All this talk about woodburning stoves is very interesting, as we are planning to get one this year. We have had a quote (OMG, the price! Shock) and just need to give them the go ahead. It's good to hear how much people like theirs. At the moment we have an old chimney in which we occasionally light fires. If there isn't a fire in the grate and it's windy outside, the wind blows down the chimney into our sitting room. I'm so looking forward to having a nice cosy woodburning stove there instead.

OK, am off to check out the monster thread now. It seems to be settling down a bit there (phew). Running it is a great incentive for me to keep up with my own Flying, I must say. Although when I mentioned how much better the house was looking, DH hadn't noticed Angry. Not even the shiny sink!

coostoonettle · 06/01/2012 14:22

Hello everyone.

I have a beautiful wood effect gas fire that hasnt worked for years but looks pretty. Grin

Horrendous day so far. warning moan alert

Woken up by very cross dc who had been sent back to bed by an overtired (as stayed up too late playing xbox) dh who insisted it wasn't time to get up. Then got up to find dh asleep on sofa and dc watching tv no one dressed etc. Angry Angry Angry What a wonderful start to the day.

Then spent all morning at work working on rotas very frustrating. Now at home having picked up dd who is playing very happily. Crazy cat booked into vets after school pick up. So instead of tackling my unmade bed/list/moving of furtniture as planned i am now mumsnetting Grin

Breathe Grin

blue i would be fuming but yes i suppose on the plus side you have managed to clear your loft.
bitchy hope you feel better soon.

Huge waves to everyone. Must dash to get moving for school pick up/vets.

Be back later.

coostoonettle · 06/01/2012 14:37
